Unit is located within an attractive condominium complex on the island’s northwest shore called Paniolo Hale, which translates “Cowboy House” in Hawaiian. The units all have wrap-around, screened-in porches or lanais. When the French doors on the living room are open, the living space expands to include this semi-enclosed area effectively blurring the boundaries between interior and exterior space. It’s a great place to eat meals, read, overlook the ocean, or even sleep as a cool breeze blows and waves break gently in the distance.

Unit is a 5-minute walk to Kepuhi Beach (which it overlooks) and a 10-minute walk to Makehorse Beach.

Although the condominium complex dates back to 1980, the bathroom and kitchen have recently been renovated. Unit amenities include:

Washer & dryer,

Stainless steel electric stove with range,

Stainless steel refrigerator with filtered water and icemaker,

Microwave,

New dishes and glasses,

Hand-sewn quilts decorating the walls.

Please no smoking.

In order to give our housekeeper time to clean our unit, we request that you
plan to arrive no earlier than 3:00 PM on your day of arrival, and that you
depart no later than 10:00 AM on the day that you leave.

Pick your mail up from the mail slots on the office lanai. The schedule of
the lanai office is apt to change.

Our security agency requests that all guests sign in on the clipboard
outside the office lanai. They need to know who is staying in every unit at
all times. So, when it is convenient, please sign in after you arrive. And,
please remember that this is our home. We would appreciate it if you would
treat it as you would your own home.

It is the Hawaiian custom that before entering a private home you remove
your shoes or sandals. This slows down the wear of the hardwood floors and
carpets and helps keep the sand out of the house.

Hawaii is an outdoor wonderland but suntan lotion and oil will permanently
stain the furniture, please refrain from sitting on upholstered furniture in
bathing suits.

Keep in mind that you will be in the tropics with a large insect population.
And even with a very active abatement program, these insects just love to
have food left out on the counters, so we strongly suggest that you put all
food away in the refrigerator at night and empty the garbage before you go
to bed.

Please leave the Radio/CD/Tape player in the bookcase in the unit. We
definitely do not want it taken to the beach.

You will find beach towels in the bathroom, beach chairs and mats and a
picnic cooler in the utility closet. The blue ice is in the freezer.

Please note that due to the overpopulation of feral cats, the Board of
Directors requests that owners and guests refrain from feeding the cats or
else fines will be issued. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.

We stayed at Matt's place because of the amazing reviews and they were all accurate. The hale is an impressive little oasis on the isolated west end of a special island Molokai. We felt like we found an absolute treasure and it was so easy to relax at Matt's from the first day we arrived. There are great amenities that make your stay and trips to the beach (just a short walk and ocean within view from the lanai) easy like an ice machine. We enjoyed making a meal with great appliances in the kitchen for ourselves after watching the sunset over Oahu each night. It was far different than how I think most people (our friends even) experience Hawaii and especially compared our first few days at Waikiki. I think you just need to know what's type of people you are and how you like to experience new places. We would love to return and feel that is can be a place to come back to again and again to explore, relax, and rejuvenate from the daily grind. Some other highlights from our experience was listening to local music at the Coffees of Hawaii and paddling on a traditional Hawaiian outrigger with the local canoe club. We enjoyed meeting lots of very nice residents and it's pretty neat how everyone is connected via "coconut wireless."

Matt's place in the beautiful Paniolo Hale ("Cowboy House") development provided a comfortable, peaceful, and fully-equipped refuge on the stunning, wild and wooly island of Molokai. Every morning we grabbed our snorkel gear, took the 5 minute walk down a path through tree-covered canopies, past few people but an array of island wildlife including Axis deer, a variety of birds and a singular, beautiful owl and of course a couple of monk seals, to enjoy a quiet swim at Makehorse Beach. Excellent snorkeling! (We also used the pool quite a bit; one of the most beautiful tile jobs I've ever seen, and again, empty of people!) Matt's info. about making the most of your Molokai trip is very helpful, and Cathi is close by to deal with any questions that come up. We recommend Kumu Farms organic produce, and buying bottled drinking water at one of the stores. Also recommend the Saturday Farmer's Market, a snorkel trip with Molokai Fish and Dive, trying some "real" local food at the cookhouse next to the coffee plantation and don't miss the once-in-a-lifetime Kalaupappa Muleride down 1,674 feet of breath-taking seacliffs to learn about Father Damien's work with the leper colony. We hope to return someday!

