More about the O2

Nothing stands between your five-star luxury, wool-insulated glamping experience and your access to Fiordland National Park, The O2 Yurt is built on your private hillside above the shores of pristine Lake Te Anau, the largest body of water in New Zealand, and within a short stroll to the start of the Kepler Track, one of New Zealand's "great walks".

“The air is so clean here. I discovered the joy of breathing... and slept the deepest sleep imaginable.”

"This space is a whole new world. A magical, romantic and restorative experience."

O2 = oxygen for you.

The O2 Yurt is the opposite of city living. Zero air pollution. Zero light pollution. Maximum space. Maximum views of National Park wilderness.

Accessible from your own private drive leading to your own private meadow, The O2 Yurt sits proudly, in seclusion, on one of the most valuable pieces of real estate in Fiordland with million-dollar, unimpeded views. Feast your eyes on soaring mountains, the largest lake in New Zealand and glittering stars. Open your lungs and breathe in, capturing some of the cleanest air in the world; Fiordland air.

O2 = optimum luxury for two of you.

The O2 Yurt is not like any other accommodation in Fiordland or Te Anau. It is not a hotel room nor a standard Airbnb holiday house or room. It is not part of a campsite. The O2 Yurt is a brand-new, five-star, six metre diameter, wool-insulated, air-conditioned, designer yurt (circular wooden and canvas building with high ceiling) with ensuite, Italian bathroom, positioned on an expansive decking with outdoor bath with hot water on tap - perfect for bathing under the stars, sunshine, or even in the rain.

The yurt itself provides everything you would expect from grand-design, five-star accommodation including USB ports and WiFi.

The O2 Yurt is furnished with a solid wooden floor, electric mood lighting, a dining area, hand-crafted king-size bed, art and sculptures, high-quality French linen sheets and an Italian bathroom. There is even a safe for your valuables.

Your designer bathroom will meet all your five-star expectations, including power shower and flushing toilet, luxury bathing products, fluffy bathrobes and towels. It is immediately next to the yurt, connected by your private decking.

Your private, large decking includes your own sunken fireplace, outdoor bath and a plentiful supply of wood. Soak in the tub or sit on cushions around the fire and gaze at probably the best view in the world, watching the stars of the Milky Way twinkle above you.

O2 = only you two.

The O2 Yurt is built as an adult, luxury retreat for two people or one person. We are not suitable for families but can accommodate babies that are not yet crawling and can provide you with a modern travel cot if required.

O2 = warm air or cool air.

Many people associate canvas with cold. We guarantee your warmth, any season of the year and can keep you cool in summer. The O2 Yurt is always the perfect temperature for you. It has 'flick of a switch' electric air conditioning to heat or cool to your desired heat. The yurt also has thick New Zealand wool insulation.

Connected

The O2 Yurt is connected with its own dedicated WiFi. Be connected whenever you want; although you are more likely to just stare at the view. Welcome to paradise.

Gourmet food for you

Breakfast
Enjoy your complimentary luxury breakfast of local, fairtrade and organic produce in your yurt or on your decking, including organic eggs, laid just 500 metres away.

Dinner
For your evening meal, the O2 yurt comes with a top-of-the-range barbecue facility with very easy instructions and we strongly recommend you use it. When you book, let us know if you would like us to stock your fridge and larder with ingredients for an easy-to-cook gourmet two-course meal, including a matching New Zealand wine, beer or non-alcoholic drinks if you wish, for any evening or evenings of your stay. Cost varies according to the season but you will find this option more reasonable than eating in a restaurant. (If you are meat-eaters, we can sometimes provide wild venison steaks from Fiordland. Vegetarian and vegan options also available.) Alternately, bring your own ingredients and drinks.

(O2 guests invariably choose to stay at O2 for their evenings. However, if you would prefer to eat in Te Anau, there are several good quality restaurants to choose from.)

Location

The O2 Yurt is a very short distance by foot, bicycle or car to the entrance to Fiordland National Park (it is one of the closest dwellings) and the start of one of New Zealand's 'great walks' (the Kepler Track). The entrance to the Park is by foot bridge over the mighty Waiau River, which features in the Lord of the Rings movie as the River Anduin. Unsurprisingly, nearby are several other film locations from the movie that you can walk, cycle or drive to.

The only thing that stands between you and the edge of Lake Te Anau and Fiordland National Park (where there are no houses) is our jaw-dropping, beautiful golf course; surely the most beautiful, welcoming and often-empty 18-hole course in the world. And yes, they welcome visitor players.

The O2 Yurt is a five-minute drive from Te Anau township (the only town close to the Fiordland National Park). Te Anau is a small and beautiful town (not visible from the yurt). It has everything you may need, including two supermarkets, a pharmacy, doctor's surgery, hairdressers, bars and restaurants. There is even a wonderful cinema.

We offer use of two mountain bikes and helmets, free of charge, if you wish to get about by bicycle. We are very close to a brand-new, off-road cycle path that takes you to everywhere you might like to go; the amazing Lake Te Anau, Te Anau township, Fiordland National Park and the Waiau River.

Living in a meadow means space to land a helicopter. We can arrange for a helicopter to land directly outside the front door of The O2 Yurt and transport you to wilderness peaks and valleys. For a less expensive option, you can pick up a helicopter from Te Anau airport (more of a field than an airport and there are no large planes that land there). It is a fifteen minute drive away.

Getting here

The nearest international airport is Queenstown, a two-hour bus or car drive away.

If you have chosen to be car-free, it is easy to hop on a bus from the airport to get here (book online with providers Intercity or Tracknet). We can pick you up and drop you off at the bus stop in Te Anau, and arrange all your transport needs while in Fiordland too.

