The Nest! Fitzroy off bustling Smith & Gertrude Sts is a big old dame of a terrace house offering a large spacious extremely comfortable room for short termers to have a home, in between exploring the very funky local area. A 2nd room is listed on airbnb.
This place is totally fabulously located - see the reviews!
It is a comfortable bedroom space for two but there is an extra room with a double bed to accommodate up to 4 in total. This is a quirky old dame of a home with loads of typical Fitzroy charm. It will suit the those who appreciate a terrace house - heritage interiors experience. Organic soaps provided, some organic linen and bamboo towelling will suit the preferences of greenies. Some vintage, some Ikea, some fabulous local artists designs are combined to create a comfortable, tasteful and tidy abode.
The city, the MCG, the Australian Open, the gardens, the hospitals, the universities are all a 15 minute walk away at the closest points. There is local bike hire. There are 6 tram routes in the immediate vicinity. No 86 (Gertrude and Smith Sts) goes past three doors away. Nos 112 (Brunswick St), 96 (Nicholson St) 109 and 12, (Victoria St) are 5 minutes walk away. There's a few local buses very nearby too. There is only short term parking on the street - sadly no parking permit available.
The area is overflowing with fabulous variety of eateries. There are endless entertainment options in the immediate area and in easy walking distance. Tea, coffee, small carton of milk, some breakfast cereals and toast making facilities are available. If you want to do alot of cooking this is probably not the place for you unless you want to cook up a feast for everyone that everyone wants to have. It's ok to cook meals as long as you work around Jane and dont take over the kitchen. Communication about your needs is the key.
Self access instructions are provided.

I am helpful, friendly and busy. I am a local 50+ Fitzroyal who works away from home 8am - 6pm. I go out alot in the evenings and have friends over for social times at home. I am happy to provide lots of local info and share a glass of bubbly or vino and discuss the life in general and Melbourne in particular but if u need a concierge you need to stay at a hotel.
While children are warmly welcomed it hasn't worked for other guests to have really little ones who might be teething or waking up late crying loudly in the middle of the night etc. These kids need a different kind of place to have their needs and rhythms met without having to consider other guests needs. The walls between bedrooms are solid brick but not that soundproof! Older children and young adults need to comply with house rules and supervising adults are responsible for making sure of that.
There are lots of separate spaces but please dont take over any and clean up after yourself immediately. If you need to do alot of cooking best to communicate about that and work out how to make that fit in with Jane and any others.
Cupboard for dry foods and a shelf in the fridge are available. If you want to cook the occasional meal or potter in the kitchen please keep it ready for the next person to use at all times unless you've arranged to cook for everyone.
The main rule is value driven - you need to "fit in" as a respectful and trustworthy guest with me as your host and with Ingrid my house mate or any other guests who might be staying. In particular clean up after yourselves immediately and don’t take over the kitchen unless you've asked me if you can cook up a feast for everyone. That could be fun!
For some people these rules will be “no-brainers” - others have needed to have it spelt out:
Registered guests only, visitors by arrangement.
If you are the last one out make sure all the doors are locked
When you are at home either the front security door or the solid front door needs to be locked at all times.
Hang your keys at the front door when yr home at all times
Keep the front gate latched
Switch off aircon, heating, lighting when you dont need them.
Dont run any water while someone else is in the shower.
Dont wash your dishes under running water
No smoking on the property.
Guests are expected to be respectful, reliable and trustworthy with all other members of my home. Dont go into anyone elses room

Very creative, very brave, very sensitive with an eye for the comforts of others, more than a dash of green in my enviro veins... I was inspired to create Live Like a Melburnian after travelling to europe and feeling very disappointed with the very generic accom we had in Paris. We could have been anywhere in the world, there was no sense of love for Paris in our place. In Rome behind the Colosseum I came across some great street art of a northern african in gladiator clobber with a bucket of paint and a roller and a big cheesy grin. Over his head it said "When in Rome..." When I returned to Melbourne I decided to create a place where visitors to Melbourne could experience the local design scene that Melbourne is famous for.... The Nest! St Kilda fulfils that creative dream and has been enjoyed by scores of people from all around the world. I hope you too enjoy it! See more at
