Apartment w twin bed, bathroom and large terrace overlooking the Val D'Orcia and the medieval town of Seggiano at the foot of Monte Amiata in South central Tuscany, halfway between Siena and the beaches of Maremma. Xtra bed available for 3rd guest

The Podere San Martino is a 4 hectare (10 acre) traditional Tuscan farm (certified organic) situated in one of the last truly unspoiled and untrodden areas of Tuscany. Podere San Martino consists of small group of newly renovated and charming stone buildings located at the end of a tree lined private country lane, on a ridge overlooking the town Seggiano with accommodations for up to five people in two separate furnished apartments: the "Olivella" and the "Elm".

The accommodations:
The "Olivella" has a spacious living room with a kitchen and dining area and a comfortable double bedroom with adjoining bathroom. The living room is furnished with a sofa bed.

The "Elm" consists of a large double bedroom with bathroom and a terrace overlooking the Val d'Orcia.
Both apartments have independent entrances.

The original stone pizza oven is available to guests, as are various picnic areas, flower and vegetable gardens, cherry orchards, vineyards and 4 hectares of olive groves.

The landscape:
Located in Southern Tuscany at the foot of Monte Amiata (1,768 M) and on the border of the provinces of Siena and Grosseto, San Martino is half way between the medieval towns of Seggiano and Castel del Piano.
From its hill top, looking down into the Val D’Orica, Podere San Martino offers 360 degrees of panoramic views; with sunrise above Monte Amiata, the extinct volcano once considered sacred to the Etruscans - to the East and spectacular sunsets over the Potentino Castel (11th century) and the down across the Val D’Orcia to the West, where on a clear day, the hills of Corsica are visible on the horizon.

The area is internationally renown for both, its olive oil, Olivastra Seggianese (DOP) and its wines; Montecucco, Brunello di Montalcino and Morellino di Scansano.

The history of San Martino
The first documented origins of Podere San Martino date back to the fourteenth century, when it was the hermitage of a community of Franciscan monks who tended the farm’s fields, vineyards and olive groves. Local legends recount tales of a lost Etruscan treasure hidden on the farm somewhere within its surrounding hills.

Podere San Martino stands in what can be considered one of the last truly wilderness areas in Tuscany where one can encounter boar, deer, porcupines, hedgehogs and hear the songs of cuckoo, upapa, thrushes and black birds, the cries of falcons, hawks and in the evening the nightingale.

Wi-Fi, mountain bike

Places to visit:
Parco degli Etruschi - Parco Faunistico del Monte Amiata, the Monte Labbro Natural Reserve

During the autumn one can search for wild mushrooms in the nearby chestnut groves and beech wood forests on Monte Amiata. In winter the slopes of Monte Amiata offer over 25 km of ski and snowboard trails.

We are a short distance from the historic and cultural heritage sites of interest such as Pienza , Montalcino, San Quirico d'Orcia, Montepulciano and many exclusive thermal spas (terme) as well as hot springs open to the public without charge, such as Bagni S. Filippo, Bagno Vignoni, Petriolo and Saturnia.

For contemporary art lovers the farm faces the Sculpture Garden of Daniel Spoerri, one of the cofounders of the Nouveau réalisme (New realism) artistic movement founded in 1960 with the art critic Pierre Restany and the painter Yves Klein. The Garden contains sculptures by the leading artists of the Nouveau réalisme and Fluxis movements, such as Armand, Jean Tinguely, Eva Aeppli and Dieter Roth as well as works by many younger contemporary artists.

Hiking and mountain bike
For lovers of hiking and mountain biking there are many beautiful trails through the unspoiled natural mountain setting;
“A recent network of trails crisscrosses Amiata, uniting the mountain towns between themselves and the peak, and allowing the gathering together of an extraordinary natural and cultural patrimony. At the same time, this network links up with the principle routes which pass through the rest of the Sienese and Grosseto provinces, underscoring the centrality of southern Tuscany, and lending a regional scope to the existing system of trails. The trails stretch to about 215 Km/134 miles, divided into two main routes linked to the great ring around the volcanic cone, for a total of 19 main trails which include surrounding paths.”

Abbey of Sant'Antimo
The original Benedictine monastery dating to the time of Charlemagne (742-814) approximately 10 km from Montalcino about 9 km from the Via Francigena, the pilgrim route to Rome.
