Description

Room in a 1930s, quiet house with parking, close to city centre. Netflix, DVD player, desk. Some shelving/hanging space. Exercise bike. Use of modern living room, bathroom/toilet and second toilet, kitchen and garden.

Short, Medium ((7+ days) and Long Stay (28+ days) welcome!

Medium and long stays benefit from reduced rates. :-) Stays of more than a week qualify for a 20% reduction (£224) and longer term stays (28days or more) get a 33% discount.

Friendly, light, comfortable three bedroom, 1930s semi-detached house North of the river Cam, about a 20-25 minute walk from King’s College, the market square and lots of restaurants and coffee shops (bang on central Cambridge). There are front and back gardens which you are welcome to use, and parking space for your car (off road, but not on a private driveway).

Your room is a double size (3.5mx4.5m approx), single bedroom overlooking the back (double aspect). It has hanging and shelving space for your clothes and belongings, and a cupboard converted to a little ‘office’ with a shelf at desk hight for your computer / laptop, and space for a printer, files, etc. There is free high speed (60MB) wifi broadband on two bands – 2G and 5G). A 'smart' TV and DVD player are available for your use (Netflix subscription included - headphones provided for if you're a late night viewer!). You're welcome to borrow DVD's and books from my collection. There are a hair dryer and a make-up/shaving mirror in the room, and you will have access to an ironing board and iron on the landing, should you need it. Towels and soaps are provided.

You will have use of the bathroom (shower over bath) and toilet (there is also a separate one down stairs). You are welcome to use the kitchen. Whatever your length of stay, I will provide a simple breakfast – cereals, jams/honey, etc, coffee and/or tea, hot chocolate, herbal teas or similar - let me know what you like) - so you can prepare your breakfast at a time which suits you. Anything more substantial you would buy yourself. You are also welcome to cook yourself a meal in the evenings.

You will have a kitchen cupboard and single fridge for your sole use. The lounge has a dining room table and chairs by French doors opening onto the garden where you can have your meals. You are welcome to use the lounge at other times, too. I can show you how to use the washing machine and tumble dryer if you need to do a wash – soap, conditioner and such are provided. There are a tumble dryer and a place to dry clothes that can’t be tumbled.

You will be sharing the house with one or maybe two other guests (male or female) and myself coming in from the studio to use the kitchen and bathroom. As people often come for work placements or conferences, we respect each other's need for sleep and are quiet between 10.30pm and 7am. That doesn't mean you have to be in by then, of course ... it's just to ask you to be considerate when you do come in, in case someone has a heavy day coming up. Also – if you have to be up early, just try not to wake the others! :-)

The house is in a residential area, with grocery shops close by and near bus routes into town if you don’t want to walk. For those who like cycling, bikes can be hired locally. The walk into town is nice, though, taking you across a footbridge over the Cam and either along the river, or across Jesus Green, a well-known local park. It takes around 20-30 minutes, depending on how fast you walk. There is also a local gym (about 5 minute walk away) with a pool, workout machines, classes and even basketball courts!

Cambridge is a wonderful old city (you will know this already, if you’re checking out your stay here), with opportunities for visiting the lovely old colleges (one spectacular way to see them is by chauffeur punt from the river), a range of museums (including the famous Fitzwilliam Museum), a wonderful botanic garden, a great walk to Grantchester to have tea in the orchard or a pint at the famous Green Man Pub, and much, much more.

My house is about 15 minutes by taxi from the station (or 25 minutes by bicycle), from where it is only 25 minutes by train to Stansted and 45 minutes by train to Kings Cross station, central London. Heathrow airport is about 90 minutes by train.

Please ring me if you have any questions, or want to clarify anything. I speak English and Dutch (I’m a Dutch national, but have lived in Britain since ’74). I will do anything I can to make your stay comfortable and enjoyable!

PS - Without wanting to sound too draconian, but just to have said it somewhere in the blurb ... No smoking and no drugs..! :-)

Check in times:

This is by arrangement. In principle, checking in is ok anything after 7.30am and before 21.30pm, though if you come while I'm at work, we'd need to discuss how to get you in and settled. Provided there is not someone waiting to move into the room, you're welcome to check out anytime before 20.00pm. If necessary I can keep your suitcases in the lounge until you leave. :-)

Medium and Long Term stays:

As there is proportionately less work involved when people stay longer, medium and long stays benefit from reduced rates. :-) Stays of more than a week qualify for a 20% reduction (£224) and longer term stays (28days or more) get a 33% discount.

My other room is:
https://www.airbnb.co.uk/rooms/1109691.

All communal areas (kitchen, bathroom/toilet, separate toilet, lounge, garden, under stairs cupboard). You are welcome to use the lounge to socialise with the other guest, watch TV or just to have a change of scenery to your room upstairs.

(Unless I'm actually away on holiday myself or at work, in which case I can arrange access through a key safe) I will usually welcome you in and help you settle. The rest of the time when not at work or out, I'm around (if I'm not in the house and you need me, check the studio), and I can usually be contactable on the mobile to answer questions or help sort out any issues. I'm always happy for a chat in the kitchen, or over a quick cuppa. I'm usually pretty bushed after work, though, and running around doing things on the weekends, so if you are looking to be part of a family-type set-up, though, eating together, etc. This is perhaps not the place for you. :-)

My street (Darwin Drive) is one of houses built in the 1930s. Some are terraced and some (Iike mine) semi-detached. Many are privately owned, but some are still council owned, tenanted properties. There are a little row of shops and a community centre at the end of my road, where it joins Akeman Street. There is a nice, multi-cultural feel in my street. People are friendly, but tend to keep themselves to themselves.

