Private apartment - lowest level of my historic town house - an ex-walk-up apartment building returned to its Antebellum glory. "Loft"-style. Queen bed, large lounging area, Full/double leather futon becomes 2nd bed if necessary. Awesome full kitchen, big full bath w/clawfoot tub, dining area, and laundry.

Le logement

Large, private, clean. It is in the lowest level so natural light is minimal, and so is the view. But the ceilings are almost 11 feet tall, and it is super quiet, well-designed (I'm an architect) spacious, and probably one of the best locations in Baltimore for all things cultural, business, walkable retail, public transit, etc. Great place for extended stay, especially if you are mixing business and pleasure.
Steps to everything downtown. Very safe street and area.
Literally 1 block from:
Multiple museums & cultural centers - the Walters, the Peabody, Engineer's Club, Indigo Hotel, the Basilica, the Main library, Maryland history museum, MV Marketplace, etc
all forms of public transit & zip car
many restaurants, bars & hotels.
Also central for bicyclists.

Accès des voyageurs

It is a self-contained apartment.

Échanges avec les voyageurs

It really depends on my schedule, however it is also my home (my apartment is on the floors above). I do request an introductory meeting to discuss basic protocol.

Autres remarques

Dedicated garage parking may be available upon request and for a fee (14$/day). Let me know well in advance or it may get reserved by someone else (or myself :).
I do my best to be fair to all guests by ensuring the space is well cared for by guests and being flexible regarding pricing to reflect use. So...
Pets are allowed if and only if they are screened BEFORE booking. I allow pets, but I can not allow ANY pets, including anything over 50 lbs, anything that might shed inordinately, destroy furniture, incontinent animals, or anything that could hurt another human being. If you book with me on instant book, or make a reservation request, and we have not discussed the pet, and we make a deal, and THEN you tell me about your pet, you may end up forfeiting the cost of your reservation.
As is typical there is a charge per-person extra to reflect added costs, and so that I can reduce the cost for single travelers. Feel free to discuss with me BEFORE booking if you have a special situation which might warrant a higher or lower fee. For instance if you are a couple and I can leave the couch rather than making the bed, or if you don't plan on using the kitchen, then I can probably reduce the price. Alternatively, if you require an exception to the "registered guests only" rule then we can discuss an extra charge for extra guests.
I think kids are great and I welcome them here - I'm a dad myself and work with youth in the area. Based on experience my overhead costs average out to the same whether the extra guest is 40, 10, or 1, so, although AirBnB defaults to a "kids stay free" policy, I feel that would be unfair to my "no kids" guests as I would then have to raise my prices to meet the overhead costs of kids staying here. Therefore I reserve the right to override AirBnB's defaults and charge the extra guest fee no matter what the age of the guest.

Pets must be approved BEFORE booking.
The Golden Rule - do onto others as you would have done to you. Example - consider my time to be as valuable as yours - please keep our scheduled time commitments such as agreed-upon check-in.
Always keep both front doors locked!
Please consider basic rules of decorum.
Feel free to come and go at any time as you wish - just be quiet about it :)
Please remove shoes in front foyer.
You booked the space for the guests approved, and no other (unless pre-approved by me).
Do not put feet on tables, chairs, couches, etc. Do not sleep on couches.
Treat linens considerately. Don’t sit or lie on top of comforters. Don’t use towels, washcloths, etc. to remove make-up or other highly staining substances.
Please be gentle with this historic house - surfaces, furniture, operable devices, and fixtures generally not the modern, bullet-proof ones you may be used to. They require extra care in use. Be conscious of unique doors and other operable parts - open and close them gently. Marble and wood surfaces are easily damaged by water, wet things (towels), hot or cold objects (such as cups or plates), etc.
Noise pollution is endemic out there - please don’t bring it in here. Use your indoor voice and step gently through the house. No running, especially up and down the stairs.
If possible please avoid eating in bedrooms - eat-in kitchenettes and common areas are made for dining and food prep.
Coasters are provided in every room - use them for cups and mugs.
Unless previously arranged with me, do not allow anyone not on the guest list into my private home.
Do not unplug anything. If you can’t find a place to plug in your device I can find it for you - outlets abound, there is no need to unplug power-strips, clocks, lights, etc.
Do not touch thermostats. If you are uncomfortable contact me. (This 8000 sf house uses 2 systems delicately balanced due to vertical stratification.)
Keep doors and windows to the outside closed (unless the weather is great and we have all agreed to forgo air conditioning or heating). If you must open a window in a guest suite please close it and lock it the moment you leave the room. Crime comes through upper-storey windows. Any paint or wood damage due to rain getting in will be charged against the deposit.
Always turn off all lights when not occupying a room (dimmer switched fully OFF, not just maximum dim...) Do not leave water running.
When disposing of trash please separate mixed recyclables from non-recyclable putrescibles. Only put putrescibles in containers lined with trash bags.
Do not rummage through drawers or cabinets in hallways or common areas. Only the drawers, shelves, cabinets, etc. in the bedrooms and full bathrooms are for your use. If there is something you can’t find in the kitchens, bathrooms or otherwise, please ask me rather than searching through my cabinets.
Similarly, unless I have shown you through a particular space or door upon check-in, please do not “explore” parts of the estate you have not been given access to. This includes the back patio / fire escape, laundry room, etc.

