Welcome to High Silly Hall - except it isn't silly and it is not a hall! An 'ancient tenement known as Silliehole' has existed on this site from the 1600s. The name is derived from the Old Norse "Seljaholh" - translating to Willow Hollow. Located in the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, our home sits in 80 acres of land with tremendous views of the South Tyne Valley. It provides a great base for exploring Cumbria, Weardale, Durham and the North East.

The House

When you arrive at our home down a short driveway, there is parking space and a covered area to store cycles or motorbikes. The driveway and house exterior has automatic sensor lighting so no problem finding your way if you arrive at night, which believe me, is pitch black when there is no moon. There is wheelchair/buggy access to the main entrance which takes you into the lobby/boot room. Here you will find access to:
- The garage which contains washer and tumble dryer and airers to hang wet outdoor clothing.
- Ground floor shower room and toilet. Ideal for rinsing off muddy people and pets, or for use if guests have difficulty using the stairs.

Rest of the ground floor

Through the lobby you will find a large open plan area consisting of a fully equipped kitchen, living and dining area. When you enter, we will let the incredible views speak for themselves. The high spec kitchen includes 2 full size ovens, induction hob, dishwasher, microwave, freezer and a large cabinet fridge. Various electric appliances (blenders etc.) are also available. Guests are welcome to use the recipe books stored in the large Victorian cabinet and a range of herbs, spices and condiments are also available for use. There is a blue-tooth enabled Pure Evoke Radio for streaming music, podcasts etc.
The living area has plenty of comfortable seating, TV, X Box 360 and a stone surrounded wood burning stove to warm up the chilly nights. A large dog bed is available for the dog in your life to relax too.
Through a door to the left, there is access to a large study, with an extensive library of books. Feel free to browse if you fancy abandoning the electronics and going old-school. The study also houses two single sofa beds - available at no extra charge.
The living/dining area extends out to a large conservatory with sofa and chairs, although you will have to share the space with a large tree fern and a number of plants! The roof apertures in the conservatory have thermostatically controlled openers which activate once a certain temperature is reached. The conservatory opens out to a covered glass area with gas barbecue, table and outdoor seating. There is also outdoor lighting so you can sit out after dark.
Exit the glass double doors into the hall to the stairs and front door porch. This takes you to the garden and a gate out into the fields - great for walking the dog, and for kids and adults alike to explore.

First floor

The hall has an antique writing desk if you need a workspace

The two larger bedrooms have king size beds (plus 1 single in bedroom 2) and en-suite showers. The third bedroom has 2 bunks and a truckle bed. The bunks are built for adults and tested to a weight of 108 kg (17 stone). The truckle bed can be easily moved to another room to reconfigure sleeping arrangements. This room is right next door to the family bathroom - which must have some of the most amazing views you can have sitting on the loo! It also includes shower, bidet and bath.

Each room has thermostatically controlled underfloor heating via a biomass boiler and hot water is supplemented by solar panels on the roof.

Accès des voyageurs
Guests have access to all of the areas of the house, garden and surrounding fields and we want you to be able to explore and enjoy the wildlife. However please note that dogs must be kept on the lead when sheep are in the fields. In addition, some fields may be out of bounds to avoid disturbing rare ground nesting birds in the spring. See the UK Country Code for guidance on making minimal impact on our beautiful environment.

Autres remarques
2 travel cots, highchairs and changing mat are available for babies
Stair gates and fireguard available
Large dog bed and two medium dog bowls available
We have a fledgling orchard (quite possibly the highest in England) and whilst the fruit trees are still quite immature, we have rhubarb, gooseberries, raspberries and currants growing. We often make home made jam and ice-cream, so if you are interested in purchasing some during your stay - please let us know.

30 acres of our land is planted with young British native deciduous trees extending the wildlife corridor up from the South Tyne and Pennine Way. We have found a little natural pool in the river, which Daisy our dog loves to swim in on a hot day and we would be happy to give you directions if you, the dog or the kids would like to cool off. When walking round the fields, once you get your eye in, it is easy to spot the remains of the once thriving lead mining industry, with evidence of small settlements and primitive bell pits dug to extract the lead.
We are a short walk from Alston Moor Golf Course, the highest golf course in England.
The market town of Alston (highest market town in England - and yes there is a bit of a theme emerging!) is just 2 miles away for stocking up on groceries etc. There is a bakery, coffee shops and places to eat. Two lovely gift shops and a pottery shop. You must also try Alston Whole Foods, which in addition to selling absolutely delicious local cheeses, stocks a wide range of exotic food and drink.
At the foot of Alston, you can find the South Tynedale Railway - the North of Englands highest narrow gauge railway and a popular heritage attraction.

Colette and Edward moved to High Silly Hall a few years ago and what was a renovation project rapidly became a rebuild using the original stone and building materials to recreate a traditional stone Cumbrian farmhouse. Its been a labour of love sweat and tears! At the time of posting, we are getting ready for hosting in the summer, so will be adding more photographs as we complete the preparation. Edward is a former scientist turned builder and when he is not completing the renovation, he is kept pretty busy looking after our tree planting and our baby orchard. Colette works in the public sector as a consultant with projects that differ week to week. Colette loves cooking and we both love to entertain and are looking forward to sharing our home and this beautiful place with our guests.

As hosts, we have separate accommodation in the basement which has a locked communicating door in the hall (and a separate exit). We will be available to show you around the house on arrival and answer any questions you might have. We may need to have occasional access to water plants etc., but would do this with your permission and at your convenience - ideally when you are out and about. And of course, we are always available if you have any questions or require information.
