This newly renovated, elegant and unique first-floor apartment is situated in Seco Marina, Castello: a characteristic district of Venice where washing is hung in the street and Venetian is spoken more than Italian. A stone’s throw from the Giardini and a short walk to the Arsenale, Scala Mata is the ideal apartment for visitors to the Venice Biennale. With 2 bedrooms, a living area, dining room, separate kitchen and bathroom, the apartment has a very 'homely' feel.
Scala Mata means ‘mad staircase’ in Venetian and visitors to the apartment will easily see why: the winding staircase connects the entrance to the main living spaces on the first floor, which are built around the stairwell. The mad staircase then continues to the third floor attic space. The second floor remains a mystery!
Traditional, curated single pieces of décor such as: marble tables, 17th Century Venetian doors and Murano glass lights, contrast with the contemporary kitchen, bathroom and modern appliances. This is Venice recomposed: history recalled within a contemporary context.
Naturally lit interiors are hard to come by in Venice, but Scala Mata boasts nine windows on three sides of the apartment. It’s perfect at all times of day and, due to the attention given to the lamps and lighting within, you can set whatever mood suits you in the evenings too.
The flat is ideal for families, friends and couples visiting Venice, or for longer stays by researchers, academics and professionals. The space is designed to be flexible and can accommodate many different needs. Children are welcome, dogs are allowed, but the flat is definitely no smoking / no candles.
Accès des voyageurs
Our guests will be able to access all parts of the space. The apartment has its own, dedicated front door and there is no communal staircase. The front door opens with both keys and with a code and a secondary internal door has a security bar which can be used at night if required. For families with small toddlers, we'll fix a safety gate to the top of the stairs before your arrival.
There are some limitations: anybody that faces real difficulty with stairs or has other mobility issues would be better looking at our other property Casa Alma, which has better access and all the facilities on the ground floor. Scala Mata has no outside terrace, but with the green area of the Giardini so close, there are lots of beautiful places to sit and while away a couple of hours nearby.
Échanges avec les voyageurs
As with Casa Alma, this is a family run accommodation. If we are not available in person, then our parents, Claudio and Karin will normally be available to greet hosts and run through the check-in. Most guests get along just fine, but if there are problems then one of the family is a phone call away. We send guests a pdf pack one week before their arrival with directions, boat timetables, recommended restaurants etc.
- Quiet Hours after 11pm
- For a personal check-in and greeting between 8pm-12pm there is an extra charge of €40
- There is a key code option for late arrivals, with a check-in the following morning
- No candles are allowed - there's a lot of wood!

We wish you a happy, relaxed and productive stay at Casa Alma and Scala Mata. I teach Italian and Spanish in the UK and I'm a translator. My husband Alan is a visual artist, arts manager, university lecturer and a Brit!. We met in Kerala, India and we've travelled a lot for work; living in Amsterdam, Cairo, Cardiff and a heap of other places. Now we live and work in Venice and in Dorset, England. We have two children, Alvise and Molly and a sprawling, multi-lingual, extended family living near Venice, so if we can't meet you personally, we'll try to make sure one of the tribe will! Our motto? Seize the day.
