The cottage is a nice place to hang out and sits on the edge of the village, a short walk away from the river. It comfortably sleeps four adults or two adults and two children. There are a double bed and two twin beds. Upon request we can supply a baby bed.

The house has a good size living room with a little book exchange (you can borrow books during your stay, but also swap one if you haven't finished by the end of your stay) and there are plenty of board games to be played. There is also a stereo to connect your iPod or computer.

There is a well equipped kitchen for you to use and a dining table inside as well as on the terrace in front of the house. There is also a BBQ on the terrace. The bathroom has a shower, bidet and we can provide you with a baby bath.

We love our cottage and hope you do too.

We are located on the outskirts of the village of São Jorge. We are very close to Portugal’s only national park. The Peneda-Gerês National Park offers you amazing walking, cycling or horse riding opportunities. Inside it’s borders you can find mountain streams and waterfalls, ancient villages and some truly stunning scenery.

Only about 45 minutes by car and you will find yourself on Portugal’s stunning Atlantic coast. Whether you would like to lay in the sand and soak up the sun, or head out for some world class surf, this section of coast has it. The local markets are where you can find all the hustle, bustle, and flavour of life in Portugal. We have several markets in our area. The biggest in Europe can be found in Barcelos, about 1 hour away. We are lucky here in the Minho. Just down the road, about 10 minutes walk away we have this beautiful swimming spot, along the grassy banks of the river Lima. On the weekend lots of families from the surroundings go there for a picnic and a dip. But on weekdays, you often have the place to yourself. A little further away in Arcos de Valdevez (10 min. drive) you have access to one of Europe’s cleanest rivers, the Vez. A wonderful opportunity to cool off. Don’t leave without your swimming things!

There are plenty of other ways to spend your time. The Rota da Vinhos Verdes gives you the chance to sample the local specialty wine in some stunning settings. We know a lovely lady in the neighbourhood who does a tour of her vineyard and farm upon our request.

The historic cities of Braga and Guimarães are within easy reach by car (less than an hour away).

We provide you with a TomTom that comes fully loaded with our preferred places in the region. From beautiful viewpoints, good restaurants or vineyards to visit its all in the GPS given to you at check-in. There are guidebooks and tourist info in the house as well. Just to make exploring the area as easy as possible.

During your stay you can use everything on site: garden furniture, barbecue, games, hula hoops, hammocks, WiFi, a washing machine, toaster and oven. Upon request there are mountainbikes available to you for exploring the surroundings.

We live a short drive away (10 minutes) in the next village. Close enough to just drop by if you have a question or just fancy a drink.

We organise weekly pizza nights at our property for our guests and friends. We light our wood burning pizza oven and make pretty mean pizza's (or so our visitors often say).

The cottage is situated on the edge of the village of São Jorge. In a quiet location. Our neighbours are mostly busy working on their small holdings: herding cows and sheep, growing their grapes and harvesting cabbage for caldo verde (the traditional soup).
The nearest towns (Arcos de Valdevez and Ponte de Barca) are an 8 minute drive away. There is a weekly market on wednesday and a wide range of shops and supermarkets.

There are two cafe's in the village Cafe Pedro and Cafe Sao Jorge, that are always open for a coffee, a beer, some local wine or an ice cream. At Cafe Sao Jorge there is also a small supermarket that has a small selection of basic groceries. Enough for breakfast or a simple meal. Both cafe's are a 5 minute walk away from the house.

There are good bus links from Arcos de Valdevez to the rest of Portugal. From Arcos to us by taxi costs around €10. There are three busses a day from Arcos to São Jorge and back. Cesario our local taxi driver will be happy to take you anywhere you want.

From the airport there are 4 buses direct to Arcos each day offered by Barquense at the following times, (PHONE NUMBER HIDDEN) and 16:50, plus two extra ones on weekends at 09:40 and 15:30 (please make sure to check these times yourself by visiting their website). There are also airport transfers to Braga offered by Getbus, and from Braga there are frequent busses to Arcos.

Ben

I have been living in Portugal in the small village of Vale for the last 3 years. I have Quinta do Figo Verde with its small campsite, and also the little cottage in the neighbouring village.

On the land I am trying to establish a permaculture inspired space in which to grow food to support me and the small campsite I have built.

I have spent many years travelling and feel that I have finally found a home in the mountains of northern Portugal.