There are busses within easy walking distance (a couple of minutes' walk)going into the town centre (City 1 and City 8 - both go to the station and City 8 goes through to Addenbrookes Hospital). There are also busses going out into the surrounding villages . The best way to get about Cambridge I think is by bicycle, though - you can hire bikes in the town centre. There is space to lock your bike up by the side of the house.

Règlement intérieur
Non fumeur
Ne convient pas aux animaux
Pas de fête ni de soirée
Peut ne pas convenir aux enfants (0-12 ans)

While you stay there will be one or two other Airbnb guests who may be male or female. I have found that a lot of people come to do work placements or attend conferences, which means they need to be able to be sure of a good night's sleep, and may have to get up early. I ask everyone to keep noise down between 23.00pm and 7.00am. That doesn't mean you've got to be in by then - you'll have your own key and can come and go as you please (though if you're a real party animal wanting to come home in the early hours on a regular basis, this is probably not the place for you!). It's just a request to be mindful of other people who may be sleeping, and to be quiet - close doors quietly, etc. There is a 20 inch TV in your room, and headphones are provided for your use if you want to watch later into the night. :-)

Also - if you want to use the washing machine or tumble dryer between those hours, maybe just check with me or the other guests if they're ok with it.

Again – no smoking and no drugs please! :-)

I have been staying at Jeannet's house for more than two months and it was just the perfect place to live in: the house is full of light, cheerful and warm, with a delightful garden. Jeannet is always welcoming and helpful, and every detail in the house is designed to make you feel at home and comfortable. The room is very cosy and beautifully decorated with plenty of storing space for clothes etc., and a great view on the gardens. I found it was really great for a long stay as the room and house offer all the facilities and comfort you would have at home. The neighborhood is very quiet (perfect for work) and yet conveniently located at short walking distance from the city center and the University. I can only highly recommend - and thank Jeannet for this wonderful stay!

Perfect! The house is near supermarkets (ALDI and Iceland, which have much food, fruit and a drink). Walk to the west side of Cambridge University or the city center just need around 15 mins. From the train station to the house can take Citi 1 line than walks less than 5 mins to get the house. The Double room - Rear of building is a really nice and cozy room and the kitchen, bathroom quite clean, also has a washing machine. Really glad and enjoyed my stay here, and Jeanette is a great host (perfect), very kind, lovely, nice, open-minded person. Really appreciate she drove me to the train station when I left. If I have the opportunity to been here next year I must bring some gifts from Taiwan.

I hope you'll be able to come back - you'll have to now, to see Camden Market! You'd be very welcome to stay again, of course. In the mean time, with my very best wishes. :-)

Just... perfect. The house is a little north of the town centre; it is situated in a quiet residential area and yet close to two supermarkets (Aldi and Coop, two minutes' walk) and some other shops. To reach the city centre and the University buildings in West Cambridge it is definitely better to rent or buy a bike. However, the house is midway between two bus stops (citi8 and citi1 lines) that are convenient to reach the city centre and the railway station. The house itself is cosy and warm, with plenty of space inside and a nice garden on the rear. The kitchen is large and equipped with practically everything you might need; there is a private fridge for each room, which is very convenient. The rear bedroom is spacious and well furnished, exactly as it looks in the pictures on the website. I really enjoyed my stay there, also thanks to the other guests with whom I had great time. As far as Jeannet is concerned, what can I say? A lovely, nice, open-minded, extraordinarily kind person. She came to pick me up at the station when I arrived and managed to take me to the station again when I left, which was well beyond her duties as a host. Our chats in the evening, after a day of hard work, were really pleasant and relaxing. I am looking forward to coming back next year.

This is an absolutely lovely house to stay in. Jeannet was so welcoming and had put so much thought into making the house nice for her guests. It's a clean, bright room with a comfortable bed and lovely view. The area is quiet and convenient for getting into the centre. Particularly appreciated was having my own fridge and some foods like bread and milk to get me going. A huge thank you Jeannet for having me to stay

I am a Dutch national who has lived in the UK since '74. Lived in the States for 1.5 years as a child, and stayed in Berkeley for a year in the late 90's. I've done a fair bit of travelling, mostly on my own. Favourite places: Bali, San Francisco, Barcelona, Paris, Kerala (India). Also been to Mapia in Brazil, but that was pretty challening! :-)

I am a social worker with adult clients - currently working to ensure human rights for people who lack the mental capacity to make accommodation decisions for themselves.

I'm a quiet kind of person. While at home (and especially if I'm working the next day) I go to bed between 10 and 11pm. While on holiday it's likely to be the same, or maybe a little later, and I'm likely to get up fairly early (say 7.30-8am) to get a lot of exploration time in. In addition to walking round and visiting places, I love reading books in coffee shops. I probably won't do a lot of cooking while I'm staying somewhere. I don't really do at home, and it's more interesting to eat out when I'm somewhere new. Thai is a favourite.

I discovered this site (heard about it on the radio) almost a year ago, and I have loved having so many people to stay, often for quite extended periods. Interesting to hear their stories and share a bit of their adventure of coming to Cambridge. I have also stayed with one person as a guest, which has been terrific! :-)
