Le logement
You come in through a private front door and down into its calm spacious interiors and if space and luxury in the heart of historic Penzance is what you are after, then Hypatia Apartment will certainly fit the bill.

LOCATION: Located in the famous Chapel Street, right in the heart of the oldest part of Penzance, The Hypatia Apartment is a short stroll to the harbour and seafront. The best local shops, galleries, bars, pubs and restaurants are right on your doorstep. The oldest pub in Penzance, The Turks Head, dating from 1233, is one hundred metres down the street. Have a drink or a meal here and you’ll be stepping back in history, enjoying the same public house as pirates and smugglers did 750 years ago.
Penzance is the gateway to the Land’s End peninsula and in the far west of Cornwall nothing is far away. The fishing harbour of Newlyn is 20 minutes walk along the seafront promenade, and the quaint village of Mousehole is only a 10 minutes’ drive away. Marazion, with the famous St. Michael’s Mount, is easy to walk or drive to. St. Ives is easily reached using the scenic rail line from Penzance station. Sennen Cove, The Minack Theatre in Porthcurno, and The Cornish Mining World Heritage Site on the north coast, are all an easy drive away. Many film locations of Winston Graham’s Poldark books are in the area and part of the German TV Rosamunde Pilcher series was filmed right outside the door in Chapel Street.

HISTORY
Hypatia Apartment is situated in The Regent, which dates back more than 400 years and it is one of the oldest buildings in Penzance. It would have been one of the beautiful houses on Lady Street (now Chapel Street), first admired and then destroyed and burned in the Spanish sacking of Penzance in 1595. Subsequently it was rebuilt as a fine residence, to which a new frontage in the Palladian-style was added in the second half of the 18th century on the Chapel Street side of the building. The original frontage of the building had been in Custom House Lane, off Chapel Street, to the right of The Regent, you can still see where the original entrance was which is now a Palladian-style window. Custom House Lane was originally designated as the New Street Slip, running parallel to the Abbey Slip at the next left turning from the apartment by The Admiral Benbow pub.

The earliest known owners (1707) were the families of Buller of Devon and Shillingham of Cornwall. It was the Batten family home (merchants in timber and coal) for the majority of the 19th century until it was sold in 1861 to Mr John Coulson, another Penzance merchant and property owner living on the same street. Latterly it became Perrow’s Temperance Hotel and a staging post, before having a large number of commercial and residential uses in the 20th century.

The self-contained apartment is half of the floor of the building owned by The Hypatia Trust. The Trust’s offices are next door and all the income from renting this lovely apartment goes to help support the charity. Their work supports and promotes women’s achievements through research and documentation, exhibition, publication, and by providing training and educational activities. Do have a look at their website at http://hypatia-trust.org.uk/ to find out more.

My name is Seb and together with assistance from Paola we run The Cornish Way, a small local holiday agency looking after a fine collection of lovely cottages for their owners. We are based in St Just, the UNESCO World Heritage Site and old mining town that retains so much of its original character and charm. Right on the edge of the beautiful coastline in the far west of Cornwall, we work from an old miner’s cottage with the assistance of my trusted office dog Otto. After coming down from London for an extended break 10 years ago I fell in love with this beautiful area and never left! Paola grew up near Penzance where she still lives and is a font of local knowledge. Always get in touch and we are usually on hand to help with your stay even if it's just a tip for a good local pub or beach!
