It was Jwan's first real airbnb experience & he has truly enjoyed, as I did, the beautiful atmosphere, the warm welcoming, the natural generosity & the strong human connections Emel & Can offered us. We shared such nice moments together such as evening chats, dinners, family breakfast, monastery tour & much more. Emel helped me out to track my lost laptop in Sabıha airport, she gave us very useful indications for must see or must eat... Discussing with Can was also extremly interesting... & eventually, their lovely son & cat (+Emel's sister, the lovely neighbours & friends) contributed in making our stay simply magic. Beside the human aspects, the place is absolutely gorgeous: Emel & Can worked hard on rehabilitating this beautiful house & they succeeded in turning it into a unique special home, full of poetry & magic details... this house makes you feel LOVE. Jwan & I do thank you guys so much for everything! Hope to meet again!

Our host, Can, greeted us on the day of our arrival and was very welcoming. But the next morning we met his wife, Emel, who was confrontational and claimed my profile picture was an ill representation of who I am. I was shocked and upset and not quite sure what she had an issue with, since the photo is a black and white close up portrait where I'm wearing a hat and headphones. She even said the girl in the photo looked very well traveled, cool and pretty, to which my sister asked, 'aren't we?' But she didn't respond. I clocked on afterwards that perhaps she had a problem with my headscarf (?!?) which I wasn't wearing in the picture. This upset me a great deal and made us feel very unwelcome. I've never encountered anything like this before, and even found myself trying to appease her, when what I actually wanted was to ask for a refund and get out of there. On our third and last day, Emel seemed more relaxed and even packed some breakfast for us in Tupperware, which was kind of her, but frankly the sudden change in mood was surprising to us. Living in a strangers house can be awkward even at the best of times. Needless to say, after that initial encounter we were on tenterhooks for the duration of our stay. This is a shame, as the house is utterly stunning, beautifully restored and decorated. Facilities were clean and comfortable. The rock-cave shower was especially awesome, and made up for the fact that we didn't have the time to go for a traditional hamam in town. And finally the location is ideal: in the heart of the old town; within walking distance of all the main attractions; easy to access from the main road, where you can catch a minibus to other towns/the airport. We'd recommend this place to other visitors... but mind you don't get too creative/expressive with your profile photo. Alternatively, Muslim girls in headscarf need not book! I'm not sure if this also applies to nuns in habit.

One of the my best airbnb experience so far. Emel&Can are wonderful hosts. They made me feel so much welcome, it felt like second home. The house is a very authentic and traditional stone house. Can, who is an architect designed the house by himself. Immaculate attention to detail. In particular, the bathroom is decorated by rocks and stones which gives very authentic feel. Both Emel and Can are very friendly and quite intellectual. We had very stimulating conversations. They also gave excellent recommendations for restaurants, and shops in Mardin. In short, it is the best accommodation you can ever find in Mardin even in Turkey. Highly recommended!!!

In 2013 Emel went to Mardin for a photo shoot. She met with Can. They were both lost during that period and very happy to have found each other. And they started renovating their rented house. It was abandoned and in a very bad condition. After 9 months of renovation, the house started to breathe again. Now, airbnb helps to keep our beautiful 150 year old stone house warm with guests from all around the world.
