À propos de ce logement

Be inspired and enjoy modern living in an authentic 1930s-built 2-storey townhouse on one of most well-preserved row along Bangkok Lane just behind Wat Chaiyamagkalaram & the majestic Burmese Temple grounds.

We often host artists, musicians & anthropologists seeking a "real" Penang experience of living in a heritage house. Nearby there's Pulau Tikus Market with yum local breakfast & malls to give you a cool respite from the heat. Pulau Tikus is one of Penang's best kept secrets!

Le logement

** At first glance
Le CoQ Home Space has welcomed dozens of emerging musicians, artistes & friends! It's a comfortable cottage for friends to hang out, chill and just seep in 'real' Penang. Centrally located in-between George Town and Batu Ferringhi beach at Pulau Tikus, it's just a 10-minute walk from Gurney Drive.

** What to expect?
The house is furnished simply to retain the original feel of the quaint 1930s-built cottage. You can even host a music gig / mini art exhibition! It sleeps up to 3 adults comfortably on real beds.

** ACCOMMODATION (upstairs)
There are 2 rooms upstairs and a spare day bed downstairs.

ROOM 1: The MASTER LOFT is air-conditioned with one king-sized real bed (sleeps 2), has a writing table & stool. There's a private balcony with 2 chairs so you can enjoy lazy mornings and watch the world go by. Bamboo blinds keep it shady for hot tropical afternoons.

ROOM 2: Table-fan in the second open-concept room with one single bed (sleeps 1) opens up to a private balcony that amazes with stunning views of the temple steeple. One spare mattress (sleeps 1) is available free of charge in case you have an extra friend to accommodate. Note: this room has no walls nor doors.

DAY BED DOWNSTAIRS: Located in the living room, the day bed (sleeps 1) with an air conditioning unit.

** AMENITIES (downstairs)
Downstairs, there is one shower and one W.C. toilet. We've fitted in a brand new Johnson Suisse seated flush toilet - a tiny peak-hole allows you sneak peak to the sky while on the throne :P The bathroom is not renovated so it's still dated with faded blue tiles, but it's clean and fitted with a brand new Alpha water heater with jet shower. We have a washing machine too!

We have a mini kitchen equipped with a fridge, utensils, kettle, gas stove, microwave oven. However, we hardly cook and usually eat out as Penang food is tasty and inexpensive!

We also have a brand new 42" TV, DVD player and lots of DVDs.

Please note that we offer FREE INTERNET for guests (4G Internet by YES.my with up to 1Gb data per day during your stay. Additional Wi-Fi is chargeable at RM32 (A$10) per lot of 4Gb if you watch movies). Closest free WiFi is at Starbucks at Gurney Plaza or Gurney Paragon malls & Mr. Pot cafe (open 24-hrs) along Gurney Drive.

** THE ART SPACE (downstairs)
The retro-fit living room is the 'unofficial' arts space, where we'll occasionally invite local artists to jam and gig at our open mic sessions. We also have housed many local musicians in-residence at 15 Bangkok Lane as emerging singer songwriters and poets are always welcome!

** SOME BACKGROUND
A labour of love, a work-in-progress... this double-storey cottage is one of 41 built in the late 1930s by philanthropist Cheah Leong Keah and still retains much of its original form & structure. You could say the architect of the time successfully infused Asian and Western design in the houses. Cheah built the homes and laid the trust to keep the families together and until today, uncles and cousins live just across the road. If the whitewashed walls could talk, you'd be host to a thousand tales! Born in Swatow, China, Cheah began by making and repairing horse carriages, and later evolved into one of the pioneers of the motor industry.

Today, the eclectic Bangkok Lane community includes Corner coffee shops, Raingarden beer garden cafe, Lavanna Massage, a Hair & Nail Salon, Casa de Calda cafe, D'Borse Handbags, The Palanquinn & Dwell - a boutique heritage hotel, fashion designer Richard Rivalee Collections, a florist and many more. There's also the MUST-TRY famous Indian Mee Goreng, Nasi Kandar, Pasembur Rojak, Halal Hokkien Prawn Mee and Chinese Koay Teow Th'ng noodles at the end of the street!

** LOCATION
The townhouse is snuggled right in the heart of suburb called 'Pulau Tikus'. Behind it, is the famed Wat Chaiyamangkalaram (reclining Buddha) Thai and Burmese temples. Just 100m away is the Pulau Tikus wet market where locals go to market, and surrounding the area are coffee shops serving up hot food from as early as 7am. Be sure to try Koay Teow th'ng (soup or dry), Koay kak, Hokkien prawn mee polished off with 'Tau Hua' soya bean custard from the market food court for breakfast. Have it with black sugar. Delicious!

A 15-minute stroll away is Gurney Drive (where Grandpa used to go swim and Grandma swore sightings of dolphins in the 1960s) and the shopping mall paradise at Gurney Plaza. You'll likely stumble onto my favourite Crepe Cottage on 77D Gurney Drive. Don't miss their scrumptious sweet and savoury pancakes/crepes especially the 'Penang Special', Hot Apple or Nutella Banana. They open from 6pm-12am daily (closed Tuesdays).

