Custom built little apartment done by interior designer / architect, with beige stone and golden wood floors, clay-plastered walls in light grey, a sunny backyard for a smoke and a beautiful kitchen. There's a private garage right in the house in case you come by car which you can rent for 10 € / night if you need it. The central station is walking distance though, train ride to the airport 11 minutes (seriously. Take that London). The trade fair is just across the river - you can't really be more central then here, without having to deal with the tourist madness of the "old town", the area on the other side (south) of the cathedral.

You'll have the whole apartment for yourself. High speed wifi & hardwire internet, tiny bathtub with shower, kitchen table with room for 4, fridge, oven & small dish washer, fresh towels, fresh linens & bedsheets, and basic cooking ingredients such as coffee, tea, spices, noodles, rice - so hopefully everything you need.
No washing machine but launderette right by. All facilities are new, including the windows, central heating and all water pipes, so it's very warm if you want it to be in the winter, but cool in the summer, and there's amazing water pressure in the shower. There's a loft bed with possibly the most comfortable stairs one could have (mattress measures 160 cm x 200 cm) and a couch that can be turned into a bed (mattress measures 130 cm x 193 cm), both in the same room. That said, our place can technically host four people - but while it's pretty, it's also tiny, so I leave it up to you to decide wether you like such a full (or cosy) house. You're welcome to try!

We live and work upstairs in the same house, and while Hanna is travelling a lot, Mattes is mostly in Cologne and can help with all needs when Hanna is away. Mattes has built much of the interior so knows everything about the place.

Regarding check in and check out, we try to be as flexible as we can and have so far been able to meet almost any needs regarding the schedule of our guests. Nevertheless, we do need a few hours to clean, so we usually go with check out until noon and check in after three. Please just ask if you'd like to check in outside of the usual times.

The area is beautiful and rough, shiny and run down, expensive and poor, green and amazingly quiet while one of the few places where Cologne feels like more than just another West-German provincial town and offers a sort of glimpse of the world. It's the last bit of the center remaining the strange mixture of street-glamour and shadiness that Cologne was so known for in the 60s, with headlines comparing the city to (1960s) Chicago. There's a specific (and strange) sense of nostalgia among locals for this era, you can literally book neighbourhood-tours with ex-pimps, now in their 80s but still sporting their silver-Adidas-tracksuit and all sorts of bling, and if national TV does a documentary about Cologne, there's a 95 % chance it's shot in the five streets surrounding my house. While I personally find TV crews a bit annoying, the upside is that while the rest of Cologne is slowly getting Starbucks'ed, here you still find a sort of wild, entertaining, colorful, sometime sad but mostly joyful street life (and my house is in a quiet side road).

Churches of ten different centuries meet small art galleries showcasing noise concerts in brutalist concrete proto-parks, weird playgrounds are close to colorful food shops, traditional centuries-old beer houses and 24-hour lentil soup palaces right by tiny but great music venues such as King Georg, turkish wedding dress boutiques below what people assume are secret brothels. It's a place where people want to live who're from this city and actually like living in a city, such as a lot of artists and musicians. A friend of mine once said, "this is where you assume the Mafia is running the catholic kindergarden, but still everyone gets along perfectly fine".

Pro-tipp: if old people randomly chat you up - people talk to each other on the streets here - and you manage to communicate despite language barriers, listen to them - they have the best and often strangest stories, from them having performed as a vocalist with Stockhausen to the pre-WW2-underground-club in the basement of what is now a furniture store - they know it all.

A dream for public transport although you might end up walking everywhere, as it's really right in the center.

Please note that the only other flat in the building (Hanna's flat) is getting renovated at the moment, so you'll enjoy a rather picturesque view of a pretty church but also of building materials in the backyard, and will enter the house through an unrenovated hallway leading to the apartment.
This will change though, so if you're booking in advance, you might as well be able to look at a backyard full of plants instead of stones and woodpanels.

Any questions please just ask. This is our private place, no professional AirBnB, and we want you to feel good. We're from Cologne, and happy to advise on good things to see & do, especially when it comes to music and unusual places & spaces.

Hanna hat mich sehr nett in Empfang genommen. Das Apartment ist superschön, sogar mit einem kleinen Garten. Die Lage sehr central. Ich kann es nur weiterempfehlen und würde es selbst jederzeit wieder buchen.

This was a great place to stay while I was visiting Cologne. The bedroom was dark and quiet. I got a very good sleep. The kitchen was a wonderful space to make a nice breakfast. It is not so clear from the photos, but there is also a cosy back yard that you could use. Hanna was very professional and responsive. The apartment was better than I expected.

Die Unterkunft ist pragmatisch aufgeteilt und liegt nicht weit vom Dom entfernt. Dadurch kommt man mit der Bahn schnell überall hin.

We're both interested in music, sound, architecture, places, stunning views, ideas, structure and functionality of stuff that surrounds us, random new things - and people, especially those who are passionate about something in their very own way.

We're very good friends and both travelled a lot for work and for pleasure, and after having had great experiences with AirBnB as guests around the world, decided to share Hanna's small, beautiful and a little unusual place too, and rent it out when she's away - which as of now is almost all the time.
In addition to that, we're helping a friend and rent out the beautiful maisonette he moved out of as well, until a new person moves in.
Mattes is in Cologne a lot at the moment, so if you come while Hanna isn't there you'll probably meet him!
