We stayed in Kostas's place for one month. We absolutely loved the home, the location and Skyros. Most importantly, we loved the people, and especially Kostas and his wife, Viola.
Upon arrival, we were greeted at the airport by Kostas and given a ride to the apartment - something that was not expected and most kind. After a brief orientation, we felt at home right away: the apartment was fully equipped, had a nice kitchen, etc. A cleaning lady came every four days to change our sheets and tidy up slightly. She even offered to do the laundry for us once, which was lovely. The apartment had great running water (never issues with temperature or pressure) and excellent WiFi with 3 access points to choose from!
One day, as we were riding around town in our scooter, we were lucky enough to bump into Kostas and Viola, along with the their son, Platon. They offered us to spend an afternoon at their home in Pefkos, which was a very kind gesture. The day we met up, they shared some wonderful treats with us (local ice cream, Greek coffee!), some incredible stories from their lives and about Skyros, and then we enjoyed a swim in their amazing pool and a friendly game of croquet! Platon was a fantastic player and teacher. He is a super bright and mature young man, and hanging out with him was genuinely fun and exciting. As if there were not enough, they invited us to dinner that evening. We all got to hang out and experience real Skyrian hospitality and learn some interesting facts about the place from locals.
I share the details of our gathering because it is important to show just how wonderful Kostas and Viola are, as this reflected very much on the kind of apartment they rented us, and more importantly, on the kind of hospitality and overall impression we received from our vacation on their island.
We would highly recommend staying with them as hosts. It worked for us as a couple on a romantic getaway, and it would work for a family with children as well. The only type of vacationers I think maybe this would not work for is if they were party animals who want to go loud clubbing every night - but of course this is not why you come to Skyros, as you have Mykonos not too far...
As a final tip for those who will be staying in Skyros for the first time (as was the case for us) - rent a scooter or a car! You will get to experience so much more. HUGE thank you and hugs to Kostas, Viola and Platon!
