Description

This private room in the heart of prestigious Cathedral Hill is quiet and sunny—a perfect place to rest in a uniquely decorated Victorian home. You have a private fridge, microwave, coffee maker and tea service, and the room has its own lock. The luxurious bath, kitchen and living room are shared. Grocers, cafes, drugstores, and coffeeshops are close by, as are major highways and downtown Saint Paul. Parking across the street in front of the house is ample and safe.

Besides some beautiful living plants, you have an in-room fridge and microwave and your own electric coffee maker in the next room. The house has forced-air gas heat and central air conditioning, and you also have a fan as well as control of the temperature in your room. The garden is truly superb, and the neighborhood is the very best for strolls. Walk four blocks to some of the finest restaurants in Saint Paul, or stop at the nearby deli. It's all close and all convenient.

Your private entrance leads upstairs and through an alarmed door to our residence. There's a third floor apartment at the second floor landing with its own locked door. The only spaces that are off limits are the bedrooms of the two residents. We share the bathroom on second floor and the half bath on first floor. There's limited space in the kitchen, so don't plan on a big cooking spree—a bit of light cooking is all right, though. You have your own fridge and microwave in the room, plus coffee makers upstairs and downstairs. There's an electric teapot and a wide variety of teas. You'll find fruit and, often, sweets on the kitchen table. These are shared because we know our guests like to have a little treat from time to time.

You'll be sharing the house with two women—both introverts. The living room, including media center, and the dining room are usually all yours. We mostly spend our time in the kitchen and sunroom. Background music is too distracting for me, so please use headphones. If public radio is too distracting for you, just say so and I'll turn it off.

Cathedral and Summit Hill: The only place I'd want to live in St. Paul. This was the neighborhood of the 19th century robber barons who built houses that make contemporary homes look puny. There's no better neighborhood for strolling and gaping. Restaurants surround us, and shopping is nearby and plentiful.

Bus service is 4 blocks away and so is the HourCar hub. The Green Line, rapid transit running between Minneapolis and St. Paul, is a mile away. The airport is a 10 minute drive, which will cost you about $30 by taxi. Uber is a bit cheaper. Parking across the street in front of the house is plentiful and, up til now, safe. Saint Paul has an extensive bus system, and bus stops are two to four blocks away. If you're driving, access to highways 35E, 494 and 94, the East-West highway between Minneapolis and Saint Paul, is simple and quick.

If you're here more than a week, feel free to use the second floor laundry and to cook light meals in the kitchen.

I'm a Ph.D. in language and literature who did extensive post-doc work in psychology, taught university level, founded a college counseling center, and wrote several books on writing. If that calls up an image of a hag with her head in a book you've got the wrong woman. My passions are gardening, grandchildrening (yes, it should be a word), art, beekeeping, and homemaking. I put up jars and jars of pickles and jams, indeed I do. The fact is, I bolted from academia long ago and started my own business, teaching writing in corporations all across the country, training trainers, writing books, making videos. My work won national awards. Enough, I say. Time to go dig in the garden and..by the way, nobody leaves this house without a zucchini, pickles, jam, or a jar of honey! Did I mention I have a feeding disorder? Or is it just that I'm a Mediterranean woman?
