Description

Superb detached villa with a view over Lake Como, surrounded by a quiet 1000-square-metre garden with olive and fruit trees: an oasis of tranquility. Two minutes’ walk from Vezio castle, ten minutes’ from Varenna.

A villa in the heart of Vezio, surrounded by greenery, far from noise and bustle, with a glorious view over Lake Como.
The house sleeps six, in a double room with a 60-square-metre terrace, a smaller room with a large single bed, and a double sofa-bed in the downstairs living room, and smaller room with single bed.
Two bathrooms, one with a massage-bath and the other with a shower. Spacious American-style kitchen, opening onto 1000-square-metre garden with fruit trees and barbecue.
Dining/living room with fire-place, television and DVD-player.
Studio/playroom.
Laundry room with washing machine and dryer.
Just below the villa there is charming local restaurant and five minutes’ drive away visitors can eat at midday or in the evening at the "CROTTO DEL PEPOT", an enchanting place perched in a ravine above the rushing waters of a mountain stream.

IMPORTANT!!!!! The villa is not on the road; it can be only be reached on foot, after a five-minute walk from the car-park.

By car: from Milan, SS36 direction Lecco. After Lecco, take the first exit for Abbadia Lariana, turn right for Varenna center and go through the village. At the bridge turn right for Esino Lario, and, after some hairpin bends, turn right again for Vezio/Castle of Vezio. Keep going until the end of the carriage road and park in the huge upper car parking.
I'll wait for the parking lot. To give you the Pass of the machine and to accompany you to the house that can only be reached on foot. Please send a text message to my cell phone when you're up to Lecco.

VEZIO
The village of Vezio is perched on a rocky outcrop half-way up Lake Como. It began its existence, some time around the sixth century BC, as a Ligurian Celtic, possibly even Etruscan, settlement.
Its name probably comes from Vescia, a small town near Rome which was the birthplace of Vescianus, the Roman legionary who was tasked with building and commanding the castrum at Vezio.
At that time Rome was establishing its authority over the whole of the North of Italy in order to guard against incursions by the peoples of northern Europe.
It was in this historical context that a fort was built at Vezio, dominating the shores of the lake and the town of Varenna, which had sprung up on the promontory below.
Later on the Lombards came and built a 60-foot tower which, legend has it, was occupied by Queen Theodolinda.
The history of the castle is linked to that of the lake-side town of Varenna, to which it was joined by two long defensive curtain-walls.
In 1244, when for the first time Varenna rebelled against its feudal overlords in Como and was razed in retaliation, the population took refuge in the impregnable heights above. The town was destroyed, but the castle held out.
Vezio and Varenna passed through the hands of a succession of signorie, the French, and the Spanish.
In 1778 the fief of Varenna and Vezio became the property of the Milanese house of Crivelli Serbelloni, which held it until the 19th century. At the beginning of the 20th century it was acquired by the Greppi family.
Varenna is an ancient lake-side town; like Vezio, it is probably of Ligurian-Celtic origin and was later romanised. Written records of the town go back to 493 AD, the year in which Coiro’s history of Milan appeared.
On 24 June 1169 the inhabitants of the island of Comacina fled to the other side of the lake. Their homes had been destroyed by the people of Como, who supported the Emperor Frederic Barbarossa, and they were welcomed and given shelter in Varenna. The event is still remembered and celebrated in a series of pageants, generally held in July.
Today Varenna boasts several fine villas in classical style which embellish the shore of the Lake and have gardens of considerable botanical interest.
Above the main square stands the Basilica dedicated to Saint George, a handsome example of fourteenth-century Lombard Romanesque architecture.
Bellagio is located on the promontory that separates the two lower arms of Lake Como. Besides its natural beauty, it is renowned for its noble villas, which have always fascinated successive generations of great artists, from Manzoni to Flaubert and from Liszt to Toscanini. Its Grand Hotel became a popular destination for travelers from all over the world in the nineteenth century, and still serves as a venue for important international summits.

The villa enjoys silence and tranquility but it is not accessible by car.
Opportunity to request a shuttle service and luggage rack.
Ability to request a dinner or lunch custom.
