We keep the cupboards well stocked in herbs and spices and have a dish, pan or bowl for pretty much anything!

Où se situe le logement

Varenguebec, Normandie, France

Location: Varenguebec is a small village on the Contentin peninsula of Normandy. The nearest town, La Haye Du Puits is a 10 minute drive from the house. There is a bustling market here on a Wednesday, three supermarkets, several cafes, bars and restaurants, at least four bakers and three butchers.
Beaches: The endless sandy beaches of the West coast of the Contentin are all a short drive away. These beaches are great for swimming as the sea stays shallow with a sandy bottom for quite a way. The sand dunes are great fun to play in. All beaches are dog friendly but dogs must be on leads during the summer. Some beaches have opportunities for beach sports such as kayking, sailing, horse riding, kite and wind buggies.
Pretty villages: Portbail is a beautiful little arty coastal town with a busy market and sea-side restaurants. Barneville-Carteret is a great place to pose with an ice cream and watch the yachts come in.
Specatular scenary: The coast heading up to La Hague boasts some stunning scenery and spectacular views.
D-Day: La Ratellerie is also a great base for exploring the D-Day beaches and musuems. The Airborne museum in Sainte Maire Eglise is a 20 minute drive from the house and a super place to begin to explore and understand the history of the area. A great museum for kids and adults alike. We can recommend a D-Day tour guide on request.
Famous sites: Mont Saint Michel is within a 90 minute drive and Bayeux, home of the Bayeux tapestry, just a 45 minute drive away.
Traditional Normandy: We love to visit Granville, a medieval walled city, to sample the crepes and visit the Dior museum. In the summer we enjoy catching the boat here for a day trip to the Isles de Chaussey.
A gourmet's paradise: Fresh local produce is found in abundance. Sea food, especially oysters and mussels, can be purchased fresh from the sea each day. Camembert is the local cheese and if you're really interested, you can visit the local Reo Camembert factory. The Cider and Calvados really does taste better when you buy it direct from the farm. For those with a sweet tooth you can visit the local caramel factory for a tour and tasting session. Salt marsh lamb can be bought at the right time of year from the local excellent butcher and many local farms sell meat directly from their farms.
Walking: There is a coastal path which you can access from most beaches and you can download a handy app from the tourist office which helps you to navigate this.
Cylcing: Road cycling is very popular. There is also a long cycle path that runs through La Haye Du Puits which is a disused railway track. You can cycle all the way to Mont Saint Michel if you like! If you do bring bikes it's a leisurely and very pretty cycle into La Haye Du Puits.
Horse riding: There are several local outfits who can arrange horse rides for you. Some arrange rides on the beach. Others provide a horse or donkey and trap for a family outing and picnic.
Running: If you feel the need to run off some of that Camembert, there are lots of nice running routes from the house that take you round the lanes and are mostly flat.
