Number 42 is situated in the heart of Stromness within an iconic grade B listed stone building, known locally as "The Speedings." Its location in a quiet part of the street makes it very accessible - literally 1-2 minutes walk from the ferry terminal, bus station, pubs and shops. Ideal for guests who are travelling without cars but also perfect if you are driving, with short- term on-street parking right outside the front door and free long term parking at the back.

Le logement
Laid out over 3 floors this is an unusual space but all areas are roomy, light and airy. The bathroom is situated right alongside the bedroom on the top floor with a living room in the middle (street level, John Street) and the kitchen/dining room on the lower level which also benefits from a (back) door. The house is well equipped, comfortable and cosy and has lovely street and harbour views. We think you'll be charmed by all it has to offer.

Stromness is Orkney’s second town. Its character has changed little in the last few hundred years being sandwiched between the sea and Brinkies Brae – the granite hill under which the town nestles. There is one main street which winds through the middle of the town, widening and narrowing seemingly as it pleases and, amazingly, still operating a two-way traffic system. The street changes names as it meanders through the town: Alfred street, Dundas street, Graham Place, Victoria Street, John Street…. All intersected by narrow closes and alleys along the way. The Speedings was an important and historic building in the town, being the home of our Lord Lieutenant, James Robertson. When it was built, the sea lapped at its foundations and boats were hauled into the sheds below before some notable land reclamation and the building of “Ferry Road.” There are several shops in the town and you can purchase freshly baked bread, fishing tackle and diving accessories amongst many other things. There are four bars and golf club with several cafes and licensed restaurants. The harbour is a busy working one, with fishermen, divers, salmon boats and a strong marine renewables presence.
