Description

A very quiet house of 90 square metres of 970 square feet. It is situated in a two-acre grove of olives and oaks, on a hill which overlooks the mountains, the valley and the long beach of Eressos. An ideal retreat for those who like to watch birds, read, walk, admire the sea view and the sunset from the nearby terrace. At the same time our house is only ten minutes by car from the beach town (which has many tavernas and coffee bars, grocery and fruit shops) and the magnificent beach of Eressos.

Our house consists of the following: living room with sofa that can unfold into a double bed; large upper bedroom with double bed, connected to the living room with staircase; large kitchen and large toilet with shower; small bedroom with single bed; an external WC with shower at a distance of 20 meters from the house.

It is situated in a two-acre grove of olives and oaks, on a hill which overlooks the fertile valley and the long beach of Eressos. The environment is very quiet and beautiful, ideal for those who like to watch birds, read, walk, admire the view and the sunset from the terrace.

At the same time the house is only ten minutes by car or motorbike from the beach settlement and from the traditional stone-built village of Eressos, situated at 4 kilometres inland. In both places many restaurants and coffee-bars offer very good food (including fish) and entertainment at exceptionally low prices. Shops of all kinds sell groceries, fruit, meat and cheese, for those who like to organize their own household, while fish mongers come daily from town to sell fresh fish.

The sandy beach of Eresos is arguably one of the most scenic in Greece. It is very long (1,5 kilometre), large and clean. It has good orientation, since it faces the south, so the sea is normally calm and clear. Moreover, it enjoys a spectacular sunset. At one end it is flanked by a string of elegant restaurants, tavernas and coffee-bars, with roofed wooden verandas overlooking the sea. At its other side it is quiet and sparsely frequented, ideal for those who seek isolation and serenity or nudism.

Mytilene (or Lesbos) is a big and beautiful island, with varying landscapes and stone-built villages, a living museum of traditional architecture. Fortunately it never became too touristic, and so has retained its local flavour and relaxed atmosphere. Eressos is about 90 kilometres from the town and the airport, or a one and half hour drive. Visitors may rent a car at the airport or hire a taxi for about 85 Euros.

Eressos was one of the five city-states of ancient Lesbos. One may see today remnants of the ancient wall and findings exhibited in the small local museum. Eressos was renowned in antiquity for being the birthplace of Sappho (630 B.C.), the lyric poetess who composed love songs and was adored by ancient Greeks. It was also the birthplace of Theophrastus, important philosopher and natural scientist, who succeeded Aristotle in the direction of his school.

FAR FROM THE MADDENING CROWD: In almost 40 years of travelling to various parts of Greece, Eleni & Nikos are by far the best hosts we've ever had the pleasure of staying with. Very considerate, kind and welcoming, curious and funny, and nothing was too much to ask for (in fact, much was volunteered). On our late arrival, Nikos waited for us in the village to take us to the lovely secluded property. The photos, pretty as they are, don't do it justice: the house and garden are much nicer and bigger than the pictures show. The kitchen is very well-equipped and it was well-stocked with all kind of goodies like bread, tea & coffee, drinks, fruit, veggies, eggs etc., as well as olives and olive oil from the property. Good ventilation, good beds, good shower, much comfort etc. During our stay we had great conversations (on a wide range of topics) and laughs with Nikos & Eleni, all the while enjoying sunsets, drinks and nibbles. The property is a lovely terraced olive grove with other trees (oaks and others) scattered in between, and it is teeming with life. We are keen amateur birdwatchers and found this a great place to see migratory and other birds, with over 50 species seen on or from the property, including sought-after species like nightjar, redstart and rufous-tailed robin plus our daily portion of bee-eaters. Our favourite place of observation was a spot under a huge oak and a large terebinth tree (pistacia terebinthus), the latter's fruits being a magnet for all kinds of birds in autumn, including orioles and many kinds of warblers. Conveniently, Nikos and Eleni have placed a comfy hammock there, which caused many a birding daytrip to be cancelled in favour of observation from the hammock, and so the idea of "lazy birding" was born. We will never get better views of some rare or shy birds as we did here! The daily visits from the local Persian squirrels were also delightful, as was having dinner with Nikos (Eleni temporarily working in Athens) and being invited to a cultural gathering where Nikos gave a very interesting lecture about Sappho's poetry. Nikos is also a fount of knowledge of all things concerning Lesbos, which he will share with you enthousiastically. All in all, we could hardly find fault with anything here, and if there had been something, it would have been taken care of. So, don't come here if you want bright lights, big city, cheap entertainment, noisy parties, loud music. But if, like us, you like peace, quiet, nature, reading and the (not intruding) company of delightful, intelligent and caring hosts, and if you don't mind travelling along the bumpy track to go to restaurants and Eressos' great beach, this is the place to come. We left with sadness in our hearts as it already felt like leaving good friends. We will certainly return. Thank you Eleni & Nikos (also thanks for the aftercare: taking care of our parking ticket).

Eleni and Nikos are the most helpful and friendly hosts that I've ever had. They are ready to share anything with you. Their meal, bicycle, motorcyle, their time, memories at the island, friends, advices, anything. They even supplied a Greek mobile phone for us to easily communicate. The house is wonderful. It has every thing you need. Towels, soaps, candles, a refrigerator full of eatables and drinkable, a wonderful kitchen, lots of beautiful paintings and photos on the wall and much more. You wake up with the singing of the birds and go to bed with a gentle breeze of the island. Some days we even didn't go swimming but just spent the day at the beautiful garden of the house, eating newly picked up figs. We enjoyed spending time together with Eleni and Nikos and of course with their beautiful friends at the Island. I just can't wait for the next summer.

Nikos and Eleni are incredibly welcoming and warm, wonderful to talk to and spend time with. They have been staying in Eressos for many years and know a lot about the area, which they are happily willing to share... the house is adorable, and exactly like in the photos, right behind the house of Nikos and Eleni. The fact that it is hidden in the valley means that the environment is truly wonderful, surrounded by Olive and oak trees, nature sounds and in the evenings the whole galaxy of stars. It is a 10 minute drive along a dirt road from the main road, and the first time one follows Nikos to the house, it seems a bit long. But once you learn the road, it doesn't feel long at all. Nikos and Eleni are both helpful in teaching the way, as well as going out of their way to make sure that your stay is comfortable and you have everything you need. we were welcomed with a full fridge, olives from the garden and their own olive oil. What a treat!! Will certainly come back here again :)
