Birr is a lovely heritage town with much to see and enjoy, and well worth visiting and staying for more than one night! Being in the 'Centre of the Universe' - in the heart of the country, tourists have used Brendan House and Tin Jug Studio as a special place to stay whilst visiting all in and around the town, and for further explorations in the region and beyond. Please see our website for information on Brendan House & Tin Jug Studio. Elegant and 'artsy' in the heart of Birr! We have a four-poster bedroom for two people and two single bedrooms with canopy beds in our Georgian townhouse. In the mornings, a delicious, healthy and hearty breakfast is served to the room or beside the drawing room fire. Our arts studio in the courtyard garden is available at certain times of the year to tourists and visitors, for semi-self-catering accommodation at very reasonable rates.
(Our full write-up here will follow in time!)

The antique four-poster room and the two single rooms are within the guest wing of the Georgian townhouse, with its 'tented' corridor, where there is a silver tray set for guests to make herbal tea at any time. The drawing room is also available to guests. Breakfasts are served in courses to the rooms but occasionally, served in our dining room. For people staying in the studio, the healthy Breakfast Basket is brought to the gallery.

As little, or more - just as guests prefer! The opportunity is for a very peaceful stay without need for too much chat if that is not wished for. Or, we can arrange for guided walks in the hills, and guided tours and transport to traditional music evenings or regional attractions by small bus...the choice is yours.
Birr has a charming theatre with a high standard of varied entertainments. Check out Birr Theatre & Arts Centre for the current programme. There is an assortment of arts festivals here, with a new one this year! The Birr Festival of Music & Voice will run from the 26th - 28th May. A superb programme will begin with Bruno Caproni (baritone) and Julian Evans (pianist). After this, Scripts, Ireland's Playwriting Festival runs from the 9th - 16th July; closely followed by the 50th Birr Vintage Week & Arts Festival in early August; the OFFline Film Festival in October and then Hullabaloo Children's Arts Festival. And as if that isn't enough for one small town, here at Tin Jug Studio the Irish Latin American Film Festival (Dublin and Birr) will have film screenings on the 2nd and 3rd May. (We hosted the Cuban Ambassador and his wife in 2014, for the launch of the Cuban themed film screenings that year.) During Seachtain na Gaeilge in March, we have various Irish language events and gatherings. Apart from the tranquil gardens of Birr Castle Demesne and fascinating Historic Science Centre, visitors can take a self-guided tour of the Famous & Notables of Birr Trail. Launched by the actor Des Keogh in 2016, there are 25 plaques on buildings and structures along this one of two town tours. The FAN Trail celebrates the remarkable people of past eras whose achievements and their significance locally, nationally and internationally, had mostly been lost in the mists of memory.
No smoking in the bedrooms or the studio, but in the house drawing room is fine - preferably cigars only!

An 'occasional' writer, artist/designer with an arts studio. I have lived and worked in England and New York but now very happily settled back in Ireland. (Just to mention, by way of some explanation on sometimes slow response, that I possess only an out of date laptop and no Smart Phone!) Rx
