Gene and Kinna's place is great. Highly recommend if you're a hiker, and want a clean, comfortable place to stay, with a hot shower. The bed was comfortable, kitchen was fully stocked, they even provided firewood for the wood stove. There is also a fireplace, but it wasn't col…

Hiker's Roost is a really comfortable place for a High Peaks stay. It looks just like its photos, was perfectly clean, charmingly decorated, and was well supplied with dishes and kitchenware. Lots of wonderful books and guides to surrounding area. We already knew the location ver…

The location was the perfect spot for my dog and I to go hiking in the ADK. Gene and Kinna made check in/check out easy, which is helpful from traveling over 4 hours away. My dog loved having the fenced in back yard and the dog friendly space to stay in. Everything was clean and …

While we certainly don't expect everyone to fall in love with our home, we were left feeling as if our hands were tied with this review. We want our guests to enjoy their stay at The Hiker’s Roost and therefore are committed to helping them with any issues during their stay. But, we can't do much when guests assure us "everything is good" (their brief message after arriving), thank us when they depart, then wait 13 days after their departure date to inform us of the problems they remember during their stay. So, that being said, we’d love to assure our future guests that we are available to help them with any issues which might come up. We’d also like to address the concerns of these guests for anyone considering a stay at The Hiker’s Roost. 1. Soap: Like many hotels/motels/inns in the US, Canada, and overseas, we provide an ecological alternative to the waste of individually wrapped soap bars – and have Mrs. Meyer’s liquid soap in each bathroom for our guests. We also have a bag of used soap bars (an idea of a guest) for anyone who does not like using the liquid soap. We honestly did not anticipate these alternatives would be unpleasant for any guests – but if they are, we will not be offended if you bring your own soap! 2. Maintenance Issues: If anything is not to your liking (such as a sticky door lock), please contact us immediately. Our caretaker lives a mile away from The Hiker’s Roost so if the problem is simple, he can fix it as soon as possible. He is professional and a wonderful person. (The sticky lock is now fixed with a quick spray of lubricant – taking less than 5 minutes). 3. Cleanliness: If the house is not as clean as you’d like, please take a photo and let us know what you’d like improved. We can send our wonderful cleaner over as soon as possible. She works hard and is professional, but sometimes she might have missed something (it’s rare). Regarding the bed linens, we are absolutely certain they were not covered in dog hair. First, it would take many dogs to cover a freshly cleaned queen bed comforter in dog hair and second, the guests used the original linens during their stay and didn’t switch them. When we arrived at The Hiker’s Roost, the bed had the original linens (crumpled and used as with all guests), an extra comforter on top (we provide extra, sheep’s wool comforters for chilly nights), and the original pillows (also used) on it. We would have remembered if a guest had used linens from the spare room and asked them why (in case they had an extra guest without letting us know). That being said, we are a dog friendly (these guests brought their guinea pigs – so I guess we should say animal friendly) place – so we can’t guarantee the accommodation is animal-hair free. Please, if you have any allergies to animals or aversion to seeing an occasional dog hair in a house, we might not be a good fit for you. 4. Recycling: We will always charge for not recycling as it is important as well as mandatory in NYS. We instituted this requirement after the first few years of having to sort recycling from the trash (it’s gross – plain and simple!!). We have never charged but if we ever do, the proceeds will go entirely to the person who has to do the work. We think this is fair. 5. House Design and Style: Finally, the Hiker’s Roost is and always will be a manufactured house. It was built in the mid 1990s and is solid as well as functional. It is not stylish. So, if you’re looking for style and the idea of clear plastic knobs on the faucets makes you cringe, you might want to try elsewhere! We like to say we're an alternative to camping, not a destination resort. In conclusion, we love the Adirondacks and are so excited to host people interested in visiting and exploring the gorgeous, wild area we live in. We hope we’re the right fit for your needs, but if you aren’t sure, please feel welcome to contact us. We want all our guests to have a relaxing, fun time in the mountains and lakes – and as always, please, please let us know if there are issues while we can still provide assistance!

This is the perfect place for hikers to stay. There are a lot of trails not far from it, and Lake Placid is only a 20 minute drive. I would definitely recommend this place to others!!!
