Come and stay in one of the best neighbourhoods and experience eco living at its finest in a century-old residence, just 1/2 hour from downtown. Designed and renovated by a leading green building strategist—this is how life is meant to be lived.

Welcome to the Riverdale Eco House. You're going to love the warm heated floors, the fresh air, and the daylight in this cozy century-old home.

YOU GET: A 2-bedroom and two-bath apartment with a separate entrance, private kitchen in a fully-detached house.

You will sleep in a luxurious Queen-sized natural organic rubber mattress bed. There are luggage racks to put your suitcases on in the main bedroom.

There is a twin-sized bed in the smaller bedroom. It sleeps one.

You can comfortably fit sleep five people (two in the master bedroom; one in the smaller bedroom; and two in the living room).

I provide clean, fresh linens on the beds, and all the clean, plush towels you need (bath size, personal size and face cloth). You have exclusive use of your very own stylish, bathroom with a clawfoot tub featuring a low-flow shower head. I have low-tox body wash, soap and shampoo, if you need it.

The salvaged kitchen is very modern with stainless steel countertop, marble backsplash, frosted glass with aluminum-framed uppers, and a large gas stove, and large fridge. There is a brand-new 6'x8' cedar deck at the back overlooking the stepped cedar window well and back yard complete with a small gas barbecue, that you are welcome to use while you are here.

The couch in the living room is a pull-out couch with a Queen-sized mattress that sleep two.

ABOUT THE NEIGHBOURHOOD: The house is only two blocks away from the great restaurants of Greektown on the Danforth. This is a neighbourhood where you will bump into the guitarist from Triumph, the lead singer of the Bare Naked Ladies, etc. It is a super quiet house that feels like a bit of country in the city because it is so set back from the street, you almost miss it. For families and active people, you're going to want to spend lots of time in the 26-acre park just steps away that has a walking trails and a great view of the city skyline. It really is one of the best parks in the city.

ABOUT THE BUILDING: I'm a Green building Strategist and Interior Designer and I've been renovating this house for a while and it is a work in progress. Here is a list of the features that have been built in so far: super-insulated walls on the ground floor; hydronic in-floor heating; high efficiency hot water heating; drain water heat recovery; salvaged model suite kitchen cabinets, counter and backsplash; restored original plaster mouldings; Energy Star appliances; IDA-approved lighting; LED lighting in the main kitchen; low toxicity finishes; FSC-certified natural cedar decking; native plantings; and urban gardens. The front porch is a work in progress, and we will be working on finishing that this spring.

We are the most proud of our 5 kW of solar panels on the roof of the house and garage. We have even been featured on the CBC News!

FITNESS ACTIVITIES: Bring your workout gear and get yourself down to the Joy of Dance and enjoy some of the best Zumba classes in North America on Saturdays and Sundays at 12 pm. Or catch a Ginga class there on Wednesday nights at 6 pm. Go skating in Withrow Park. Go for a swim at the Frankland Community Centre. Have an infrared sauna at the Inspired Life Health Centre. Go for a shiatsu massage at Shiatsu Masters (the owner gave Marilyn Monroe a massage that she raved about in the 1950's—seriously!). I also know the best coffee shops, chiropractors and naturopaths in the city.

ECO AND ALLERGY FRIENDLY: I'm a big environmentalist, so I keep the house non-toxic, eco-friendly and scent-free, however I do live with a Cornish Rex cat—he will be staying at the kitty spa while you are here and he is not hypoallergenic. The sheets/towels are washed in environmentally-friendly detergent. The hand soap is natural and non-toxic.

GREEN VIBES: I'm a green building consultant and artist. I work from home and consult on projects around Toronto, across Canada, in the U.S. and in the U.K., so if you want to talk about the green building industry, share contacts, discuss how to pursue these jobs in Toronto, or plan a collaboration, feel free to chat with me about this. I can also give you a tour of the house and show you all of the eco features. I teach the Sustainable Building Advisor program for the Canada Green Building Council.

Guests have access to the main floor and second floor. The basement and the garages is off-limits. The back deck and back yard is shared with the downstairs unit.

You'll pick up your key from a lockbox. I will give you a list of contacts that you can call if you have an emergency.

This is by far one of the best neighbourhoods in Toronto, and is very popular during Taste of the Danforth. Up the street is block after block of charming coffee shops and restaurants. The shopping and excitement of downtown is less than half an hour away. If you want to experience the best of comfort living Toronto, you can't find a better location to stay in. It is super quiet at night and accessible to all of the excitement of downtown.

PARKING: Street parking permits are available online, and is complimentary, however, I encourage use of public transportation while you are here.

TRANSPORTATION TO/FROM AIRPORT: Many guests are asking how best to get here from the airport. You can get here easily from the airport by taking the 192 Airport Rocket to Kipling Station, and then the Bloor-Danforth Subway line to Pape Station. The stop is a bit difficult to find at the airpoirt (look for the 'Bus' logo) but it is an express bus to the furthest west station on the line. It takes 45-55 minutes to get to Pape Station, and I am just five minutes' walk from there. A cab from Pearson International Airport is about $65 plus tip.

ACCESSIBILITY TO DOWNTOWN: The Pape 72 bus runs directly to Bay Street downtown and you can pick it up just around the corner. The subway is just a couple of blocks walk away. You will want to see the sights of Toronto from the 504 streetcar along Broadview avenue on your way to and from downtown—it has unparalleled views of the city skyline.

I have fast and reliable free wifi for you. I'll send you the Wi-Fi Network name and password just a few days before you arrive.
