This young guest was manipulative and seemed emotionally unstable. She threatened to write me a bad review if I did not buy her a Memory Foam mattress topper and 2 new pillows. Worrying about what she might do, I agreed to comply although my mattress has been used summers-only for 8 years and 2 of my 5 pillows were replaced new this spring.
When this guest finally left my cottage in disarray and littered with trash, food, wine bottles and a pile of dirty laundry in the floor, my housekeeper charged me extra for the 3.5 hours she needed to clean. I passed this expense along to the guest by simply reducing the amount that I reimbursed her for her purchases.
Her attack against my home, my taste and my character must be addressed, but I will be brief.
The Maine cottage I offer for rental is my idyllic summer home, built new in 2007-8 and offered for renting (May to July) since 2010. All of the furniture and appliances were new or have been updated since 2008. Some of my decor is antiques and travel souvenirs. There is some original art displayed-- mine and others'.
I do not require spotless cleaning from a guest-- only that they leave my place tidy "as found" and start a wash for their sheets and towels.
This guest makes it sound like duct tape is holding my bed together. No. A small strip was used to repair a corner tear I made when I first installed the vinyl mattress cover. When this guest tore my bed apart looking for the mattress manufacturer's tag, she tore a big hole-- too big to repair, in the cover.
My futon sofa is not broken.
I did not withhold any of this renter's security deposit. She spent $130 on her mattress topper and two pillows and, after subtracting my expenses for damages and extra cleaning, I sent her $40 in addition to refunding her entire security deposit.
