The Cannaregio Canal, which was the main route into the city until the construction of a railway link to the mainland, gave the district its name (Canal Regio is Italian for Royal Canal). Development began in the eleventh century as the area was drained and parallel canals were dredged. Although elegant palazzos were built facing the Grand Canal, the area grew primarily with working class housing and manufacturing. Beginning in 1516, Jews were restricted to living in the Venetian Ghetto. It was enclosed by guarded gates and no one was allowed to leave from sunset to dawn. However, Jews held successful positions in the city such as merchants, physicians, money lenders, and other trades. Restrictions on daily Jewish life continued for more than 270 years, until Napoleon Bonaparte conquered the Venetian Republic in 1797. He removed the gates and gave all residents the freedom to live where they chose. [Wikipedia]

- Highlights and tourist attractions

T-Fondaco (Fondaco dei Tedeschi) - the DFS luxury shopping mall near Rialto's Bridge is at 25 minutes by feet but can be easily reached by public boat service or boat taxi. Even if you are not a fan of luxury shopping you can enjoy its marvellous, world renown, roof terrace on the Grand Canal.

Ca' d'Oro - just about the most beautiful palace on the Grand Canal, it's now a gallery with lovely views over the Grand Canal.

Santa Maria dei Miracoli - one of the most beautiful churches in Venice is in the far east of Cannaregio; an unmissable Renaissance marble treasure.
Fondamenta della Misericordia - an attractive canalside walk, with bars and restaurants.

Campo dei Mori - a small square famous for its turbaned statues; reminders of Venice's wide trading links.

Jewish Ghetto - the origin of the term 'ghetto'; home to Venice's Jewish population for centuries.

Madonna dell'Orto - a pretty gothic church with a brick facade

Gesuiti - an overpowering church with an interior apparently by Laura Ashley: your jaw will drop.

Oratorio dei Crociferi - small chapel with paintings by Palma il Giovane.

Fondamenta Nove - a useful collection of ferry stops for boat trips to the lagoon islands.

Cannaregio Canal - the second largest canal in Venice, this was once the main route into town.

The Casino - housed in a grand Renaissance palace, Ca' Vendramin Calergi, Venice's casino is always keen to attract tourists. Richard Wagner died in the building: his rooms can be visited at pre-booked times.

- Do not throw objects, except toilet paper, in the toilet drain (use the trash can).
- Kitchen, cutlery and dishes must be left clean (however we wash them in the dishwasher before any arrival).
