A very beautiful traditional, yet modern wooden Thai-style house is located in Amphawa, Samut Songkram, on Meklong River, about 65 km South of Bangkok, one of Bangkok residents' favorite day-and weekend travel destinations.

Le logement

Darawati is different from others in Amphawa in its wooden structure and style, which is traditional Thai. Sit on high stilts the master bedroom on the west wing of the house accommodates a family of 4 on 2 mattresses laid next to each other on the wooden floor. The mattresses are covered by light white mosquito nets. This is an authentic traditional Thai bedroom, with an air conditioner, and 2 windows. The sister bedroom on the east wing accommodates 2 guests with a real wooden bed. The bedroom has 4 windows open to the lush green environment around the house.

Accès des voyageurs

Most outstanding characters of Darawati are its wooden and traditional Thai architecture and the green surrounding provided by lots of trees in the house compound and the neighborhood. Guests will have the access to both the traditional Thai atmosphere of the countryside, and the modern lifestyle with all modern amenities, including air conditioner, refrigerator, open-roof bathroom, and a traditional Thai living room and front and back porch in the open air. Internet access through high speed wi-fi is provided.

Échanges avec les voyageurs

Guests are welcome to participate in occasional social events in the house compound. Breakfast is included. Other meals are not included, but can be arranged on request.

Autres remarques

The host is a local tour guide. He can offer useful tips and assistance for guests to experience local life and tourist activities. However, sometimes he may away for work during guest's stay, in which case, his wife will interact with guests instead. A small inconvenience may be that she doesn't speak English well enough.

We had a great time at Somboon's place with our two small kids (one of 2 months and one aged two years). The accomodation is very clean and tidy. We loved the outdoor space and the atmosphere of a typically thai house. A real bonus is that Somboon and his wife take great care of you: they arrange trips, drivers and food, and show you the nice places (no extra cost!). But it's true that the house is not in the touristic centre so you need help to get somewhere... Luckely they are very flexible and short-term trips are no problem. Somboon's wife cooked for us and it was very delightful, a true thai meal (eventhough we just asked a couple of hours in advance). The rooms are cleaned every day with great eye for detail. There is a nice coffee shop nearby where you can have a snack (2min walk, open untill 18:00). The bigest downside for us was the busy road. Luckely the house has a big private courtyard but the noise can be quite disturbing at nighttime. So if you don't mind some traffic noise, this is a terrific place to stay with wonderful reliable hosts.

Thanks Elfie for generous review. The experience of hosting you and your family was great. I am happy that you like our place. Unfortunately the traffic in the neighborhood can be unpleasant sometimes. It is beyond our authority to change it. I hope it didn't disturb your sleep too much as we have air-conditioned bedrooms and glass windows.

We - my husband and I plus three teenagers - have been three different places in Thailand, and this is our absolute favorite! We felt very much at ease and at home at Somboons place. The rooms are beautiful and nice, there is a lot of space, Also on the premise. Yes, you need a lift (Somboon was very helpful driving or calling tuk tuk) to go to Amphawa (which is very nice, especially the weekend market) or elsewhere, but this really isn't a problem. Somboon has good tips regarding where to go, also regarding restaurants. Thank you Somboon, Ohm and the kind neighbour, for all your smiles, nice chats and help. Your kindness was beyond the call of duty. To all western travellers: if you want to experience the real Thailand, go to Somboon's.

It's all about expectations. Ours were somewhat different than the experience, and we didn't quite feel that the cost/value ratio was in our favor. With respect to the pictures describing the space they are quite accurate except for the one with the food that we don't quite recognize. The place is as presented, and without knowledge of traditional Thai architecture and building style I guess the house with the two guestrooms is in traditional style. Anyway, it was really nice looking; the building style was however not so imortant for us. Otherwise, all was just nice with the room and amenities. The picture showing a prepared meal is quite more tempting than what was provided as breakfast at the small neighboring by-the-road restaurant. We read the part about rowing by the nearby canal to the Amphawa floating market as a real offer. Perhaps the rowing is, but as we don't understand Thai there were nobody there to inform about this. The host was unfortunately not present during our stay, and phone conversation between two who don't speak a common language really well is far from optimal. The description of a rowing trip to the market made us think that the distance to Amphawa/market is really short and the town centre being within an easy walk. The indication on the map of the location supported this. The distance however equals a some 10 minutes tuktuk trip. We felt a bit isolated. It's right that it's in the countryside and that there is forest around, or at least on one side. On the other side and close to the property, however, there is a road with considerably traffic. So - nothing wrong about the place, but still not to our expectations.

The accommodation is very good, very clean, with air conditioning, TV, water heater... The landlord is very enthusiastic, when we do not know the way of the initiative to drive us, also, to send us to the water market, eat local Food. Thanks to somboon!
