The house is one of the pair of two-storeyed Victorian style townhouses, was designed in 1906, the architect unknown. The land on which the house is constructed was bought from the owner Sir Liege Hulett by Mr. Bassa, a wealthy rice merchant. The Bassa family employed a cook and even a seamstress and entertained many travelers. One of these early visitors was the young lawyer, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. Three generations of the Bassa Family lived in the house for sixty years until 1964 when the Group Areas Act forced the family to sell and move elsewhere.
In 1988 a conservation award was awarded by City of Durban for the restoration of this historic house.
The property has been recently renovated to combine simple elegance and a clean modern interior.
