This Machiya is called "Juichi" – means the number 11, refers to the 11 headed Bodhisattva of compassion –Kannon, which a national treasure statue of her is enshrined in the near by temple Rokuharamitsuji.
The house is located in a neighborhood where secular and religious are interweaving into a fascinating puzzle. Rich in culture and history, from the dancing saint Kuya to the palaces of the Taira and Minamoto- The strongest Samurai families of the time ( 12th century). It is the ground of one of the most known episodes of Japanese history, the battle between the Taira and the Minamoto which is still a very popular story in many Noh, Kabuki plays as well Japanese TV dramas to the present day.
The neighborhood around the house is very active and welcoming. It offers a great deal of insight into the every day life of the people in an area less known to visitors. This ensures a very local experience “out of the beaten tracks”, yet in the middle of town. It is a great base for experiencing local daily life which yet living the tradition and heritage of the area through many temples Shrines and local spots.

There is railway stn & 24hr convenience stores, big local supermarket within 10 mins walk and variety of restaurants, cafes around, while the house remains perfectly quite and secluded! It is short walking distance to the lovely area of Kiyomizu area with Ninen Zaka and Sanen Zaka streets the picturesque streets against the backdrop of the eastern mountains As well a short walking distance to 2Geisha quarters( Gion and Miyagawacho) and down town Kyoto.

Inside the House
The structure of the house allowed us to create 3 completely separate bed rooms for complete privacy in case you come with other friends..
The house has 2 floors.
Floor 1 with entrance space, dining room, TV(only Japanese program) and relaxation space, fully equipped kitchen, Hollywood TWN beds, Western style toilet and iron cast bathroom, washing space and washing laundry space.
Floor 2 2 Japanese style (tatami) bed rooms & relaxation space, balcony
The house is furnished with Japanese antiques but also with brand new modern features like a western toilet, shower, air-conditioning, and microwave. We also provide a hairdryer and iron. The kitchen has a refrigerator, microwave, coffee maker, kettle, toaster and is perfect for preparing breakfast. Lunch and dinner are best eaten in local cafes and restaurants.
There is free WIFI.
Ju-Ichi-An is a NON Smoking property. No daily cleaning is offered.
- There is absolutely NO SMOKING ALLOWED in the house or outside near the house. If you are smoking, please step out to the main road and smoke quietly there. Please be responsible for disposing your cigarette and DO NOT LITTER. Please do NOT leave garbage outside the house at any time. If you need garbage disposed, please leave them near the front door (inside) the house and email us for a pick up service by 15:00PM. Please note that there are no car parking or bicycle parking space in this house. If you are coming by car or have rented a bicycle, we kindly ask that you use the closest public coin parking nearby. CHECK IN TIME is from 15:00PM-20:00PM. Please talk to us first if you plan on arriving later or earlier. CHECK OUT is by 10:00AM sharp.
-Please note that there will be an extra person charge of 3,000JPY for every **extra futon/bed** used during a guest’s stay.

They are hidden gems waiting to be explored and experienced. Staying at a Machiya provides an opportunity to connect in a subtle yet very vivid way to the deep traditions of Kyoto; a city that can be described as an island of tradition in the swirling whirlpool of ongoing change and evolution.
All our Machiya are located in the heart of the city but off a quiet side street which ensuring a quiet relaxing surrounding, yet allowing immediate access to major Kyoto’s historical district.
Here is the list of our Machiyas. Some of them are really close to each other suitable for large groups.