If you are arriving by car, we send you instructions on how to access your private drive from Te Anau. There is secure parking for you immediately behind The O2 Yurt.

Privacy and help organising your time in Fiordland

We offer a hands-off, or hands-on service.

Hands-off: Access to O2 is by private drive so you have no need to see your hosts, Andrew and Mary (although we are on hand nearby if you need us). If you want total solitude, you have it.

Hands-on: We can be available to you at any time to arrange all of your tourist needs in Fiordland, from cruising or kayaking in Milford Sound to helicopter flights to nature walks to multi-day hiking trips. Message through Airbnb or call us on the private lines we give you and we will spring into action.

Things to do directly from the yurt

Planning to cruise or kayak the Sounds?
The O2 Yurt is the perfect launch pad for our fabulous fiords, Milford Sound or Doubtful Sound. A trip to either is a trip of a lifetime, either cruising on a boat or paddling in a kayak. Staying at The O2 Yurt means you are a lot closer to the fiords than staying in Queenstown. We can arrange your fiord visit or simply search online for Fiordland boat cruises or kayaking trips.

A few things you can do directly from The O2 Yurt by foot or bicycle:

Last chance to see:
You can stroll or cycle around Lake Te Anau on our beautiful off-road cycle and walking track to Te Anau's free bird park and view the Takahe (one of the rarest birds in the world that only lives in the mountains in front of The O2 Yurt). It is an amazing large blue bird that cannot fly, and there are only about 400 left in the world.

Get on your bike:
You have exclusive access to two adjustable-height mountain bikes, and helmets, to cycle in two directions on our amazing new cycle trail. In one direction you cycle around Lake Te Anau into Te Anau township (and past the bird park), and in the other direction you cycle down a Lord of the Rings river (the Waiau) next to Fiordland wilderness.

Walk or jog in Fiordland National Park:
There are fabulous running and walking tracks in the National Park, of any length you need, which you can walk and jog to straight from The O2 Yurt (or alternately drive two minutes to the Fiordland National Park car park).

Take to the skies:
We can arrange for a helicopter to pick you up from your meadow. You literally walk out the door of your yurt and into a helicopter that can take you up to the highest peaks and most beautiful valleys of Fiordland National Park. We can arrange this for you before, or on, arrival. Or, for a cheaper option, you can drive to nearby Te Anau airport and pick up your helicopter from there.

Fishing:
There are several providers of river fishing trips. We can arrange your trip.

Golf:
Golf lovers take note; you can walk out your yurt and onto the 18-hole challenging par 72 golf course in just three minutes. (Visitors welcomed by the club.)

Planning to do a multi-day walk (known in New Zealand as tramping)?
If you are planning to walk the Kepler Track or any other of the Great Walks near us (Routeburn, Milford, Hollyford, etc) we can give you tramping advice including helping you rent your equipment. One of your hosts, Mary, is a mountain guide. If you have a car but don't want to leave it in a trailhead carpark for several days, we can also transport you, or arrange your transport, to the start of the walks, and arrange for you to securely park your car with us for several days.

Stay for a night, or stay for longer to soak up Fiordland

We are happy to have you just for one night. Many of our guests come here as their launch pad for getting to Milford Sound and have found it a perfect one-night base. However, if you are considering staying for longer, then even better! Many of our one-night-only guests have told us they wished they had booked for two nights. This is a place to slow down for a while and there is so much to do in Fiordland!

Leave your belongings securely with us
There is a safe in O2. You can also leave your belongings with us if you arrive earlier than the check-in time, and leave them with us if you are returning after several days (for example, if you are going on a multi-day walk). We have a lockbox for your valuables. We also have plenty of parking space.

About your hosts
Andrew and Mary are in love with Fiordland. Mary loves the mountains (she is a part-time mountain guide) and Andrew loves the rivers and fiords (he is a part-time kayak guide) and together, with our children Arlo and Martha, we love it all. We also love yurts. We have spent many years talking to people about the wonders of yurt living, and while we do admittedly live in a house, we spend nights under canvas whenever we can.

One day we sat down in our amazing meadow, gazed at the view in wonder and decided to share it with you. We are excited to welcome you to The O2 Yurt and your extraordinary stay in paradise. Welcome to the beauty of Fiordland and five-star yurt living.

Accès des voyageurs
Everything is yours to enjoy, in private, just for you two.

Autres remarques
You may occasionally spot us (or two other guests staying elsewhere) walking the dog through your paddock. This is for access purposes only and we will not disturb you.

Looking for something to do, there is plenty!
Last chance to see: You can stroll around the lake to our free bird park and view the Takahe (one of the rarest birds in the world that only lives in the mountains opposite O2). It is an amazing large blue bird that cannot fly, and there are only about 240 left!

Use O2 as a launch pad for getting to Milford Sound. Many who have booked our other yurt wished they had booked for longer... please think about booking two or three nights rather than rushing away (although we do understand there is a lot to see in New Zealand!) O2 is a place to slow down for a while.
If you have your own car we are easy to find and are a five minute drive from central Te Anau, but a world away from Te Anau suburbia. We send directions on booking.
If you do not have a car we can arrange your pick up and drop off from the bus stops. We love to welcome visitors who have arrived by bus or bicycle.
If you are planning to walk the Kepler or any other of the Great Walks near us (Routeburn, Milford, Hollyford, etc) we can give you tramping advice or even rent you equipment. Mary is a mountain guide and Andrew is a kayak guide as well as a sculpture, so we can also give you kayaking advice and tips on visiting Milford sound.
You can leave your belongings with us while you are tramping and we have a lock box for your valuables. We also have plenty of parking space and can transport you, or arrange your transport, to the start of hiking trails if required so you don't have to leave your vehicle in public car parks for several days.
