Built into a forested hill beside a river, with a sleeping loft and in-floor radiant heating in a granite flagstone floor, a kitchenette and a three piece washroom, the studio is the perfect place to relax, rejuvenate or retreat into creative work.
Whispering River Studio Retreat is just 10 minutes from Parry Sound and located in a woods of old growth white pine, maple, oak and birch, on the banks of the Seguin River. In spring the scent of flowering crab and apple trees, wild roses, lilacs and pin cherries fill the air. Fall features gorgeous colour on the hills, and nearby hikes feature views of the rocks and cliffs that make this area famous throughout September, October, November and early December. Winter is beautiful too - the season of retreat and rejuvenation is filled with pristine vistas - and lots of snow for the dedicated snowshoe-er or cross country skier! If you want to enjoy a community Christmas, come and enjoy the many, many local activities centered around this warm and friendly time of year.
You are welcome to relax in the loft, the house's screened in porch, or on the studio porch or the look out and enjoy the gentle whisper of the river, or the wind in the pines. A short walk by the river is beloved by most guests - especially in the mornings when the mist often streams of the water.
There is a Heintzman upright grand piano in good condition the house that you are welcome to use. My baby grand in a nearby gallery is also available for rehearsals, workshops and concerts upon arrangement.
During the summer the Festival of the Sound at the Stocky Center is home to an International Classical Music Festival. String Quartets, classical and contemporary concert music artists grace the stage, and provide unparalleled musical inspiration for people drawn from all over the world.
An organic meal plan is available for guests from Mrs. Wilson's Kitchen -a nearby health inspected bakery that offers meals to go. This is an all organic bakery located 7 minutes drive over a country road from the house, built on a registered Canadian homestead. I am happy to put you in touch with Mrs. Wilson so that you can choose your meals in advance.
I have a propane gas stove, washer and dryer, and will provide you with bedding. There is a large whirlpool tub to relax in after a long hike through the maples, a paddle down the river, or a ski on a nearby trail.
The Seguin River flows swiftly to Mountain Basin Lake - a short 15 minute paddle from the house. You can take trips in either direction. There is excellent canoeing ( although in late August and September the water is very low - but it is still well worth doing the two or three lift-over through shallows), hiking, cross- country skiing, snowshoeing, fishing and hunting nearby. Deer Run Golf Course, a beautiful informal course with a waterfall in its backyard, is just across the road.

Built into a forested hill, the studio is ideal for your creative retreat. The studio building is separate from the house, spacious and well lit, with incredible acoustics. There is a sleeping loft, a bridge to the hill beside it to a lookout deck where you can write or just enjoy the view. In-floor radiant heating warms a local granite flagstone floor in the lower area - walking on it in winter is a true delight! A deck facing the river makes a great place to sit in large Muskoka chairs and enjoy the forest around you.
Their is an upright piano in the living room in the house, and a baby grand is available for rehearsal at Straw House Gallery, just 20 minutes away in McKellar. You are welcome to use either for personal practice. Both are well maintained for professional use. If you wish, you may perform house concerts at the Gallery by arrangement with me and the owner of the Gallery. The venue regularly attracts approximately 30-50 guests. You may also perform at the studio or in the house if you want to have a more intimate trial audience!
You are welcome to enjoy the house porches or the screened in porch over the river at any time.
The studio has a well equipped kitchenette with a crock pot, rice cooker, kettle, sink, bar fridge with a small freezer and infra-red hot plate. Organic coffee and a selection of teas is provided.
There is a laundry room with a washer and dryer and large sink in the main house for your use. The firepit is a great place to enjoy a long conversation and some organic local hot-dogs!

I am a cellist, music educator and writer/composer who works out of the house, so I will be available to answer any questions or concerns guests have throughout the day. I will be present at the house during your stay, and happy to guide you around the area, feed you or not, or stay out of your way, as you wish! Please simply clearly communicate your wishes to me, and I will be there or not as you want.
Pets are usually welcome, but I would prefer to meet them first via (SENSITIVE CONTENTS HIDDEN) or in person. I reserve the right to refuse a pet but for the most part I love dogs, and they are very welcome. I am allergic to cats. I have a large crate available, and there are many dog sitting services near by should you need them if you wish to do day trips. I own a rescue border collie who is kept on leash for his own safety - and yours.
I have many alternative, gluten free organic meals available, and am happy to provide a vegetarian meal plan.
No smoking please, and pets may not be left unattended in the studio, house or outside. You may not smoke anywhere on my property, and if you are a smoker, please be aware that smoke gets on clothes, luggage, towels, linens, everything - even if you don't smoke inside. I am very sensitive to smoke, as are many of my guests, and I will indeed notice if you smoke here, in any way, and I will charge you for any extra cleaning that is required to remove the smell, if it is possible to remove the smell, which it often isn't.
Yes I welcome weddings and small occasional celebrations on the property. However, I do not allow casual drinking parties.
Please respect that I have a rescue dog on the premises and do not come into the house unless i am there and can welcome you. Midnight is bedtime for house residents. Plugged in musicians need to check with me about noise levels...thanks.

I am a cellist, poet, composer and creator of events and operas. I am also a retired part-time music teacher who still teaches privately, conducts a youth orchestra, and loves teens.
I have always dreamed of an affordable place in this beautiful area where other artists could come to work and drink in the creativity of the space, and through their work energy be part of the inspiration that surrounds me here.
It is my hope that people will find musical/creative rejuvenation during their stay, whether they are artists or not. I hope they will find the time useful to themselves, and that they will leave full of inspiration.
I listen to all kinds of music (well, most kinds) and enjoy improvising and jamming. I am happy to stay out of the way and feed you so you can concentrate if you need to practice or work, or else act as a friend or even guide if you are here to sight-see, enjoy the Festival of the Sound or explore the area.
I am known for improvising while people are painting, or playing along with other poets and/or story tellers. Gardening is high on the list ( I have to come up with 5 things I can't live without it says here!) as is eating homemade lemon pie or corn bread and of course, solo canoe tripping. I like to sing, but people wish I wouldn't. I love dogs and training them to do all kinds of things, and own a rescued Border Collie who spends his days herding brooms. Seriously.
My main style of travelling is by canoe - in fact, if you arrive here by canoe you can stay for half price. I really enjoy philosophising if you like to, and if you don't, I am happy to laugh and just be a friend.
Life motto? Hmm...well, it's probably along the lines of "I will go where the music takes me."
