Description

Gorgeous modern studio in a forested setting, this is a unique space with thoughtful design. Seashore and mountain trails are right outside the door, a ten minute drive from Bellingham. Our special place has offered rejuvenation and re-connection for many; inspired numerous marriage proposals; provided retreat space; hosted honeymooners, travelers & artists; motivated adventurers to hike, bike, paddle and explore; and also offered "Il Dolce Far Niente" - The Sweetness of Doing Nothing.

The Seaside Forest Studio began as an artist's studio, every aspect custom designed. From the loft bed surrounded by windows, to the fully equipped kitchen, slate-tiled shower and red brick floors, everything was added with careful thought. This is a unique space!

The Studio is 512 square feet with an added 60 feet in the sleeping area above. There is a queen-sized bed in a hanging loft, best for those comfortable climbing a ladder up and down, to sleep surrounded by windows and trees on all sides. There is also a Euro-lounger/sofa in the main room that folds into a comfortable full size bed, with a memory foam topper. The main room has a window seat, as well as a custom reading nook with games for all ages stored below. Peter's handmade beautiful, live-edge cedar table seats four (five, if you'd like). The kitchen is fully equipped with sink, stove, oven, refrigerator, and cooking implements. The bath has a full shower, beautifully tiled. The studio has both electric heat and a wood stove. There are two entryways, with a curved wood deck at the front entrance (and a large granite boulder to sit on as well). Parking is just outside the back door.

We care about beauty, connection, real things, and the Studio reflects that; much of its features were made by us or locally sourced. You'll eat at Peter's table, hang your coat on a fir tree we found in our woods, use Aimee's homemade soap in the shower, see our art on the walls, sleep in a loft built by a dear friend, and enjoy a fire with wood from our property.

A short walk down the driveway or steep beach trail offers views of both Chuckanut and Pleasant Bays (we live on a point, so there is water on both sides). Just up a winding brick path, you'll find the hot tub (older design, very simple) behind our house, on a deck under tall fir trees with peekaboo views of the water. Our property is a haven for wildlife: the studio is surrounded by a forest that's home to many kinds of birds, including raptors, owls, and songbirds. Raccoons and deer wander through, and we're close to the seashore where seals swim, herons squawk, and crabs scuttle under eelgrass forests.

The Studio shares the woods with our home, so we're available for questions and concerns. Our home is situated on a knoll overlooking the water, while the studio is in a forest below. The two structures are separated by a driveway and woods, out of sight of each other. We do share a common driveway, our cars blocked from the Studio's view by a neatly stacked woodpile. We do drive and/or walk past the Studio when coming & going.

The Seaside Forest Studio is ideal for nature lovers, outdoor adventurers, and those who want unique accommodation in a beautiful natural setting.

Guests have access to Studio amenities, hot tub, and all the trails Chuckanut Mountain has to offer. While there is no beach access on site, there are many beautiful beaches within walking distance.

We assume guests are coming to the Studio for a get-away, so we aim for minimal interaction. The house is out of sight from the studio, and, aside from a greeting when you arrive, we tend to not see studio guests during their stay. That said, we'd be happy to connect with the interesting people that visit, as you wish!

With Chuckanut Mountain behind us and the Salish Sea in front, hikers, bikers, and kayakers will find easy access to all three activities from the studio. The Interurban Trail is just up the road. Heading south on the Interurban you'll reach the trails, lakes and seashore of 2683-acre Larrabee State Park in five minutes; walking north, you can stroll or bike five miles to town if you'd like, all on this forested trail overlooking the sea. Paddling west in a kayak you'll reach Chuckanut Island in 20 minutes. Our family have been the caretakers of this special place, owned by the Nature Conservancy, for years. The world renowned beauty of Chuckanut Drive is moments away – enjoy it by bicycle or car. Fairhaven is 10 minutes and downtown Bellingham is 20 minutes by car. The Skagit Valley is just 20 minutes south along Chuckanut Drive. Venturing east, you can reach the glorious mountains, rivers, and waterfalls of the North Cascades in just over an hour. Driving west, you can be on a ferry to the pristine San Juan islands in under an hour. If you'd like, you can touch a glacier and explore an island in the same day!

The Chuckanut area and Bellingham region are an outdoor recreation and nature lovers' paradise. We're the Northwest epicenter for sea, mountain, lake, and river activities, as well as island hopping and visiting local farms of every variety (vineyards, vegetables, fruit, meat, dairy). If you'd prefer a more urban vacation, Bellingham has great markets, diverse shopping opportunities, varied restaurants and nightlife, great local breweries, and one of the most beautiful university campuses in Washington state. We're situated equidistant to Vancouver BC and Seattle, so big city attractions are just a 90 minute drive away.

The Studio is a 10 minute drive, 35 minute bike or 1.5 hour walk from Bellingham. We provide parking (uncovered).

