Blairgowrie and Rattray, Écosse, Royaume-Uni

Rosemount is a quiet residential area 2 miles from Blairgowrie town centre.

Blairgowrie is a fantastic location in its own right and also as a base from which to explore much of what Scotland has to offer. We will describe some of what there is within easy reach.
Cities and Travel
We are within easy reach of all of Scotland’s cities which offer excellent cultural, leisure and retail facilities and a whole lot more
• Perth – 16 miles from Perth which has excellent direct rail links to all Scottish cities and some direct train services to London Kings Cross
• Dundee – 20 miles from Dundee, on the East Coast Main railway line that runs from Aberdeen to London Kings Cross
• Edinburgh - 60 miles from Edinburgh City Centre and 57 miles from Edinburgh Airport – approximately a drive of 1 hour 15 minutes to each
• Glasgow – 73 miles from Glasgow City Centre and 81 miles from Glasgow Airport – around 1 hour 30 minutes by car
• Aberdeen – 73 miles to Aberdeen by car
Beautiful Perthshire
Sir Walter Scott described Perthshire as “The fairest portion of the northern kingdom.”
It is a region of considerable variety and contrasts, spanning areas of the Highlands to the west and north, and the verdant agricultural land renowned for soft fruit production to the south and east.
Historic Scotland
• Dunkeld (11 miles) – a beautiful small town on the banks of the Tay with its Cathedral, the earliest part of which dates back to the late 1200s, and a host of houses of historic interest including one visited by Robert Burns. Across the river, over the bridge built by Thomas Telford opened in 1809, one can find the Birnam Oak, over 500 years old and a survivor of the wood described by Shakespeare in Macbeth.
• Scone Palace (15 miles) – now one of Scotland’s most important stately homes with an ancient history as the place of the Scottish Kings and a seat of parliaments. Now often also used as a venue for concerts, fairs and other gatherings.
• Glamis Castle (15 miles) – with a history dating back to 1372, the setting for Macbeth, the childhood home of Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother and the home of the Earl and Countess of Strathmore, Glamis provides a fascinating day out
• Kirriemuir – J.M. Barrie’s childhood home (15 miles) – now a museum and recreation of the home as it would have looked during J.M. Barrie’s childhood. Kirriemuir itself is a charming little market town worth spending time in.
• Arbroath Abbey (32 miles) – founded in 1178 and most famous for the 1320 Declaration of Scottish Independence.
• Balmoral Castle (42 miles) – is the Scottish home of the Royal Family where the family spend much of the Summer. Outside of those times parts of the grounds, garden and exhibitions are open to the public.
Nature, Wildlife and Captive Animals
The Old Coach House is home, and a stopping off point, to a large number and variety of birds, frogs, hedgehogs and the odd red squirrel! Nearby walks will often bring sightings woodpeckers, jays, various raptors, and of local fallow deer. Not much further afield you will find:
Rivers including the Ericht, Isla and Tay all within a few miles of the Old Coach House and popular for casual strolls, longer walks and fishing for salmon and trout (permits can be purchased locally).
Loch of the Lowes (9 miles) – A Scottish Wildlife Trust Centre which is the home of nesting ospreys, red squirrels, otters and beavers.
Loch Tay Safaris (32 miles) - https://www.lochtaysafaris.net/
Highland Safaris (and Red Deer Centre) (31 miles) - https://www.highlandsafaris.net/
Coastal Locations
We are around 30 miles (some locations a little nearer, some a little further) from the east coast including the towns of Arbroath and Montrose, and some lovely beaches including Lunan Bay (https://www.visitscotland.com/info/towns-villages/lunan-bay-p315721).
We are also 30 miles from the gorgeous historic town of St Andrews, and 40 miles from the charming East Neuk of Fife towns and villages including Anstruther, Crail, Pittenweem, St Monan’s, Elie and Earlsferry.
Glens, Mountains and Lochs
Blairgowrie sits on the Highland Boundary fault, the geographical dividing line between the highlands and lowlands. The River Ericht, a tributary of the Tay, runs through the town. Heading north from Blairgowrie on the A93 one soon reaches the Grampians which contain some of the highest peaks in Scotland. Glenshee ski centre, the highest point of any A road in the UK (the Cairnwell Pass), and in the midst of a number of Munros, is 25 miles from the Old Coach House.
40 miles to the south west will see you at Loch Earn, a beautiful inland loch with a number of nearby munros, and the same distance west will take you to Loch Tay, another glorious setting including the renowned Queen’s View.
We are less than 30 miles from the Angus Glens.

Outdoor Pursuits
Golf
For those intent on spoiling a good walk, The Old Coach House is a short walk from the Clubhouse of the Blairgowrie Golf Club, home of the Rosemount Course said by some commentators to be on a par with the famous Gleneagles Centenary Course.
Gleneagles itself is 31 miles away to the south west, the same distance as the Old Course at St Andrews. A couple of miles closer, off to the south east, is Carnoustie, home of the 2018 Open Championship.
There are a good many more local courses suiting all ranges of ability and budget.
Walking
Blairgowrie is an excellent base for the highly-regarded Cateran Trail walk, which begins in Blairgowrie, and there are countless options for walks be it in the hills, along riverbanks or on the coast, within easy reach.
Skiing
The Old Coach House is 25 miles from the largest ski centre in Scotland, Glenshee. There are several local options for hiring equipment for those who do not have their own.
Driving
Blairgowrie is the gateway to the Northeast 250 (https://www.northeast250.com/) route.
For those who prefer going off-road, we are only 9 miles from the Land Rover Experience Centre (http://www.scotland.landroverexperience.co.uk/).
Food and Drink
Blairgowrie is known as the home of the Scottish soft fruit industry and superb-quality berries are readily available from various outlets from May through to October.
There is also a range of good local pubs and restaurants making the most of excellent local produce. We will be pleased to provide our own recommendations upon request!
For whisky and gin lovers, there are a good many distilleries within easy reach including the smallest whisky distillery in Scotland, and several of the top rated distilleries for visitors according to Tripadvisor.
