Le logement
This idiosyncratic townhouse dates back to Velez de Benaudalla's history, and building began some 100 years ago as a farmhouse. The house had sections added constantly as the farm around it was eventually swallowed by the spreading town. It is now very central and your perfect base for experiencing life in a charismatic historical Spanish town. The beaches of the Costa Tropical are 15 minutes away, Granada and the fabulous Alhambra Palace an unhurried 45 minutes (via the Lecrin Valley) and the ski resorts and national park of the magnificent Sierra Nevada half an hour beyond Granada. Velez is 5 minutes from the A44 and national motorways, which means it is conveniently near everything. It offers excellent pavement cafes, good shops, a small market, banks, and is a nice town to explore. Alsa coach services between Motril and Granada city centres have stops on the high street an easy walk from the house.

If travelling with friends or family please note there's a separate guest room next to yours and the entire suite can be rented as a whole - contact host for a discounted price.

Many guests are writers, and the rooms have spacious desks with comfortable chairs. It is also an ideal base for those wanting to drive through to the winter ski slopes, or enjoy exploring the coastal towns year-round. If you want to visit the Alhambra Palace in Granada it is recommended you book ahead, even at quieter times of year. The Costa Tropical's winter is crisp and invigorating, and the hikers and cyclists love it. The pavement cafes are wonderful - not to mention two bakeries in easy walking distance. The Jardin Nazari, a beautifully recreated nod to the town's Moorish origins, is 5 minutes walk away. Nearly everything is - the gym, municipal swimming pools in August, high street banks shops and restaurants, and a good coach service between Motril and Granada for non-drivers.

With 320 days of sunshine a year winter days are usually sunny but the nights can get nippy, there's a radiator in the room and extra covers provided. In summer, a standing fan replaces the radiator and the old walls are so thick the house is generally cool.

Accès des voyageurs
Downstairs, there is the atrium, terrace, and at the back, a small upstairs patio. The former smokehouse at the end of the terrace is now a laundry for guest use. The host lives downstairs. Anything you need, just ask, except between noon and four pm when host is teaching English online and cannot respond.

Autres remarques
The room has tea and coffee facilities and access to the guest living-room / kitchenette with fridge, sink, etc, shared with the other guest room.

Vélez de Benaudalla, Andalousie, Espagne

Velez was built in Moorish times and has narrow twisting streets surrounded by open farms. It shares the gentle coastal climate of the Costa Tropical, and the Jardin Nazari is a beautifully restored step back into the past. Velez is a small and bustling town with crammed corner shops, mini supermarkets, bakeries and delis, 3 banks, a daily fresh fish / meat market on weekdays, plus the bread van stops at the house every morning around 10.30. Drinks at the pavement cafes have friendly prices and include the day's special tapas as standard. Menus are varied and the food is good - hence only a miniature oven in the guest suite! With so much on offer in easy walking distance, guests rarely eat in.

I'm English-speaking, with a smattering of about 5 other languages (Spanish fluency is a work in progress) and in a way I'm standing in for that handy aunt you don't have in Spain - the one in a nice non-touristy town with excellent pavement cafes, and some of the most beautiful bits of Spain just a little further afield. My guest room is your base for exploring and if you're a writer, or travelling alone, or both, you are doubly welcome. I'm a writer, most recently from Scotland but originally from South Africa, so Velez is my return to the sun, and more. I'm also still trying to bring this unique old townhouse to its full potential, and although the refurbishment has been completed the fine-tuning will continue for many years. Oh, and I'm the best kind of relative - around when you'd like directions, advice, or to talk about the adventures of the day but otherwise getting on with my own stuff.