I chose Molokai because I have only heard about how secluded and peaceful this Island is. And it was beyond our expectations! Staying at the condo on the far west side added to the peace and quiet. Matt's place is a peaceful hideway and just what we needed for a week of refreshment. The pool is fun for the kids and the beach is a walk away. The Island is not very big so we drove to the other side and spent a day at another secluded beach. The condo area is clean, well-maintained and fun for the kids to run around. The neighbours are all lovely and the local host was so wonderful. It was definitely hard to leave!

OK...where to start? I chose Matt's place on Molokai from its reviews on Airbnb. I had to see his place for myself after reading so many great reviews. All of them were completely true! In fact, the only negative review I read was that it was "too loud" at night due to the animal noises. Are you kidding me? The nightly animal noises, the soft breezes through the open lanai and the sounds of the gentle surf lulled me into my most perfect sleep I have probably ever had each of the 6 nights we were there. I woke each day fully refreshed, without my usual congestion, ready to launch out into the pristine setting that is Paniolo Hale. The apartment is open on 2 sides, one long and one short, by accordion French doors that give way to a wide, screened-in Lanai. You sleep that way, with the doors open, listening to the wonderful ambient sounds cooled perfectly by the breeze. I think I pulled a blanket over myself in the middle of each night, the air was so pleasant. The complex M5 is in (Paniolo Hale) is one of a couple of going concerns nestled in an abandoned resort called Kaluakoi, which shut down due to pulled funding maybe 9 years ago. The desolation that resulted is part of the allure of this location. It is eerily quiet and peaceful. There are no restaurants there, the hotel part of the resort long closed. There was a golf course there as well, which nature has reclaimed, leaving a number of hiking trails along the shore that is divided up into one untouched beach after another. If you want nightlife, this place is not for you. But then, Molokai would not be for you either. It is the personification of calm, peace and quiet. At night, the stars are amazing. Be sure to go down to the beach at night and take them in. The apartment is clean and newly renovated. Everything works well. My wife wanted to take the refrigerator home with us. It is one small bedroom, a comfortable living room, spacious bathroom and well-appointed kitchen. The bed is very comfortable. The couch is very comfortable. Do not bother bringing any books with you, as Matt's family has accumulated quite the library on the spacious shelves behind the couch. My wife had to download one of the books on historic Hawaii the day we left because she couldn't finish it in the time we were there. The appliances are new and work perfectly. The Lanai is unbelievable. Huge and full of the right amount and type of furniture for outdoor comfort. There's a hammock on the porch that my wife spent a lot of her time in. Matt's family is apparently quite artistic and the unit is full of nice artwork and beautiful quilts both as wall decorations and as functional covers for the evening chill. Matt suggests you load up on supplies in Kaunakakai before coming to...

My mother and I visited Matt's place this past week for a week. The whole place was well stocked and we had everything we needed in the kitchen! (We only ate one meal out at Sundown Deli in Kaunakakai. For any gluten free folks out there - the owner was kind and skilled in accommodating my intolerance.) It was great to have a washer/dryer in the unit too. If you are looking for a slower pace this is a great place! There are lots of places nearby to walk and run. The house itself was a perfect place to do yoga. We also spent a lot of time reading. There is comfy furniture inside and out for lounging! When visiting you really need to have a rental car for the duration of your trip, so keep that in mind. There is no reason to get a 4x4 for visiting Paniolo Hale and many places on the island, any rental car will do the trick. Everyone we encountered, locals and visitors, were very friendly. A visit to Matt's place at Paniolo Hale is highly recommended!

What a wonderful place! Very tastefully furnished and well equipped. The lanai (veranda) is a dream! We had a great week on this very special island and can fully confirm all the positive feedbacks from other guests. It is inbeded in a community of condos. Normally very quiet except when neighboring units are occupied; but no problem for us! Matt communicates proactively, comprehensively and promptly! Special thanks to Cathi who was available and very supportive throughout the entire week. We felt well being taken care of. Thank you to both!
