Set in idyllic gardens among rolling green hills, within hearing distance of the Victoria Falls, Bongwe Camp with its rustic walk-in safari tents is an ideal getaway that offers guests the solitude and silence of a true bush retreat.

Just 15km outside the bustling Livingstone town, this quiet self-catering camp has beautiful gardens and a lovely swimming pool and is the perfect place to relax while listening to the unique sounds of Africa.

Le logement
Please note: Zambia is currently experiencing rather drastic load shedding. Due to the poor rains last year our main source of electricity, Kariba Dam, is at dangerously low levels. We are therefore having to endure electricity rationing until the dam fills up again. Bongwe camp is connected to a generator which provides enough power for the entire camp but it isn't run for the entirety of a 15 hour load shedding schedule. We will let you know when we will be running the generator and if you need power outside of our running times we will be more than happy to accommodate you. Hopefully we have a good rainy season this year! We apologise for the inconvenience.

The extensive grounds are fenced and safe to walk and explore, even during elephant season. The grounds offer a great view of the river valley and the towering plume of "smoke" from the Victoria Falls can be seen from the southern border fence. During high water the Falls can be heard throughout the day and night.

Located 1km from the lion and elephant sanctuary you can not only hear the lions roaring in the evening and early mornings, but you can also visit these big cats first hand should you wish (The sanctuary charges a fee to interact with lions and cheetah - please contact us to make a booking in advance).

If you like birding then the extensive trails and rolling hills surrounding Bongwe Camp will allow you to see a large array of species. The birding is also excellent around the garden and pool area.

The local village is a short walk away and excursions can easily be arranged or you can explore themselves (between Nov - Apr it is an easy walk (no elephants), for the rest of the year you will have to go by car/taxi to be on the safe side). Please contact us if you would like to book a tour in advance (a fee is payable to the local community).

If cycling is your thing then the village route also offers the shortest way back to town (6km) and the roads and tracks are unpaved and mostly used by donkey and carts. Its a fun and enjoyable place for a ride (bikes not provided but can be hired from a local operator. You can also bring your own).

Night time sees us far enough from the town to not hear the local bars and traffic which allows for the authentic sounds of the African night. The large open firepit is a great place to sit and stargaze while enjoying a cold beer or Gin and Tonic, perfect for a rustic BBQ (braai) or just a quiet thought or two.

For those that prefer to remain connected to the world at large we provide free Wi-Fi around the camp in communal places so you can continue to stay in touch with those not lucky enough to be with you. It isn't the speediest of connections due to our location, but is perfectly fine for browsing, social media and emails. We probably average about 1 to 2Mb/s.

Each of the 9 walk-in safari tents come with an en-suite bathroom that includes a hot shower, wash basin and flushing toilet. Each tent has eith two single beds or a double bed that come with sturdy mosquito nets.

There is amble wardrobe space as well as bedside tables and a bedside lamp. The tents also have a main light in the sleeping section as well as the bathroom. Fans are provided in each tent for when it is warm.

There is a communal kitchen and cooking area that also includes BBQ's, fridges and freezers. All utensils, plates, cups and glasses are also provided.

For those who prefer not to worry about cooking there is a chef available for daily hire who can look after your needs or we can include a complete meal package at additional reasonable rates. Please contact us for rates.

Please note that the gardens and swimming pool are shared with other guests . The camp is quiet and scattered around the grounds among the trees, far enough away from each other to not impose on your stay. Private parking bays are available behind most tents.

There is a daily maid service provided free of charge. She will clean the tent and wash the dishes each day. She can also provide a laundry and ironing service if you wish, but this will be an extra charge which you can negotiate with her at the time.

There is 24 hour security on site.

Accès des voyageurs
The entire 50 hectare grounds are fenced and guests can enjoy walking and exploring along any of the recognised paths and walkways available within the grounds. There are two access gates into the grounds depending on which way you choose to drive - the shorter village route or the scenic river route.

Guests will be provided with their own keys and can come and go as they please. Please lock the tent door after you if the maid is not still working within the tent. If she is, she will lock up after she has completed her cleaning.

Autres remarques
Bongwe Camp is best suited for self-driving guests who have their own vehicle or have hired a vehicle for their stay. That is not to discourage those without a car as there is a reliable taxi service that can service the camp.

The longer, easier drive to the camp is 15km from the center of town and follows a scenic route along the Zambezi River towards the Victoria Falls. It has some stunning views, especially when driving from the Villa down towards the river. One of the best best views of the Victoria Falls and the river and islands can be seen from this vantage point. There is often a rainbow over the falls in the mornings when the sun is at the right angle.

If you use the village route (high clearance cars only) then its a much shorter distance (6km) but takes the same amount of time and transverses through the villages. It is interesting and educational and shows rural life in Zambia.

If you are relying on taxis, then we have some friendly reliable ones who will charge $10 a car each way but are available day and night. They typically need 15 minutes notice .

Alternately bicycles can be hired from several vendors for those who would ike to tackle the 6km village route. Please contact us for details on bike hire.

Emplacement

Livingstone, Southern Province, Zambie

Alec’s place is located in Livingstone, Southern Province, Zambia.

Our neighborhood is wild and beautiful and completely private. You will not hear any vehicles, noisy bars or the hustle and bustle of Livingstone. Instead you will hear the sounds of the African bush including the roar of the local lions in the nearby sanctuary. Elephants will often be seen en-route to/from the villa during the months of May to October (ish).

Unlike many properties located closer to town, our property provides 50 hectares of African bush. There are trails and walkways that run throughout the property allowing for safe and quiet strolls, morning jogs, bike rides or birding.

During high water the constant roar of the Victoria Falls can be heard from the grounds throughout the day and night.

I am a safari man, through and through. Its my passion and my hobby and my livelihood. My career has seen me live and work in most of the best and wildest safari camps in the country. I moved to Livingstone because it has the perfect combination of great safari and wilderness as well as the beauty and history of the amazing Victoria falls. This has been a favourite destination for me often over the years. I like the little town, still rustic but also modern enough to cater good little restaurants and funky nightlife and its even more perfect because i live out of town and only have to visit when i want to. Living here is perfect for me, no noise and hustle, only idyllic and wild surroundings. The common sounds the abundant bird life and the sound of the Victoria falls in the background, clean air and the feeling of solitude available at any time, the gardens here make me feel like i live in the garden of Eden. I love a fireplace under the stars, especially with a cold beer and good company and have some great stories to add to the ambiance.
