Le logement

Carrizo House is a cozy, old fashioned country cottage built around a green patio. The main building has a joined kitchen, living and dining space plus a writing cove that gets beautiful light throughout the day. Overhead is a pine floored, nest like sleeping loft. Adjacent, off the patio, is a separate adobe building with the two bedrooms, each with French doors that let in the morning light, white washed walls and wood beamed ceilings. Just beyond these is the water free, odorless composting toilet.
This compact house incorporates the tidy inside and the vast outside with French doors that open onto porches that lead to patios and shady sitting areas. The shower is outdoors in a sun dappled banana grove and the longer you shower, the greener the trees grow! An indoor hammock gives you the option of a “tropical couch”. In front of the house there is a small canal that has clear running water much of the year, and beyond this there is a large open lawn with views of the Sierra Madre.

Accès des voyageurs

The house, private patio space and adjacent yards are all yours to unwind in while here. You also have access to Ethernet or wireless internet in the house, and in an adjacent building there is a washing machine that you are free to use. Laundry is line dried. Should you feel inclined, there is the “cannibal hot tub” which is a huge clay pot that you can build a fire under and then get in for a good soak. …Don’t forget the onions and salt.

Échanges avec les voyageurs

When we are here we live in a house next door, close enough to be of assistance if needed, but far enough away to give you plenty of privacy. We spend much of the year traveling and when we aren’t here the grounds keeper will receive you, show you the house and offer any assistance she can. Our friendly dogs and cats will also likely come to greet you (well, at least the dogs) as you come and go.

Le quartier

Carrizo House is surrounded by interesting places to visit! The town of Etla with its old stone food market about a mile away. You can get fresh produce her daily as well as all sorts of delicious prepared local foods. Go on Wednesday and the whole center of town has turned into a bustling market. A bit closer is the unexcavated archeological site, ancient church and pilgrimage destination (5th Friday of Lent) called Las Peñitas. The movie Nacho Libre with Jack Black was filmed here. El Mogote, the oldest Zapotec ceremonial center in Oaxaca is a stone’s throw away. The surrounding villages are famous for their quesillo (Oaxacan string cheese) and queso fresco (farmers cheese) and you can get handmade tortillas daily in the villages. Out the front door are quiet country roads, lovely for walking or bike riding. Farmers with horse drawn carts come to the nearby fields each morning to cut alfalfa or sorghum for their dairy cattle.
Twenty minutes up the hill is CASA, the beautiful San Agustin Arts Center that hosts arts workshops, exhibitions, movies and events year round. There are also public swimming pools nearby and even yoga classes!
Should this green corner of Oaxaca not be enough for you, the hum and bustle of Oaxaca city is a mere 35 minutes away, and of course the state of Oaxaca, endless in its wonders!

Having a car makes things easy here, but one of the wonders of Mexico is he abundant, cheap and frequent public transportation. The house is about a 10 minute walk on a peaceful road to the corner where you can get public transportation. If you aren’t up for the walk, Tuk tuks (AKA moto taxis) can be called to pick you up at the house and take you to the market, the ruins or the corner where you catch the bus. Should you need it we can also help arrange an airport/bus station/city center pick up or drop off for you.

A very special place with lots of character. You are certainly at one with nature here. The design of the house and interior is exceptional. Marina and Eric both charming and kind. Very recommendable spot from which to see Oaxaca and surrounding wonders.

I'm from the Western US but have lived in Oaxaca since 1992. I run Traditions Mexico, a cultural tourism company, and am also an author and photographer, my subject matter being the people and life ways of traditional Mexico. I know out back Oaxaca as well as any body and can give you all sorts of pointers.

I love traveling off the beaten path, eating in small villages, living simple and doing work that makes a difference in people's lives.
