Candolim is a great place for all ages, It is ideal for couples, single travellers and adult groups seeking a place to unwind with lots of culture. Loads of fantastic shops selling jewellery and leathers, and tailors happy to make you anything you like at a fraction of the price it would cost you at home.
There is a lovely air conditioned cappuccino bar past The Stone House Restaurant where you can buy wonderful ice creams and there is usually some live music or a karaoke.
The positive side of the hawkers' and stallholders' attention is that you will find some fantastic bargains, especially if you bide your time and get a feel for the value of things there. As you receive offers on your travels, you will find that the price gradually drops. If in doubt about what to pay for something, chat to locals (not sellers) about what might be a reasonable price (obviously, this is easier with items locals actually buy, such as spices, clothes and gold jewellery, rather than the purely tourist items like sarongs, cheaper jewellery, soapstone carvings etc). The haggling can be great fun, and is all very friendly.
If you know exactly what you are looking for (particularly Indian clothes, jewellery and local spices), then a trip to Mapusa or Panjim will probably get you a better price and higher quality. Supertailors and many of the Jewellers may charge a bit more, but the standard of workmanship is high and it can save a lot of time being nearby for fittings etc.
Candolim is a good base to travel around the rest of the Goa. It is very close to Panjim, the capital which is definitely worth a visit.Go to a place in Panjim called The Pastry Cottage and you can get a cappuccino, two sodas, and three fabulous cakes and it costs about 51 rupees. (about 70 pence) The shopping in Panjim is fantastic.
The professional shop owners, such as tailors and jewellers, will usually offer a good service and price, as they know many people will return to Candolim, and will not only use them again if they were happy with their purchases, but will also recommend them to others. To avoid a bad experience, try to use those recommended by people who have used them before, particularly if the recommendations come from people who have used them in previous years.
From Candolim you can travel around 15-20 mins away to Coco Beach. It is a really authentic beach with fisherman catching their fish. To get onto the beach you have to go through paddy fields and pass local houses. Don't expect it to be Caribbean white sand. The sand is dark but it is very safe here to swim which is a nice change from the wild waves of Candolim.
You really cannot go wrong in Candolim. Calangute is absolutely mad, very, very noisy. Great to visit but you definitely wouldn't want to stay there unless you want to be in the disco every night. Baga attracts a very young hippy type crowd. Candolim is ideal for adult families and groups seeking a peaceful and relaxing holiday, yet with plenty of atmosphere and Indian culture.
While in Candolim ladies , why not take this opportunity to pamper yourself? Get your nails done in one of the local nail art shops. Or gents , why not indulge in the luxury of a genuine shave at the barbers? A great way to experience Goan life and contribute to the natural economy. Take advantage of the amazingly skilled tailors in the area - highly recommended is the tailor in the Don Hill hotel. You name it , this guy can make it. Ensure you use the opportunity to try the local lobster. Very popular is the Dolphin shack on Canadolim beach run by John and Angela and the family. You will be treated like kings. If you have had your fill of curry, The Mermaid just off the main Candolim road offers fantastic buffalo steak.......the stone house also offers a well varied menu and a beautiful and chilled out setting.
The Mango Grove restaurant on the main road serves great breakfasts and main meals in a wonderful setting in the middle of town, where you can watch the hustle & bustle of the main street. Lobster here is highly recommended, as are the Planter's Punch cocktails. The Chinese restaurant opposite Supertailor also serves wonderful meals and Mai Tai cocktails. Here they will photograph every customer on their first visit, and have it up on the wall within a couple of days, to encourage you to return to see it. Quite an endearing gimmick, which is not a problem, as you would want to return at least once more to sample some of the delicious-sounding dishes you couldn't eat the first time.
The best tip for Candolim, and Goa as a whole: Make sure you talk to the locals! They are the best guide book you can have.

You can hire a two wheeler or a private car with driver.

If you are travelling by train, get down at Thivim Station and opt for prepaid cab just outside the station or prepaid cab from Dabholim airport,if you are travelling by air.
