This is my full time home and I live on site, but you won't see me too much as I often have a busy schedule. I'll usually give a house tour, show you around a bit, tell you a little family history about the place, and then you're on your own unless you call on me with questions or requests. I'm always up for a green smoothie. We have guests who will join us in a card game or share a glass of wine in the evening. Any time of year, with pre-planning, you may request an excursion around the quiet secluded neighborhood by horse and cart.

I apologize in advance for the lengthy message to follow, but after a few mishaps and several inconsiderate guests, I feel the need to spell it out for others.

House rules:
To the person responsible for booking this house,
We need you to share and enforce these house rules with all the people your group. You are responsible for each guest you bring into our home. Print, email, text, read aloud, do whatever it takes to be sure that they are informed, understand, and follow the house rules. We apologize for the long list. Some of it seems pretty obvious, but most of our house rules must be spelled out due to experiences with prior guests.

•Our belongings:
Respect our privacy. We are sharing our home and personal space with you. We live here full time. We try to leave out anything you might need. Sheets, blankets, pillows, bath towels, beach/pool towels, cups, kitchen supplies, shower supplies, etc. If you don't see something you need or if you forgot something, please ask first. Text, call, email, Airbnb message. Please don't go through our closets and drawers. Our personal stuff is hidden for a reason and is not "up for grabs". Personal pillows, heirloom blankets, my daughter's special shampoo, etc. are not part of the rental. It's always disappointing to find my great-grandmothers hand-knit afghan carelessly left outside with leaves stuck to it, when we deliberately tucked it away in a closet.

•More about our stuff:
Please return the paddles, life jackets, bikes, kayaks, and fishing poles to where you found them.

•Windows and Doors:
Close and lock all doors if you leave. You will be given a passcode to the front door. If you go out to dinner, lock it up as you would your own home. Front door, back door, porch door, kitchen door. Remember there are often curious sightseers that come up to the house. We prefer to discourage uninvited guests from taking a self guided tour of the house. Lower the windows before you go out. The Chesapeake Bay occasionally throws a storm our way that doesn't always show on the weather radar. These storms can ruin our 95 year old hardwood floors just as badly as a wet towel.

If you leave lights on all night, it will attract every bug in the neighborhood. Bugs don't need a passcode to crawl through the screen.

Please leave kitchen as clean as you find it and clean up as you go. Please do not wait until checkout time. Food left out will attract creatures of all sizes(yes, even the occasional raccoon). Use the cutting board, not the counter. If you don't know how to use a cast iron pan or a ceramic knife, please use something else.

Our county requires that we separate trash and recycling. Yellow bins are for bottles, cans, plastic bags, cardboard, disposable plates and cups, etc. We don't really compost. We just feed it all to the birds. Food scraps, produce cuttings and/or compost may be tossed over the fence to the chickens. When we let the birds back out after your stay, they'll enjoy the feast.

This is a smoke free house, but there is a beautiful waterside designated smoking area with table and chairs.
NO smoking elsewhere.
Not in the driveway.
Not near the barns.
Nor near the house.
Not at the pool.
Not on the porch.
Not on the balcony.
No exceptions, please. It's county mandated, it's important to the host, and Bayfields has already survived its fair share of house fires, inside and out. Please respect this.

•It might be hot:
The bay breezes do well in cooling the house most of the time. There are ceiling fans in each bedroom, and we have a "Whole House Fan" to pull in cooler air on still nights. However, please note that there is no AC in this house. Please plan ahead. Bring your swimsuit.

No glass containers. Pick up trash and cigarette butts. Put out campfires with water. Don't kayak while drunk. Wear life vests on kayaks(Maryland law requires that you ALWAYS have a life jacket with you) and tell someone when you're going out. Please tie up all kayaks after each use. Changing tides easily steal life jackets and paddles.

•Beach Sand:
Please rinse off before using pool, hot tub, or sauna. The hot tub and/or pool are not beach sand washing stations. Rinse before you enter.

•Pool solar cover:
if it was off leave it off. If it was on, put it back when you're finished swimming.

•Hot tub:
Set to 103°. Do NOT adjust the temperature. We leave it at 103°. For bubbles, point the control lever to "air on" and when you get out, simply point the control lever to "air off". The jets will stop on their own when they're ready. Occasionally too many people in the hot tub will cause it to overflow. It's ok. Please just refill it for the next guest. There is a garden hose nearby to refill the tub when you get out. When you leave, be sure lever is pointed to "air off" and leave temp setting at 103°.

