Description

Cozy, two-bedroom loft cabin with wood stove. Just minutes away from China Beach and the Juan de Fuca trail.

A haven away from a fast-paced, noisy world, our sleepy cabin comfortably fits four (queen and double bed), with a futon for additional sleepers. (Two kids easily fit on the futon, two adults might be a squeeze!) It's a bright space with lots of natural light and warm organic finishing throughout, including woodwork from reclaimed wood from city buildings from Victoria B.C. The kitchen is well stocked for cooking at home, with a wood stove for warmth on chilly evenings.

Sleeps: 5-6

Books: Lots!
DVDs: Shandell's collection: Mostly sci-fi and vampire stuff. Things with explosions. Neil's collection: Documentaries. Movies that make people sad.

Dogs: Negotiable under strict terms. We love dogs but want to make sure that everyone -- you, your (usually) four-legged companions, and our neighbours -- remain happy and safe.

Surfers: As an extra bonus, located outside there's a hot water faucet for rinsing wet suits and boards.

Expect a relaxing stay and great sleep in our cozy loft house located in a private forest near the ocean.

Finally, we try to make your stay as low environmental impact as possibly and provide as many sustainable products as possible (recycled toilet paper, biodegradable soaps, biodegradable garbage bags, organic cooking supplies etc.). We ask that you help us out with this and please properly separate your garbage and do not throw anything out that is clearly recyclable compostable.

Guests will enjoy a private coastal experience, but will have contact information easily at hand if there are any questions or concerns.

Just a 10 minute walk to the beach and 5 minute walk to the beginning of the Juan de Fuca trail, the house is located in a quiet, thickly wooded neighborhood with little traffic or noise. For the most part at night you will only hear the crackle of the fire and the wind in the trees if you leave the windows open, though in the winter and spring the creek that runs across the back of the property can be quite impressively loud.

Though the house itself does not have cell phone coverage, just a fifteen minute drive towards Sooke is Shirley Delicious, a delightful cafe that serves excellent coffee, a wide variety of treats, soups, sandwiches and breakfast fixins, as well as offering internet service (vegan and gluten free options). There's often cell coverage there too, so it's an excellent option to connect to the world. Just down in Jordan River, The Cold Shoulder cafe also serves great coffee and snacks.

For a romantic evening, the nearby Point No Point also offers dinner (and lunch), though be sure to make reservations.

Note: Be sure to pick up any food or other supplies needed before passing through Sooke as there are no grocery stores or gas stations in Jordan River.

In addition to the Juan de Fuca and China Beach, there are numerous nearby beaches with differing levels of access. The beach at Jordan River is very easy access (you can drive right to it), and for a bit more of an adventure, head to Sombrio, about a half hour drive past Jordan River; if you are lucky you may see killer whales, humpbacks or seals.

Jordan River is remote and a personal vehicle is necessary.

Power outages are common during the storm season (November - February). In case of an outage there are two large jugs of water stored by the washer and dryer. First Aid kit, flashlights, and candles are kept in a basket on the fridge. While an outage can be inconvenient it's an excellent excuse to make grilled cheese sandwiches in the cast iron pans on the wood stove.

In our effort to make your stay as low environmental impact as possible we ask that you properly separate your garbage and do not throw anything in the garbage that is clearly recyclable or compostable.
Recyclables: please bring your recyclables to the shed by the gate and separate the items according to the provided containers.
Compostables: please separate all your compostable items (fruit and vegetable waste and compostable packaging) and put them in the beige compost bin. If the beige bin gets full you can dispose of it just down the hill at the main black composting bin. The garbage exchange in Sooke will not take garbage with recycleables and compostable food waste in it, so we will have to pass the charge along to you if alternate disposal are necessary due to improper separation.
