If you want your trip to be a truly memorable one, skip those humdrum hotels and step back in time at Bridge House in Skibbereen.

In high summer, Bridge House, with its overflowing window boxes a riot of colour, is an unmissable landmark in Skibbereen.

The interior of the house is a veritable treasure trove, filled, as it is, with beautiful antique Victorian furniture and an eclectic mix of diverse curios. Every corner of this quaint establishment offers something new and surprising to dazzle the eye.

Little wonder, then, that a poll of listeners on one of Ireland’s most popular radio programmes voted Bridge House ‘Ireland’s Most Unusual B & B’.

My guests have access to my home, which could almost double as a museum to the quirky and ephemeral.

During the twenty-five years I have been in this business my motto has always been ‘Come as a guest and leave as a friend’. The phrase ‘mi casa es su casa’ was invented for me.

Skibbereen is a friendly market town with a wealth of attractions at its doorstep – history, geography, nature and culture all merge in this cosmopolitan town.

There is a bus service from Cork to Skibbereen (five times daily) which stops virtually outside my front door.

The town of Skibbereen is one of the most quaint, sweet towns I have ever been to. As this was my first trip to Ireland, I was taking a chance on booking at an Airbnb. Mona describes herself as a collector - yes, she is. And it is whimsical and funny (you'll see a Komodo dragon outside the window). She was extremely helpful and friendly. I don't know if I have slept that well in a very long time. The bed was so comfortable! Mona offered me breakfast every morning, starting with fruit and making eggs the way I like them with delicious brown bread. And everyone knows Mona! Whenever anyone asked where I was staying, they all knew exactly where I was and knew her. There was a great sense of community there. I will definitely travel back there and will probably stay with her again! I had a much better experience than those I knew who were staying in the more "well-known" hotel around the corner.

Mona was a great host and she did everything in her power to make us feel at home and comfortable. Her house is definitely unique and she does make a wonderful breakfast, both aesthetically pleasing and extremely delicious. I would advise not to carry big luggage cases, as the rooms are located upstairs and the staircase can be a bit narrow, but nothing that can't be manageable. Skibbereen is a charming town with very friendly people and we loved our stay there. Big thanks to Mona and Seline, the girl who was helping her around the house :)

Mona's place is exactly as described, a veritable feast of antiques and curios. The location is perfect for visiting Skibberreen, right in the centre, close to restaurants and shops. I was however disappointed with her attitude to the fact that I had booked through Airbnb. On both mornings of my stay she pointed out that I wasn't really entitled to a cooked breakfast but that she would give it to me anyway. After paying €45 for the 1st night and an additional €35 for the 2nd as my daughter joined me I felt that I had paid enough for an attic room with a shared bathroom and very noisy pumped hot water. I think that Mona should either charge extra for her Airbnb guests or else not give them a cooked breakfast, but I know that it didn't sit well with me being made to feel that I was getting something I hadn't paid for.

Mona's B&B looked exactly like the pictures. It was quirky and full of interesting pieces. The location was very central and perfect for what we wanted. Breakfast was excellent! However, as was made clear to us by Mona, a full breakfast, like the one we got, is not mandatory for her to provide for people who book through Air BnB. This was not clear to us when booking. When we first checked in, we were initially brought to one bedroom, but were moved soon after when Mona realised that we had booked through Air BnB. We were told that we were on a much lower rate and whether intentionally or not, were made to feel rather inferior as a result. However, as we found out when leaving, we had in fact paid a higher rate than if we had booked the room directly. All in all, the room was comfortable and clean, the breakfast was beautiful and the location was perfect. It was just a pity that choosing to book through Air BnB had a bearing on how we were treated.

We found the guest house without any difficulty but when we arrived we were told we were double booked, Mona directed us to a nearby B&B which was lovely.

Mona was so gracious. And the breakfast she prepared for us was incredible. The fruit was so beautifully served. Great stay.