Lance's home is beautiful; the pictures capture the feel of the apartment. He was a wonderful host. Would recommend staying here to others, and would definitely stay here for my next trip to Baltimore.

Lance's home is in a great location. Pretty close to anywhere you may want to visit in Baltimore. He is very accommodating and friendly. The common area is gorgeous. The kitchen area is complete and modern. Take some time to talk to Lance and find out about the homes past.

My wife and I had a phenomenal stay with Lance at his beautiful home. We were in town for a wedding and wanted to stay close to the Harbor and Downtown Baltimore area. We could not have asked for a better experience. Lance was very accommodating and hospitable. We highly recommend Lance and his house in Baltimore to any potential guests. His house is very centrally located in the City which makes for easy transportation. The room we rented was very spacious and comfortable. The house was beautiful and well maintained. We greatly appreciate the opportunity to stay in his home and strongly recommend to other guests!

Lance was an outstanding host! He worked hard to be as helpful and accommodating as he could, and was always available to answer questions. He obviously cares a lot about the comfort and happiness of his guests. There's one important problem with the house -- it's so magnificent that you may decide you don't want to leave! In addition to your own suite, you'll have access to an incredible Victorian parlour, where I spent a lovely evening chatting with Lance. My room was far from Victorian in style; instead, it was a gorgeous modern space with high ceilings, which could easily be mistaken for a modern loft. The neighbourhood is great, with the Walters Art Museum less than a block away and lots of delicious food and coffee within walking distance. The house is easily accessible by public transportation (I arrived directly from the airport via light rail). The one caveat for some guests has to do with the fact that this is a basement room. In humid weather the space could be a bit damp and musty. But this wasn't a serious issue for me, even during hot weather -- I was quite comfortable. Overall, I had a great experience in this room and highly recommend it.

My home is a historic pre-civil war merchant’s townhouse that has been restored per the National Parks Service. The lifestyle of its’ original inhabitants meant a very large building with essentially 6 private apartments plus many grand common spaces. That means I can offer many configurations for guests. It is like a Bed & Breakfast that also can be combined, if necessary, for large groups. Perfect for AirBnB right? Unfortunately limitations of the AirBnB website require multiple listings - one for each possible configuration - for this one large house.
my global "policies" are best stated her, rather than updating each listing manually (15 times!). So:
A. Parties, entertaining, events, etc. While my place is vast, it is still a place I work hard to maintain, therefore unless we discuss specifically, up front, I ask that guests list the correct number of folks who will access the house when they book, and limit those folks to access. Put another way, my place is perfect for parties and entertaining, but please don't have parties or use my place for entertaining unless we have discussed up front and settled on arrangements (including fiduciary) to reflect the added risk and wear and tear involved.
B. For some reason AirBnB defaults to making kids essentially free of charge even if the host charges extra for guests above a certain number. I have found that my overhead costs are the same with extra kids as with extra adults... in fact often they are more! Therefore to be fair to my guests who don't have kids, I charge the same for extra kids as for extra adults. Please keep that in mind when booking.
To really see my extensive reviews you must look at them from my host profile rather than just the listing. For a brief synopsis of the house’s history and for a clearer idea of the layout of the mansion see baltimoretownhouse dot wee bly dot well, you know!

About me: I'm an architect, artist, dad, and I have been very involved in the improvement of this neighborhood for the past 11 years. If you value a host who knows everyone and everywhere in the neighborhood, look no further. As a professor of architecture at the local university, and as an urban history buff, I have given many walking tours of the area. If time allows I would be glad to do one for you. I continue to explore even the lesser known parts of the region and am good with directions :) I’m a big fan of all types of food, wine, European beer, cocktails, coffee (geez I’m not as gluttonous as this sounds!), and have been since I turned 19 during my first trip to Italy in 1990. Therefore I can make detailed recommendations regarding the many local food and beverage purveyors in the area.
I have traveled extensively (not much though since fatherhood! :), and lived in many parts of the U.S. as well as London and Melbourne, Australia, although ultimately I think I was supposed to be Italian!
Urban history and culture are of particular interest to me and when I have time I love to delve into my extensive book collection (which is accessible to my guests :). What makes me smile? My diverse group of friends, (many right here in the neighborhood!), beautiful art (I have 3 museums a block away and the train to the DC museums is about 7 blocks away!), thoughtful design, and most of all thoughtful people. Speaking of that - AirBnB!
I've hosted about 800 people at this point, and have been genuinely ecstatic to meet about 98% of them, feeling humbled to know there are so many accomplished and friendly human beings. I love meeting new people, and I have found that most people using AirBnB do too. Some guests need to focus on whatever purpose their visit brought them for. While staying in my home involves some basic contact for check-in, etc., I default to giving my guests as much privacy as possible. So I encourage my guests to communicate to me clearly, and as early as possible, regarding where on the spectrum they wish our relationship to stand... remember I can't read minds and I'm pretty hard to offend on this particular subject :)
Thank you
