Welcome to The Green Dragon Guest House! The view and immediate proximity to Crown State Beach make this space truly special. The large windows of the living room look out at a view that spans the Central Bay Area, from Silicon Valley on up to downtown San Francisco and the Bay Bridge. You are just a few steps away from a nearly mile long state beach, where sunsets are stunning! Your bed is also super comfortable, according to other guests who have stayed here. You have your own room, and the rest of the apartment is shared space, with either your host and/or other guests staying here. A stay at the Green Dragon Guest House includes breakfast "essentials" such as coffee, whole milk, bread, jam, butter and eggs, provided for your use (and your own cooking).

Your room is tastefully furnished with a queen sized bed, small desk with a view of the bay and beach, mp3 stereo system, and a closet with dresser. Guests have their own sink, and share the rest of the bathroom with your host or other guests. You have full access to the fully stocked kitchen (you provide your own groceries, of course, by stocked I mean pots, pans, dishes, utensils, spices, condiments, oils, etc.), plus the shared (with me) living and dining room spaces that offer a 54" flatscreen with TiVO DVR and HBO, leather couch, and dining for up to six around the table. As mentioned in "The Space" section above, breakfast "essentials" are offered for your enjoyment (and your own cooking). As a Bay Area resident since I was nine years of age, I know a bit about this place, and as such my guidebook contains four "tours" of certain key areas of the Bay Area. This assists my tourist guests in getting the maximum enjoyment out of their vacation here without having to figure out the best places to go and see all on their own. Along those same lines, as their are many bridges throughout the Bay Area -- and further as most rental car companies I have found charge an arm and a leg for this same thing -- I offer (entirely optional) use of a toll tag for my guests, to drive through the toll plazas without having to stop and pay cash. If you use the toll tag, I then charge you for the tolls you accrued during your stay (plus a modest additional service fee of $6 for your making use of this service).

I am generally, but not always, present at the guest house during your stay. Oftentimes during the day I am working quietly in my office space, which adjoins and is open to the living room space. I am an amenable and caring host, and want you to have this be a wonderful experience while you are here. If there is anything that I can do to make your stay more comfortable, please do not hesitate to ask. I'm also a Bay Area resident since 1976 and know the area pretty well. If you are sightseeing, I can tell you everywhere you want to go and see.
I am also a Master Hand Analyst (modern day palm reader), which is one of the things I do for work. Guests who stay here can also receive a FREE 30-minute reading from me **upon request** of me, provided I am in residence and we can find a mutually agreed upon time to do the reading (a $75 value). It is a sweet and fun way to get to know each other a little better.
Relatively quiet and suburban, right next to the beach. During the day the street is fairly busy, but it is no freeway by any means. We are an easy 15 minute/one-half mile walk and/or short drive to the nearest mall which includes a 24-hour Safeway, a Trader Joe's open from 8am to 9pm, and a Chipotle Mexican Grill restaurant for healthy fast food. Though the street outside does have modest traffic on it during the day, at night it quiets down, making it sometimes difficult to remember that Oakland is only about 7 minutes away.
There is easy parking available nearby, on the street of this suburban neighborhood.
From SFO (no car)
I recommend you take the BART train from the airport to the West Oakland BART station, and then a taxi, Lyft or Uber car service from there (Lyft and Uber are both available via smartphone apps).
From Oakland International (no car)
I recommend you take a taxi, Uber or Lyft.
Using Public Transit Nearby
The AC Transit Bus Line #20 travels conveniently between Shoreline Drive and the Downtown Oakland 12th Street BART ("Bay Area Rapid Transit") Station, taking approximately 20 minutes for the trip and with a bus passing by approximately every 30 minutes from early in the morning until just before Midnight.
BART times are less frequent on weekends and evenings, but are generally about every 10 minutes during the weekday, taking about 15 minutes travel time from Oakland to downtown SF, and running from about 4am until just about Midnight.
Thus it takes between 45 minutes and 1 hour to travel to or from San Francisco and the apartment, by public transit.
The AC 20 Transit line mentioned above runs through the two main shopping districts on the island, as well as past the shopping mall, located 1/2 mile to the East of my apartment along Shoreline.
Guests with cars will need to park on the street, which is generally fairly easy to do provided you are willing to walk about one block, as parking immediately next to the apartment is limited. Check street signs!
There is an Alameda Taxi service, and both Lyft and Uber also run here ~ these are online services where people rent their cars as taxis, and are generally more affordable than a taxi but you must have downloaded the relevant smartphone app AND set up an account in advance to use them.
3.5 miles and/or a 40 minute walk+bus ride away from the apartment is the Alameda Ferry terminal, with service to San Francisco, Oakland, and other destinations throughout the Bay Area. The ferry offers free parking at the terminal, and is a perfect way to get a better taste of the Bay Area than simply driving around by car. SF is a town you can walk through, so consider taking the ferry to it if you are sightseeing.
More info on getting around Alameda or throughout the Bay Area can be found through the Bay Area's 511 website. It can calculate ANY form of transportation for you around the San Francisco Bay Area.
Soap and shampoo provided. Linens changed weekly upon request. I do not make your bed each day, this is not a hotel. I keep the apartment clean and neat, and the apartment is thoroughly cleaned professionally once every two weeks. There is an MP3 hookup for playing music on the living room stereo, and our wireless internet is, as one guest put it, "insanely fast". Send me a message if you have any other questions.
Keep the public areas tidy after use; place used dishes (after thorough scraping or light rinsing) in the dishwasher and run the dishwasher if it is nearly full.
Please recycle when possible. Notify your host when trash or recycling bins are full.
California is experiencing a drought (2014), so we have a "yellow is mellow, brown flushes down" policy for use of the toilet. Additionally, please conserve water, taking short showers and washing dishes with a minimum of water.
Please clean up any large messes (say, from cooking a large meal) promptly, and clean up the living room and dining room spaces immediately after use.
Please take shoes off at the front entry hall. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Please use -- or ask your host to use -- the provided headphones for the living room TV if quiet is desired.
No smoking in the apartment or elsewhere in the buliding; smoking ok on the path across the street (preferred) or on the sidewalk next to the building.
No use of the building swimming pool, sorry. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Let your host know if you notice we are running low on anything such as toilet paper, paper towels, or soap.
You will be expected to leave the apartment in a tidy condition when you depart. Thank you.

Markus is a political activist, Master Hand Analyst and flag dancer extraordinaire. He is both friendly and adaptable to practically anyone who stays in his home. Markus works out of the home, and as an amenable host is often around to make sure you feel right at home and have everything you need, from directions on where to go and what to see. He has been a resident of the Bay Area for most of his life. Provided Markus is home at the time of your visit and we can schedule time to do it, guests desiring it can receive a complimentary 15 minute hand reading from him as a part of your stay, **upon request**.
