Le logement

Originally and comfortably - moulder still and generously. A dream under thatches roof.

The affectionately restored Reetdachkate (thatched roof) from 1860 belongs to the nicest buildings in the western part of the place Süderstapel, its picture is marked by an ensemble of historical buildings.

On generous 300 sqm of living space in our 150 year old "Eider Cottage" nearby the Eider river there is plenty of space to play and relax. With two combined apartments for up to 16 guests, you have many options for your stay.

The center of the ground floor apartment is the spacious hallway with a large dining table for up to 12 people. The adjacent kitchen is of course fully equipped. On colder days a fireplace spread warmth in the living room. Three bedrooms can accommodate a total of 6 people. In the living room there is a spacious sofa bed for two additional guests. A full bathroom with old English bath furniture and underfloor heating adjoins the master bedroom. A further shower room is next to the bedroom in the old barn.

Accès des voyageurs

Linen and towels (towels and sheets) can be rented for € 10 per set.
Parking for two to three vehicles in front of the house.

Le quartier

The health area Süderstapel has 1047 inhabitants and is situated directly at the Eider river in Schleswig-Holstein, about 18 km south-east of Husum and 9 km from the famous Dutch town of Friedrichstadt.
Süderstapel is located at the southernmost edge of the Stapelholmer Geest back. In the beautiful region of the three rivers "Eider-Treene-Sorge" you can do extensive bicycle and boat tours.

The mile-long dream beach of St. Peter-Ording is reached in 45 minutes. And also for fans of the Island Sylt Süderstapel is an appropriate starting point: With the hourly departing Nordostseebahn from Friedrichstadt you are in just over an hour in Westerland.

Vi fik tilsendt info vedr. lejestart i god tid. Huset ligger i en stille by med indkøbsmulighed. Meget idylisk

The house in Süderstapel is a dream -- once we had figured things out. The host, Maren, who lives in Hamburg, was responsive and friendly, but communicated mostly via sms. When, on the first night we told her the heating was down, she had a neighbor fix it within minutes. Unfortunately, small detals plauged our stay and brought down what could easily have been a perfect experience. We arrived at on short notice at 4pm for a first night in a cold house -- and no heat in the owens. It was freezing with 2 degrees C outside and strong winds. Upon arrival we noticed that the beds were not made, and discovered, upon rereading the description on ABNB that bedlinens and towels would cost us 10 EUR extra per person (this inconvenient fact was buried deep in the description -- we did not notice during booking, only upon rereading). The kitchen was well equipped but lacked basic kitchen ingredients like salt, pepper, spices, oliveoil, vinegar, garbage bags and detergent for the dishwasher -- small details, but inconvenient when staying for four nights like we did. The house also had limited supplies of toiletpaper, had no shampoo or soap and no instructions as to where to shop for groceries, how to operate any house machinery or any form of welcome which we have learned to expect from previous ABNB stays. We consider ourselves quite savvy when it comes to renting apartments and houses through ABNB, having used their services several times in the US and Scandinavia. The house and its location is top-notch and worth the extra cost. It might be common to bring your own linen in Germany (as we were told by Maren), but it is not common in Scandinavia or in the US. When renting out to non-native German speakers like us, it would be extremely helpful to find a physical good old user manual -- in English -- that explains how everything works, provides the password to the network, explain the coffee machine etc. give directions to the nearest grocery store, suggested places to visit etc. (One small detail: they don´t accept anything but local bank-cards at the local Lidl grocery store. In Germany, cash is still king). But all in all, Maren has a wonderful place -- tasteful, practical and warm. A little more effort to make us feel welcome would have turned us into regulars, and if you are aware of these small shortcomings, the house is fantastic. Anyway: The house is nice and warm and the location is great. The host would benefit from being more welcoming. But there is a grocerystore 15 minutes away by car. That makes up for a lot. Just bring cash.

Thank you, Carl, for your detailed comment. We are really happy that you enjoyed your stay at the Eider Cottage although you faced some issues and the weather was typically "norddeutsch". Just a few words on your comment: The biggest challenge for us was that you booked at really short notice. There were only a few hours between your first contact and arrival. As we do not live in the Eider Cottage we have to organize most things on remote. The cleaning team was schedued for the next day, so we were really lucky that they had an earlier slot available for providing you a clean house on arrival. Unfortunately they did not check the heating system and the kitchen equipment in the base apartment. The last group booked the entire house and obviously carried all kitchen basics to the upper apartment. We are terribly sorry for that and we fully agree that this is a MUST. But you could have called us to find a simple solution - as we did in case of the heating system. You have seen that we react within seconds and are doing the best we can to fix any problem at shortest notice - even on remote and with the assistance of our fantastic neighbors. Same with towels and linen: we immediately provided you access to our washing room to get yourself some sets. As the Eider Cottage is not a city apartment but a country house for vacation, it is quite common in Germany (and even in Denmark for instance) that guests bring their own linen and towels. Unfortunately there is no way at Airbnb to add this information to the price section - that's why we posted the extra costs very prominent into the "House Rules". Our guest find a physical guest book at the entrance of the Eider Cottage, which provides all useful information, including lists of supermarkets, restaurants, Wi-Fi password, where to find user manuals, how to operate the heating system, the chimney, etc. Unfortunately it is only in German, but we will write an English version immediately – promised!
