What a wonderful few days we spent with Michele 'the don' ! My 10 year old boy and myself could not have been made to feel more at home in the warm company and home of Michele and Filomena. Long meals around the kitchen table, a casual tour of the village and its beautiful churches and warm greetings from all the villagers in this sleepy paradise up in the hills made for the most memorable slice of our stay in Italy (for a Swedish friend's marriage to a local lass in the nearby cathedral). Michele is a wealth of local knowledge and i will always smile at the memory of being greeted in the morning with 'what do you cheeky buggers feel like for breakfast'! (he spent 20+ yrs in Perth, WA!). The cave chapel that the village is named after is remarkable and should not be missed....also the only bar (which doubles as town hall, concert venue etc. decorated with Roman-period swords, spears and armour made by the guy who made all the pieces for the film 'Gladiator'. Play cards with the old boys if your Italian and brain is up to learning new tricks or just take a cold beer in the cavern. Who would ever choose a hotel....? Not us. X

Thank you Joe for mutually looking after each other ... Michele really enjoyed having you and your boy as our guests. He spent 29 years in Perth and has friends all over the world. There is another bar at the Pro Loco near the Post Office. August brings in the crowd from overseas especially from USA, Canada and Australia and Switzerland ... there is going to be dining and wining and dancing in the town squares soon, especially from 10th August culminating on the 16th with La Serata al Borgo in Via Roma which was the corridor to the Castle. You will miss an 8 course meal for a small price all organized by the Longobardo Cultural Club. I wonder which stall my husband will man this year! Playing cards helps to exercise the mind!! Did Michele take your son on the 3-Wheeler? Ciao belli!! xox

I lived in Sant'Angelo in Grotte for over 6 years in the region that I love: Molise. Sant'Angelo has a history over 1100 yo, the Crypt under the church of San Pietro in Vinculis with paintings representing the 7 Works of Corporal Mercy, dates back to the late XIII century. During that time we traveled to other regions of Italy but mostly tried to discover our own territory and found that we preferred to stay in small family run B&Bs!! Unexpected pilgrims encouraged us to turn our home in a B&B when we gave them shelter ... the idea is slowly becoming reality as we welcome other pilgrims in our home and promote the family run businesses in the area. Most of the pilgrims/guests are surprised at the lifestyle in Molise ... some have called it: the "undiscovered Tuscany" and comment on the friendly people and the pristine beauty and fresh air of our town and surrounding areas. I love to hear their stories and share ours.