*** WHO LIVES HERE?
I do. I shuttle between Kuala Lumpur and Penang for work and spend a weekend every month in the house. When I'm in town, I will take Room 2 and would love to show you around. If I'm not around, be my guest and make yourself at home! You'll have the entire house to yourself.0

*** WHY LE COQ?
The home space is called Le CoQ, inspired by Mum who was born in the Year of the Rooster. The Rooster wakes up very early and announces the dawn of a new day/the dispersing of darkness.

*** We dedicate a month in a year to host musicians and artists. So your stay supports our arts and music program and the upkeep of the home space. Looking forward to welcoming you to 15 Bangkok Lane :)

Accès des voyageurs

The whole entire house, at your privacy. No car park lot available next to house, because we rent the space out and donate 50% of the funds to support the disadvantaged and homeless. There's plenty of street parking, and you'll need to purchase a parking coupon.

Autres remarques

In case of emergency, the hotline is 999. There's the Pulau Tikus police station on Burmah Road 5 minutes away, and also Adventist Hospital.

The kitchen back door facing driveway has a lock in door, but in case of emergency, you can just unlatch it from the top and PUSH door open without a key.

Always be safe when crossing the roads. Although Bangkok Lane is a one-way street, many errant motorcyclists drive thru the wrong way. So watch out and Always Be Careful

It was a good stay at Jasmine's. The estate and interiors of the unit have a rich cultural vibe which was pretty interesting. Location was a plus too - a quick car ride to Gurney and Georgetown. Pictures of the unit were accurate. Amenities were all provided. Only shortfall was that the shower and toilet were kind of old but it was pre-mentioned in the description so we already knew and accepted that before booking. Overall, it was really value for money and I would come back again if I visit Penang :)

The house is amazing, full of character and charm in a central but local part of town nestled behind two must see Buddhist temples. From the outset Jasmine made our stay the best it could possibly be and we could not have found a more helpful and accommodating host. Highly, highly recommended on all counts. Do yourself a favour and stay at Jasmine's when you are in Penang! We'll def be coming back.

Jasmine's house is located in the northern George Town, 20 or 25-min walking distance to most sightseeing spots in the town and very close to the markets and cafes. The house is perfectly clean and comfortable. Jasmine was not in Penang when we arrived there but the checkin process was smooth with her timely messages. She also recommended many places to visit and local food to try. The welcoming hostess and her lovely house made our Penang journey complete and wonderful. Highly recommend to all the people exploring Penang!

Jasmine apartment is very lovely and accessible. The apartment is very clean and beautifully decorated. Though you can see cemetery from the balcony, It is within walking distance to two shopping centers, and gurney food court. Gave a five star review, and love to come back soon.

Hello, 婷 李. I'm sorry to read this, that you found that our house was too far from downtown. It's only 10-mins from Georgetown by cab and the location is clearly stated in the map. Unless you were caught in traffic, or coming from the airport? Yes, our house is right by the road called Bangkok Lane. But not on the main road. It would be ideal to have the roads closed. Perhaps one day... Sadly, we hope something can be done about creating civic awareness among motorcyclists so they don't rev up their engines nor travel up the wrong way. In Malaysia, that seems the case for many neighbourhoods. We can only keep educating motorists to be considerate. Thanks for your comments though!

Authentic shop-house built in 1930th located about 4 km north of Georgetown. Communication with Jasmine was excellent. If you are looking for special experience, this is a great spot, right next to Buddhist temple.

Living in a vintage shophouse in the convenient residencial neighborhood is quite an unprecedented experience. Jasmine helped a lot. The only problem is the noise made by roaring motorcycles passing by.

Hi! I'm 4th generation Malaysian Chinese, and an avid traveller but there's really nothing like a home built from the heart. Penang is the town, in which I was born, and the city in which my Mum grew up in the 1950s/60s. I've lived in Sydney for a decade and now shuttle between Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Sydney.

A UNESCO status city, Penang has a unique heritage as the one of the most important melting pots resulting from the spice trade during the turn of the century. I must share, that most of the time, I'm travelling for work, so I'm afraid I may not be at the house to host you. This means, you'll have complete privacy.

Some tips for the foodies: on Bangkok Lane in Penang, you must start with the Pork Satay cart for breakfast, lunch at the famous Mee Goreng & Mee Rebus, followed by the Asam Laksa opposite the Pulau Tikus Police Station - just a few delicious must-haves! To fend off the heat, rock up to the drinks stall under the tree along Burma Road and ask for an ICE BALL. Cools you off! So enjoy the Penang experience like a true Penangite!

On my wishlist: San Francisco, New Orleans, Phoenix, New York, Prague, Paris, Santiago, San Juan, Sao Paolo, Rio de Janeiro. And a place to chill and relax is Perhentian Islands in Malaysia! Finally, thanks to a friend Nell who introduced me to Airbnb!! I love the service and I look forward to travelling the world with you. Kudos, guys!

Mum and I especially welcome artists and musicians at 15 Bangkok Lane - as we are inspired by artist-in-residence programs and hope to one day run one. It'll be an unforgettable quaint experience - lived like a true Penangite! Who knows what you could create :)
