The cowgirl-themed vintage Shasta camper is a short walk from the house where there is a bathroom just for campers. (There is no running water in the Shasta.) There's a fire pit facing eight acres of woodlands. Surrounded by nature, there is privacy and peacefulness. I am in a residential area but you wouldn't know it once you come down the driveway and enter a lush landscape. Come night it is pitch black except for the stars and moon. Often one can hear owls calling. Birds will wake you.

Le logement
One of the Appalachian trailheads is a five-minute drive from the camper. Many hikers have stopped here to rest up before continuing their hikes. Guests find the camper space to be cozy and surprisingly full of amenities. Most are up early and off to the trails or the museums, or both. The Shasta is right under a huge maple tree. Fireflies, birdsong, flowers, woods, .......Yet the Williams Theatre is a five-minute drive from here.

Autres remarques
You must have a cheerful tolerance for dogs and cats. (The cats make no demands). The dogs bark initially, but once greeted they all calm down to reasonable rambunctiousness. All three are under twenty pounds.

My house is in a residential area and the camper is in the driveway. Yet both are off the street and down a long driveway. Once here guests inevitably remark that they feel as if they are far from the hectic hurly-burly world. It is pretend camping but the illusion is quite easy to maintain. My place is surrounded by a veil of green.

After years of living in Houston, I moved to the Berkshires, retiring from my position as Writer-in-Residence at Rice University. Although my house is five minutes from Williams College, it's difficult to find, tucked back off the road, facing eight acres of woodlands. Guests say it's a surprise to find a slice of nature wonderland after you drive into "the compound." Birdsong will wake you. I love to host. I'm originally from Louisiana so expect a bit of New Orleans flavor: strong coffee, southern drawl, and southern hospitality. My dogs will greet you in an overly friendly manner. We are all somewhat demonstrative around here in our welcome to guests. There's a screen porch, a deck, a patio, a fire pit, and cozy rooms filled with art and books. Easily accessible from my home are The Clark, MassMoCa, besides the art installations this is where the music festivals take place--Fresh Grass Music Festival, Wilco; also I've hosted many families coming for Williams' graduation. There's hiking in close proximity--the trailhead for Appalachian Trail is nearby but also many other trails, as well as lakes--Windsor Lake, North Pond--and rivers--Green River, Deerfield. There's the Williamstown Theater Festival in the summer and Tanglewood is 30 minutes away. An abundance of riches! I'm in love with my new home base in the beautiful Berkshires--far away from the hustle and bustle of the city life. I've created a pocket of eccentricity here in Williamstown--some funky charm I brought North with me to my new abode.

Pendant votre séjour
You can pretend you are in a remote location or come in the house for company. But actually you will be five minutes to Williams College, ten minutes to the Clark, twenty minutes and you can be at MassMoCA. On the first floor of the house there's a half bath and upstairs there's a giant bathroom with shower and tub. You are welcome to use the kitchen, downstairs living area, and upstairs bath.