•Wet Towels: Do not lay wet towels or swimsuits on furniture or floors. Wet towels can ruin our antique wood just as badly as an open window in a storm. Towel racks are provided in each bedroom. You can also hang wet towels on the coat rack in the greenhouse, the coat rack in the hallway, or the large towel rack just outside the waterfront door as well.

•Glass bottles:
No glass containers near the pool, beach, or dock, or any tile floors. Cool color-changing complimentary souvenir plastic cups are provided for each guest in each room.

Don't flush anything in the toilet except toilet tissue. It's an old septic system, needing gentle care. Paper towels, feminine products, napkins, etc may cause damage.

Except for pre-arranged event parking areas. please keep cars off the lawn. If I ask you to move your car, please do so immediately before others follow your lead.

Please don't let the cat in, no matter how nicely she asks.

•Quiet Hours:
Sound travels well over water. To keep it peaceful for our neighbors, we request that loud music, screaming children, or happy shouting at the pool must be silenced between 10pm and 8am.

•NO KEG PARTIES: Ever. Parties for up to 14 are extra and must be pre-arranged through me. If you have arranged to have party while staying here, you can expect me to stop by for a visit, to do a head count, or check for wet towels or beverages carelessly left on antique furniture.

•Cleaning Fee:
This covers ordinary cleaning after your stay. For example, after you leave we will sweep, mop, vacuum, strip beds, take care of all laundry, empty trash cans, scour bathrooms, and remake all the beds for the next guests. Big groups of friends or family reunions combined with feasting and alcohol seems to occasionally equal vomit on our bathroom floors and/or walls. As horrible as it sounds, accidents happen. It would be far better for you to clean up after Baby Festus or Aunt Bertha, than for us to do it hours later. We provide for you a Bodily Clean Up Kit in each bathroom available for your use. If you need the kit, please use it. However, if it's left for us, there will be an extra $100 BFCU Fee (Bodily-Fluid-Clean-Up Fee) for each instance of vomit or feces left on surfaces beyond the inside of our toilet bowls.

We hope you have a wonderful time here. We hope our long list isn't too insulting. I'm sure your group will have no trouble following our rules. Thank you for choosing Bayfields.

Everything about our 3 day stay at The Bayfields was perfect. My wife and I wanted a peaceful getaway that wasn't located too far from DC, but gave us the feeling of being far removed from the city, and we found it. Rawbin and Kurt were great hosts and treated us like we were old friends. They have really created a one of a kind place with a relaxing and laid back atmosphere that is exactly what we needed to truly unwind for the weekend. We made full use of the pool and the paddleboards and kayaks and spent most of the rest of our time in one of the many comfy spots enjoying the breeze and a book. Despite the temperature being in the 90's the property is so well shaded and breezy that we never felt it. The house stayed cool at night and we never missed the A/C once. All in all a wonderful place, and one that I hope can become a regular weekend getaway for us.

Such amazing folks! Right on the bay. Delicious food nearby. Soaking in the pool looking across the bay is magical.

Robin and Kurt greeted me and showed me around the house and property. They are the warmest and sweetest hosts! We enjoyed wine watching the sunset and I especially enjoyed the quiet beautiful West River.

I always love staying at Bayfields:) Rawbin is great! With the recent warm weather I was able to take several fantastic bike rides as the area is amazingly beautiful and perfect for this with only a small amount of local traffic.

What an amazing retreat getaway! By far the best AirBNB place we have stayed this far. Wonderful view of the bay, local wildlife, private comfy room in an amazing historic home. Made us feel like we were incredibly special. Amazing hottub and pool if it is the summer. Wonderful place to get married. I cannot say enough how great this place was.

Very relaxing setting. Picturesque waterfront property. Enjoyed sunset from the dock and sunrise from the porch. Sailboat regatta Wednesday evening was fun to see, especially with the rainbow backdrop a quick rain shower produced. The pool and kayaks were put to good use. Wish we could live here!

I thrive on fresh air, outdoor activities, raw fruits, veggies, and dark leafy greens. I love sailing, skiing, horses, bike rides, and romping with the dog. I love book collections, old cars, and antique furniture. I drive the coastline of the Chesapeake Bay in a convertible selling Maryland and Virginia Cruising Guides. I enjoy meeting new people and hearing their stories.