• NOISE - Our property is bordered by a forest to the west; woods, road and Chuckanut Bay to the north; Pleasant Bay to the south; and the Burlington Northern railway very nearby to the east, just beyond and below the Studio and driveway. Trains pass by frequently and the freight engines' rumble can be noisy (though they thankfully seldom blow their whistles here). There is occasional work on the tracks below the studio, about 4-5 days/year at entirely unpredictable times. Some guests love the trains, others find the earplugs we provide helpful at night with the intermittent passing trains, or get accustomed to it as background noise (quite infrequently, a guest finds the passing night trains intolerably loud - it's really a subjective experience). We live in a neighborhood, so sounds of children playing and neighbors talking mingle with owls hooting, coyotes yipping in the distance, a nearby neighbor's rooster, and geese honking overhead.

• PETS - Please let us know if you're planning to bring a pet. We do charge a pet fee. Though we do accept well-behaved dogs, we prefer smaller, non-shedding breeds, as dog hair can be invasive.

• ACCESS - The ladder and hatch to the loft is for reasonably agile people - others might want to consider sleeping on the sofa bed below.

• TECHNOLOGY - Cell service is spotty at the Studio; though we have wifi, texting and phone reception is unpredictable.

• NIGHT LIGHT - Our property is dark at night, with some outdoor lighting, but not a lot. We love the darkness – better to see the stars and moonlight – and hope our guests will enjoy this respite from city lights as well.

• BEACHES - Though there is a small private beach below the Studio, it is for local community use only. Other beautiful beaches are a short walk or drive away. We've got lots of suggestions!

• MINIMUM STAY - We ask for a two night minimum stay on weekends, but are happy to accommodate one night stays during the week in the off-season.

• HOT TUB - Though the hot tub is located behind our home, Studio guests have access to it 24/7. It's just a short walk up a brick path. Note that it's an older model tub with no jets, just hot water to soak in under the cedars and firs.

• ABOUT YOU - We prefer to book with guests that offer a full profile (photo + description/introduction of themselves as part of their profile. Reviews and verifications are helpful too). Thank you for understanding!

• CARBON - We provide a plug-in for electric cars and offer a discount to anyone who arrives via bike, kayak, or on foot.

• There is one other rental on our property. Please be mindful of others should there be additional guests on site.

STORM POLICY/ROAD CONDITIONS – We do not refund due to road conditions, unexpected power outages, or storms. Gravel drives are well maintained; however, we highly recommend four wheel drive and/or chains for our steep road in the event of snow.

TRAVEL INSURANCE – Guests may purchase travel insurance. If you wish to purchase travel insurance, you may go to (URL HIDDEN) for details and to purchase.

WRITTEN EXCEPTIONS – Any exceptions to the above mentioned policies must be approved in writing in advance.

The Studio owners are not responsible for any accidents, injuries or illness that occurs while on the premises or in its facilities. Guests understand that this is a wooded property, with uneven walking surfaces. Guests climb a ladder to access the sleeping loft and enter through a hatch; this may not be possible for all, and guests assume responsibility for risks associated with using the ladder. Homeowners are not responsible for the loss of personal belongings or valuables of the guest.

By accepting this reservation, it is agreed that all guests are expressly assuming the risk of any harm arising from their use of the premises or others whom they invite to use the premise.

In securing a reservation at the Studio, it is assumed that guests assent to all terms of this rental agreement.

Thank you!

Aimee And Peter

We feel so fortunate to live in beautiful Bellingham, on a special piece of land purchased by Peter's forward-thinking parents in 1964. Peter builds community by working locally with historic buildings, while Aimee is founder of an environmental education and service-learning program. We value giving back to our community and sharing the gifts we’ve received, both in our work and personal lives. Our vacation rentals are an expression of that ethic, striving for authentic connection of people with place. We have a combined 52 years in this area, and know it well! Our two rentals - Pleasant Bay Lookout & Chuckanut Seaside Forest Studio - in the forest by the sea have offered rejuvenation and re-connection for many; inspired numerous marriage proposals; provided retreat space; hosted honeymooners, travelers & artists; motivated adventurers to hike, bike, paddle and explore; and also offered "Il Dolce Far Niente" - The Sweetness of Doing Nothing. Our Garden Street Studio lends itself to urban explorations on foot or bike, from breweries to beaches, farmer's markets, museums and music venues, and the beautiful Western Washington University campus. We feel grateful to be able to share the bounty of Whatcom County: proximity to the sea, nearby mountains' trails and vistas, and all that Fairhaven and Bellingham have to offer.

We are passionate about being active outdoors, healthy living, creativity, and authentic connections with others. We've greatly enjoyed the expansion of our community via our vacation rentals – sharing our special spaces with others from around the world has made the quality of our lives even better!
