Some advice for the travelling in Cinque Terre:
You can buy single train tickets for around 2.70. This will get you to one village. Then you'd have to buy another 2.70 ticket to get to the next one etc. But for 4 euros you can buy a ticket which lasts six hours and allows you to travel one way getting on and off the train as many times as you like. This ticket is perfect to see all the villages! You have to buy another ticket for the return journey.
Make sure you validate your ticket BEFORE you get on the train. You have to put it into a machine at the train station before boarding which will stamp the date/time on it. Then once on the train the conductor will check the ticket. If you don't validate it you can be fined. They don't explain the process when you buy the ticket and I ended up not knowing I had to validate it before I got on the train and was fined (5 euros if you tell them you haven't validated it; 50 euros if you don't tell them). I wonder if it is simply a way to make money from unsuspecting make sure you validate BEFORE getting on the train!
Another tip: for buying bus tickets if you want to see more of the surrounding area they are much cheaper if you purchase them at tobacco stores BEFORE getting on the bus. If you purchase a ticket on the bus expect to pay 40-50% more. Porto Venere is a great place to visit by bus if you have time!
