Located in the fun, walkable neighborhood of St. Johns, enjoy a truly Portland experience with backyard chickens, garden of edibles and art, and all kinds of unique amenities (including hot tub)!. Walk to hiking, the river, restaurants, and attractions. Kid-friendly. Private entrance. This is a private "home within a home" that can work well for groups of 2-9, depending on needs. We warmly welcome people of all colors, nationalities, gender and sexual orientations.
2 large bedrooms both have queen beds. One also has an additional day bed. This summer (by mid June) a third room will also be available that will have a bunk bed and a trundle. Currently, there is a third sleeping room space with a single futon that doubles as the family room. The kitchenette area includes a mini-fridge, microwave, and deluxe retro toaster oven, as well as 4 ways to make coffee! We stock you with basics (coffee, tea, spices, oil, butter) and kitchenware/items you may need. Stores are right around the corner. There is a lovely kitchen table that can seat up to 6 and which opens to a smaller lounge area with books, games, and a comfy couch. While there is no stove/oven in the kitchenette, there IS a hot plate where you can cook up your eggs fresh from the chicken coop. There is a large toaster oven, microwave, and mini fridge, as well as a rice cooker/steamer. The larger lounge area has a television with Netflix, a DVD player (with an assortment of DVDs to choose from), and a large carpeted space for exercising (weights, yoga mats, exercise balls available). You'll find art supplies and chalkboard and dry-erase surfaces for your art and get to see backyard chickens from your windows.
At The Red Roost Guesthouse, you have your own separate entrance, a view of the entertaining chickens, a karaoke machine, access to a hot tub to warm you, and amenities and toys for all ages. The backyard has a small quiet private space for enjoying coffee in the sun but you also have access to two large sitting porches (including a porch swing), outdoor picnic area, children's play structure, a hammock, and edible fruit all around in summer. For an additional charge, you may rent a bouncy house for the kids or enjoy a home-cooked breakfast with eggs from our chickens. The garage and fire pit are not available to be used by guests. Keyless entry makes for ease. WiFi is included and phone service anywhere in the US is free on our land line.
We are an active and busy family of (mom, dad, and two kids still at home (11 year old girl and 8 year old boy). Big brother is home from college sometimes too. We live upstairs in a separate home within the larger home. So, it's the best of both worlds because we are close by and available but also perfectly able to give you all the privacy you may like. In the summer, you may find us outside sharing the yard spaces with you. Dana (mom of the house) works part-time from home so is available much of the time to act as a concierge and ambassador of sorts for your stay in Portland if needed. Hot tub is available anytime.
We are close to movies, food carts (and a beer bus!), bus routes, vintage shops, coffee shops, and lovely river walks. Several grocery stores are within walking distance. We are in the quirky Portland Village of St. Johns, which is distinctive for things like holding community "Cake Lucks" (like a potluck but ALL CAKE!), host to the BigFoot Society meetings, and Star Trek in the Park. You cant get more Portland than this. You can walk to the river, to the St.Johns Bridge (which the Golden Gate was based on), to shops, and the State Park with hiking trails is visible just across the river 5 minutes away. We provide our guests suggested walking guides based on interests to experience all the neighborhood has to offer and a list of local attractions and restaurants. From The Baowry (killer upscale Korean buns), to Patti's Homeplate (a place where you can listen to a real jukebox and do family karaoke on Saturdays over a malted), to cocktails and good food at Leisure or Signal Pizza (a pizza shop in an old-fashioned gas station)...we've got you covered.
We are located about 20 minutes from the airport and 15 minutes from downtown Portland. There are several bus routes within walking distance from the house. Sometimes, we can pick you up at the airport directly for a charge comparable to a cab (must be arranged in advance). We live near great bike trails and there are places in town where you can rent bikes.
Sometimes small groups like to retreat here- for meetings we have whiteboard capacity and can set up conference like seating for a group of 8 or fewer.

We live upstairs in a separate space. You choose the interaction level. We are happy to give you all the privacy you would like. We are also happy to support you in a concierge-style manner and provide a personal touch in helping you navigate Portland and find what you need. In summer, we enjoy spending time with guests outside when it is desired. Our kids often make friends with the kids of our guests.
We have a two night minimum for weekends. However, if it is the off-season, or if we have not been booked by mid-week for that weekend, please feel free to ask us if we will consider a one night booking! Also ask us about early check-in or late check-out. If we can accommodate we will. We want to maximize your value. It's not a guarantee, as it depends on other reservations and our plans, but we are often able to do it. If you have a youngster, we are happy to provide age-appropriate toys, a pack n play, and other relevant parenting essentials so you do not need to shlep them with you. This requires advance notice to ensure we have time to bring in what you need. Just check in about what you need and we will do our best to make you and your little one/s at home. The house is unfortunately not handicapped accessible. There are several stairs down to the entrance of the house.
Quiet time is between 10 pm and 8am for guests and residents.

Please keep gate to yard closed at all times.
Dana is your host at The Red Roost Guesthouse, along with her husband Eric and their three kids. We are an active, positive, progressive family that appreciates beauty, comfort, the arts, civic responsibility, and connection. Depending on which of us you find, you might find us singing or making art, drinking coffee from a french press, playing drums or drinking kombucha made by Eric, acting out Harry Potter movies, hanging on a trapeze, or just communing with the chickens. Dana's motto is "Take it easy, but take it." We can give you privacy or support your stay with a bit more care and connection. You are our guest.
