Oscar’s Barn offers self catering accommodation worthy of the Visit England 4* Gold Award, Customer Choice Award 2016 and a Visit England Rose Award 2017. The barn is situated near to the remains of the historic Roman fort and village of Piercebridge in County Durham. It is within easy reach of a host of major tourist attractions including ‘Kynren’ – an epic tale of England with a cast of over 1500 performers in Bishop Auckland every summer, the National Railway Museum at Shildon, Croft Motor Racing Circuit, the Tees Barrage International White Water Course at Stockton and the Riverside International Cricket Ground at Chester-le-Street.
The barn nestles on a hillside in the beautiful countryside of the Raby Castle Estates land (a visit to the deer park and castle is a must), and offers far reaching views over open fields towards the Pennines in the west and to the North York Moors in the east. Oscar’s Barn is some 10 minutes drive from the centre of the historic Victorian market town of Darlington with its refurbished Hippodrome Theatre, multiplex cinema complex together with many restaurants and bars. Numerous farm shops, tea rooms, cafés, garden centres, ice cream parlours, country pubs, including the renowned Raby Hunt Michelin star restaurant, can be found in the surrounding countryside all within easy driving distance.
Perfect for walkers and cyclists or guests just wanting to enjoy a quiet getaway or romantic break, Oscar’s Barn consists of a first floor studio apartment with stunning views across open countryside from its grand floor to ceiling arched window. The barn has been furnished to a very good standard giving a contemporary feel whilst retaining character and charm with its exposed beams. The pretty well equipped kitchen/dining area overlooks the extensive landscaped gardens and wildlife pond with its mini-waterfall. There are several patio areas to choose from at both the front and rear of this historic property. Guests also enjoy private use of the summerhouse, chiminea and gas barbecue, and can spend evenings in peace and tranquillity watching the ever-varying bird and wildlife. On clear nights Oscar’s Barn is a must for stargazers as there is no local street lighting. To the rear of the property is unspoilt woodland which is home to a restored Grade II listed original limekiln from which the owner’s property takes its name, and a small welcome basket stocked with local treats greets you on your arrival.
Oscar’s Barn makes an ideal touring base for the surrounding areas with many attractions such as the Bowes Museum at Barnard Castle and Durham city with its fantastic cathedral and castle, an annual jazz festival and the spectacular ‘Lumiere’ light show. To the south are the delightful market towns of Richmond and Northallerton just a short drive away, the barn is just a 15-minute drive from the major A1 (north/south) and A66 (east/west) routes and the delights of the North Yorkshire coastline with its numerous quaint harbours and ports are also within easy driving distance. Slightly further afield and little more than an hour’s drive away lie the cities of York and Newcastle or you can enjoy a day in the beautiful Yorkshire Dales or Lake District. There are many lovely walks over Raby Estates land and down by the River Tees in Piercebridge itself. You are guaranteed a very warm welcome from your hosts and can be assured of a peaceful and very enjoyable stay. Shop, pub and restaurant 2½ miles.
