My house is lovely and I will provide you with a clean, eco-friendly, safe place to stay while you are visiting Oakland. I'm open to everyone; safe space.
Send an inquiry rather than a booking request, so my calendar isn't blocked. Trust me on this, friendly inquiries get way more bookings than outright requests. Write as if you are asking to stay in someone's home rather than a hotel. I only host guests who demonstrate good communication skills.
This is a spacious, sunny, single-family, two-bedroom, one bath, home in North Oakland right by Berkeley, which means it is about equidistant from downtown Berkeley, Rockridge, Temescal, and Emeryville (I walk to these places all the time), with easy public transportation access to downtown Oakland and to San Francisco. It is a 1923 split-level California Bungalow, but is not drafty and damp like so many of them.
Your private bedroom has a queen size bed, closet with a dresser, desk and chair, and night stand.
I have a greywater system from the shower and laundry and rainwater catchment for my vegetable and fruit tree garden (you won't notice any of these things unless you are looking for them). I compost and recycle and have very energy efficient appliances. It is all very seamless and you won't even notice.

You have access to the whole house, including a very comfy couch to watch your netflix shows (you can use my account) on a flat-screen T.V. I expect you to use my kitchen as much as you would like (I am vegetarian but do not maintain a strictly vegetarian kitchen; in other words, cook what you would like). I don't have a microwave.
The bird-filled backyard features a fire-pit - I can make a backyard campfire happen upon prior arrangement - and I have a bbq grill and a outdoor propane grill you can use. These items are not generally set-up during the winter.

I am at work all day but often home on the evening and weekends, and always available to help you with local advice and decision making - I've been here for 25 years! Weekends especially I am often home trying to catch-up on garden work.
The cat is one of the softest you will meet and is very friendly if he thinks there might be a lap involved. He doesn't go in the guest bedroom. He is outdoors a most of the time so I don't think the house is very allergenic.
I am a good communicator and I expect all my guests to be as well.
I only accept requests from those who have provided verification, a photo, and tell me why they are visiting. No third-party reservations or from anyone who hasn't demonstrated good communication skills. Priority goes to people on a mission: visiting the East Bay, here for work, school, activism, or love, are on a bike tour, or have some compelling/unusual story.
I'm flexible. Want to have friends over? Need a longer stay? Need a place to leave some stuff while you go on an out-of-town excursion? Let's just communicate with each other and work it out.
I almost never book more than a couple weeks with someone I haven't met yet, but you are welcome to ask; if we agree to a month-long stay, we can negotiate a price.
Please, no cigarette smokers, cat haters, or haters in general.
Write a friendly introductory message.
Try to be environmentally conscious (non-pedantic advice provided as needed).
If I'm drinking, you're drinking. Kidding!
(But seriously, this is not a party house, by either host or guests. Thanks.)

I work at a public natural resource agency that is a water/wastewater utility. I've been an analyst for several of our high-profile programs. I also am involved in environmental projects around town.
I put effort into making my house nice and eco-friendly, and enjoy puttering around in my garden.
