Accès des voyageurs
You can use entire house and yard. Shed remains locked and is not for renters' use. If you bring a pet, there is a small fenced in area off the screen porch. Otherwise, your pet should be leashed. If the pet must "run" go up Herder Rd and look for a gravel driveway on left side, not far from cottage. Drive down in a bit, staying beyond the house to your left, and let her go!! This road goes down to an area that is probably going to be "developed" one day, but so far, there's been no activity! We also let our dogs run at Clark Cove (our public access beach) at low tide when there are no other folks around.

We will be available via text or phone call. We will have a caretaker in the area and that person's name and contact info will be available when you arrive at the house. You'll find lots of brochures in the cottage about local restaurants, etc. Some of our favorites are the Chart Room in Hulls Cove, Rosalie's on Cottage Street for pizza, Cafe This Way off Mt. Desert St., down behind the row of shops (look for sign) for great breakfasts. For some fun, "high end" Mexican food, a little pricey, try XYZ Restaurant in Southwest Harbor. Watch for the fish man who parks overlooking Southwest Harbor for fresh fish. For "popovers," an island tradition, try Common Goods in Southwest Harbor next to post office, open every morning. For a fancier popover and fish chowder on the porch, try Asticou Inn in Northeast Harbor. It has replaced Jordan Pond House Restaurant which used to be our "go to" popover and tea on the lawn place until management changed hands and it went down hill.
Feel free to use picnic items, walking sticks, binoculars, backpacks for hiking. Fun places to picnic are at Seawall, also Thompson Island, which you pass on your way onto Mount Desert Island. You can buy live lobsters at the top of Knox Rd., or at Trenton Bridge or Downeast Lobster Pound back over the bridge in Trenton. Trenton Bridge Lobster Pound is also a favorite.
In the house: please note that ceilings are low for a 6'3" person. Also, the hot water heater is 6 gallons. It replenishes quickly, but you can't run the hot water for a long time without it turning cool. If you want to take unlimited, long hot showers, our cottage may not be for you.
You will need your own bed linens and bath towels, toiletries. We supply pillows (with pillow protectors), comforter (and mattress protector). The large bed is queen size, the bunk beds, if you will use them because your children are with you, or because your spouse is snoring loudly, will need twin sheets. If you get chilly, feel free to use the blankets on the twin beds as extra blankets if you are not using the twin beds. If there are only two of you, you can use the second bedroom as a type of "walk in closet." We often lay clothes out on the lower bunk bed. But there is also a rattan dresser in the larger bedroom with shelves and doors. We also put our purchases in that second bedroom so they are out of the way until we are packing up to leave. You may also find the vacuum stored there, if we know no children are in your party.
We will supply toilet paper, paper towels, clean sponge, dish cloth, and dish detergent for your use. Broom, etc. are behind the dark brown curtain in kitchen. Cleaning supplies and other items (scotch tape, etc.) are under the sink. That is also where the 6 gallon water heater resides.
If you want to close windows, please be careful of the kitchen window over sink. It is held up with two thin pieces of wood that are painted white, with two metal hooks that can be used as handles. The window will close hard if those sticks are pulled out, so do be careful!
The propane heater in the main room is self-use. Please find instructions for turning it on should you have a chilly day or two, in the rental information booklet and also inside the door of the heater, located on the left side of the heater. It is thermostatically controlled, so the heater (propane flame on artificial logs) will go on and off once you turn it on. Do NOT place anything flammable on or near the heater while it is in use.
The small bathroom does not have a separate sink because of space. We have installed within the walk-in shower, a tub-like faucet and spigots that can be used to wash hands or brush teeth. There is also a large double sink in the kitchen just a few feet away. The toilet is an average height, standard toilet. If you have any physical difficulties because of injury, disability, or age, this might not be the rental for you. The house is not handicap accessible.
Please also note that you are expected, as stated in the manual in the house, to leave the house the way you found it. We supply cleaning items, mop, broom, sweeper, vacuum, etc. If our caretakers must spend extra time cleaning up after you, a claim will necessarily be submitted to airbnb for additional $ to come from your deposit.
Be sure to ask questions before you book. Things that are important to you should be considered, as not every rental is suitable for every visitor. Our visitors over the past 16 years have tended to be relaxed, unassuming folks, like us. While our caretakers are nearby, they may not be readily available on a moment's notice, but they will respond to any problems you may encounter as timely as possible. Once you have rented the cottage, you can arrive and depart any time within your rental week. If you must arrive later than your arrival date, or leave early, that is fine. We will appreciate a quick text message if that happens.
There is no TV in our house, but our grandkids have been known to bring movies on DVD and play them on a laptop computer. There is a radio/CD player, and there are many books, puzzles and games for your enjoyment. If you are bringing pets, please be sure they have had a recent bath and flea control treatment. When cleaning up before your departure, please be sure dog hair is not on floors or furnishings. We are dog lovers too, but some people aren't.
$200 security deposit required through airbnb, pets OK with $50 additional weekly fee, which is not payable through airbnb. Maine state sales tax of 9% will be charged by airbnb and paid by them. Renters must leave the house in the condition in which they found it on arrival: neat and tidy. If you do not find it that way when you arrive, please notify the owners ((PHONE NUMBER HIDDEN) call or text). Our caretakers only take care of things that are overlooked by renters; however, if they find that the house is not clean and they must spend extra time vacuuming dog hair, for example, or cleaning the stove or refrigerator, counters and floors, a claim will be submitted by us to airbnb for additional $ to pay the caretakers.
