A 300 year old Grade 2 listed Lakeland barn. Quiet location, private off street parking at the door, mountain views, central heating.
Large bedroom with kingsize bed, Egyptian bed linen, sofa, tv and it is now en-suite with a rain shower head!

Le logement

This is a quirky, c.300 year old building and is part of a group of buildings on the Ambleside Heritage Trail that are the oldest in the town. This was the first site to be settled in what is now Ambleside, over 1,000 years ago. It is constructed of Lakeland stone and is Grade 2 Listed. The bed and breakfast accommodation is situated up a spiral stone staircase on the first floor of the barn. The walls are 2 feet thick and the interior structure contains ships timbers salvaged from the Cumbrian coast. The newly enlarged en-suite bedroom has excellent views of Wansfell Pike.

Accès des voyageurs

Free on site private parking at the door, free Wi-Fi, kettle for tea/coffee making including sachets of tea, coffee & hot chocolate. TV with integral DVD player, Bose Wave radio/CD player, hair dryer and cool mat for hair straighteners.
Private en-suite bathroom with large shower enclosure and a rain shower head, wash hand basin, wc, heated towel rail and back lit mirror with shaver point.
Breakfast options are discussed the evening before and are fairly flexible. Breakfast is taken in the owners lounge, which has a wood burner and stunning views across the rooftops of Ambleside to the church and the fells across the valley.
If required, there is secure bicycle storage in our stone outbuilding.

If it's tranquillity you need with an idle setting Robin's place in Ambleside is a little magical gem full of old world charm and one or two historical treasures defining the surrounding environment and way to unwind on the many fell walks. You could probably describe us both as world travellers with more than a tale to tell about the quality of some hotels and the customer service. What we really enjoy and embrace about the AirBNB accommodation, you are made to feel at home by the hosts and no fuss (such as Robin) the personal touches really matter when you are enjoying quality time together. Yeah we recommend - absolutely! Pity about the weather over the weekend but that's the lakes for you. Oh dear when the rest of the country south of Kendal was basking in sunshine. Gordon and Sissi

Having read previous reviews I was expecting a welcoming host in a country cottage type environment with good amenities and that is exactly what we found. A few minutes walk to the centre of Ambleside makes it very convenient and the breakfast, cooked on demand at a time to suit you, was superb. Robin is a wonderful host with great local knowledge with details (and maps) on walks and the local area in general. My partner even borrowed a waterproof for our walk up Loughrigg. A lovely place to stay, delightful host and highly recommended

I am not the best at writing reviews but let me say one thing: If you are reading through the reviews thinking this place is too good to be true, don't worry! Robin is a great host and the place itself is fantastic. The room was clean, the shower was great and the breakfast was amazing. You can chose between Robin's amazing cooked breakfast, fruit, yoghurt, cereal, milk, toast with honey or marmalade. The parking on-site is a real bonus as there is not much space on the narrow roads that lead there. The bed is big and comfortable, and there are two radiators that work well and would almost certainly do a great job, should you decide to visit in winter. If you are not sure what do to whilst you are there, Robin is more than happy to suggest places to visit and where to eat.

Thank you for the great review! You'll have to try the "cave" downstairs next time, with it's cosy little wood burning stove and it's underfloor heating in the wet room!

If you are going to the Lake District, make your home base, make it at Ambleside. And if you are going to Ambleside, you should stay a Robin's place. The room and bathroom were large, tasteful and clean. Best of all, Robin is an excellent host. He has all the insides to the area, made great suggestions and makes a great breakfast. PS-if your a music fan, an extra bonus, we spent a lot of time swapping concert stories. Seriously, Robin and his place are perfect to stay with if you are going to the Lake District

With so many pleasant memories from our time at How's Head Barn, it is hard to know where to start. Ambleside is a delightful place in its own right but also a fantastic place from which to explore the Lakes District. We deliberately chose not to plan anything until we arrived, preferring to take guidance from the locals. What an unexpected surprise to find that Robin had been a tour bus driver in the Lakes District and hence knew exactly what we should see and the best routes to take. Combine that with the delightful Hows Head Barn accommodation and an awesome cooked breakfast, it was a truly wonderful holiday.
