Le logement

Surangana estate now comprises of two villas set in the serene surroundings of the Sri Lankan rural interior, but still within 10 minutes of some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. The first is the main house...A spacious colonial house set in a tropical garden , with vast columned verandahs, central courtyard and large airy rooms built to allow the breeze to pass through the house. This creates a natural air conditioning . An infinity edge swimming pool juts out over the paddy field view on a lower garden level . This is tropical barefoot indoor/outdoor living at its best. Internally : 5 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms ensuite 1 living room opening on 4 sides . 2 inner courtyards 4 Verandahs Library/ Kids bedroom/ anteroom adjacent to master bedroom Master Bath is set in a private outdoor garden with a secret passageway to a private terrace. Please note that the private terrace is quite high so not suitable for children, so we normally keep the doors to the private terrace locked. If you would like to view then just ask Manoj. There is also a newly constructed basic air- conditioned Gym with a self contained shower area if anyone is feeling active in your group

The second smaller villa called "The Paddy House" (partly because it overlooks the paddy fields and small Tea plantation, but also partly a nod to my family's Irish roots :) Is basically a large self contained, Air Conditioned one bedroom villa with a Kitchen and bathroom. The doors have different jewels embedded in them as the house is perfectly aligned with the sunrise and it creates an almost "Northern lights" style effect in the room when the sun rises in the morning. The doors open up to a terrace with an incredible infinity pool on one side and a newly constructed treehouse chill out area for breakfast , lunch or a pre- dinner cocktail with the most incredible views.

There is also a separate Staff quarters, Kitchen, Laundry and Storerooms Wells on Site Mains electricity ,Surangana Garden and Land: The 3 acre property is both landscaped and unlandscaped tropical garden. The villa itself is on a small hill facing an exceptional 180 degree view over verdant paddy fields with the Koggala lake in the distance. The area is very rich in birdlife with native Sri Lankan and Indian migrating birds who nest in the area on bird sactuaries and in our garden.

We chose this spot for its mesmerizing view, beauty and peacefulness. The seaside is 3km from the villa: an advantage as it is close enough for easy access on a recently tarred road , and far enough to be able to maintain the quiet and keep away the hustle and bustle of the main road. As this is a rural property you will get visits from monkeys, chipmunks, frogs, iguanas and all kinds of weird and wonderful birds / animals. Many people have said its like having your own zoo at your doorstep! Trees on the property: Cinnamon, Clove, Teak, Estonia, Bamboo, Jakfruit, Nutmeg, Coconut palms and king coconut, Frangipani , Avocado, Mango, Papaya, Lime, Orange and Banana. Harumalgoda, the area immediately around the property, is made up of rice paddy lands, cinnamon plantations, low country tea plantations and roaming buffaloes on the plains around the lake. The Galle Area and Southern Sri Lanka: Galle is the southern port town of Sri Lanka, 122km from the capital Colombo . The Fort is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the only place in Sri Lanka to retain old world charm in its winding streets and Dutch and British architectural remains. Aside from the Fort, the south is famous for its coastal seafaring culture, abundant seafood, white beaches, stilt fisherman at Weligama , gem and jewelry merchants, Elephant Polo , the antiques town of Ambalangoda and further afield the nature reserves of Yala. Villa is fully staffed with and English speaking Butler/House Manager, Manoj Ushara, a fantastic Chef, a gardener and a nightwatchman. All drinking water is delivered weekly the property and we have large rainwater collection system/storage that provides water for showers etc. Scuba and fishing are easily arranged and beach is a 5 minute Tuk drive away.If you are a party of 3 or 4 the Manoj can arrange a Tuk tuk wherever you wish to go . If more then he can arrange suitable transportation like a people carrier. drivers are relatively cheap to hire for day trips to Yala or Kandy etc. There are 3 or 4 bikes at the villa for any adventurous guests willing to brave the Sri Lankan roads. There are 2 iMacs at villa and Wireless broadband is available there as well as at the beautiful Fortress Hotel which is a 10 min Tuk drive away and 4G internet is widely available in most inland areas of the South Coast. The house has been completely refurbished over the past Month and new top of the range "Spring Air" mattresses bought for all the guest rooms.

Michael's place is incredible. Even better than the pictures. It's absolutely gorgeous. Stunning decor, beautifully kept grounds. Beds are super comfortable, as are the seated areas on the deck. We just lounged about, getting in and out of the pools. The food was incredible, too. We had every meal cooked for us at a very reasonable price for such a high standard. Staff at the house were incredibly helpful and friendly. They organised drivers and transfers throughout our week, and also tuktuks for local excursions. Some of our group visited a local school (which Michael supports) which was lovely. Highly recommend this place. I can't stop raving about it to all our friends. Don't hesitate - just book it.

It was just as relaxing as we hoped. The accommodations were nice and clean with a great staff. The pools were the best part. The TV and Internet were great, the monkeys were fun, and the scenery was beautiful. We loved that the staff helped arrange all our transport and activities. It was a bit hot so more A/C would be great. We loved playing ping pong and chilling on the lounge chairs. It was awesome!

This is a fabulous, beautiful airy house just off a quiet road which we really enjoyed staying in. As two families it had plenty of room for us to have our own space when required, with lots of comfortable stylish spots to reconvene for sundowners, meals, drinks, lounging etc. We were spoilt for choice with 2 pools - one shadier and cooler near the house, the other offering stunning views out to the jungle beneath and had shady pagoda-esque area to cool off in. The staff were impeccable - anticipating our every need throughout the day with an easy, laid-back charm. They were extremely helpful and always with a ready smile and willingness to ensure we were comfortable and happy without being intrusive. The rooms are all very comfortable and cool enough with overhead fans - bliss not to have air con and be able to enjoy the breeze and hear the birds and wildlife all around, monkeys included (who were remarkably well behaved!). There are also some lovely, peaceful walks to go on along the quiet lanes around the house, past paddy fields, everyday country life in Sri Lanka - people are very friendly and respectful that makes walking incredibly peaceful particularly early morning or towards the end of the day. The house is well situated as it is set back from the busier beachside road but it's v easy to get down there in a tuktuk in 5/10 mins and play in the surf. It's quite rough but fine for splashing around in the shallows and great body surfing. Being situated on the beach front would be a mistake as it's pretty noisy. Talking of noise, my only grumble would be the dogs at night. There are countless numbers in neighbouring houses and at night they can go a bit nuts - they were markedly worse during full moon, but the barking was quite annoying generally. It's a small thing and the only point that I can possibly think of that in no way overshadowed what was otherwise the most perfect airbnb experience. Huge thanks Michael and all your brilliant staff!
