Rich with stories of days gone by, its bucolic setting preserves its old-world charm. Your private bedroom & bath have views of the lake and includes access to all of the main living and dining areas, and kitchen. The lake is suitable for swimming in the summer, fishing in Fall or Spring and bird-watching in the winter months.

This is a wonderful place to get away and relax, enjoying a true Southern-style experience. Whether you come during the summer for swimming and fun on the lake, or the off-season to enjoy the natural beauty of this special place, it is truly unique.

Guests will have full access to the downstairs for TV viewing, relaxing in the Library Bar, or enjoying a fire in the hearth of the family room. The main floor features formal living and dining room, beautiful screened in porch, and informal sun room. Kitchen is shared by owner and is available to guests for simple meal preparation. Full service dinners may be pre-arranged for an additional fee.

Your hostess is available for service of full breakfast, lunch and dinner options pre-arranged at an addition fee, and tips about areas of interest for touring of this rich delta region. Aside from that, it is the supreme wish of your hostess that you and your guests feel quite at home in Snowden House, a spaciously comfortable and gracious home. With that in mind, your hostess respects your privacy and remains in her own private quarters whenever at home.

Snowden House Rules

•Smoking is not permitted inside the house, but is permitted on lawn, porches, pier and screened-in porch, where receptacles are provided
•No pets are allowed on the property at any time
•When coming if from the lake in wet bathing suits, please enter through Ladies’ and Men’s dressing rooms on ground floor to change into dry clothes before entering the main part of the house
•There are ‘beach towels’ provided in dressing rooms; please use these for outdoors and refrain from using bath towels outside
•Most windows in the house are operational and screened. If you like to have the windows open, refrain to keep them open after dark with lights on in the room, as this attracts the bugs, some of which are small enough to come through the screen. You are welcome to open the windows at night after you have turned off your lights.
•There is a stereo in the living room with a selection of DVDs and tapes for your enjoyment
•The Snowden House functions on a septic system which requires that no other products, i.e. feminine hygiene, diapers and the like, be deposited into the toilets other than human waste and modest amounts of toilet tissue. There are receptacles for deposit of such items in each bathroom. Should this rule be broken, guests will be charged an additional fee of $750.00 for cleaning out the system.
•The use of fireworks and firearms is strictly forbidden on the property of The Snowden House, in accordance with the requirements of the commercial liability insurance and homeowner’s insurance attached to this property. Evidence of the use of such devises or any other criminal activity will incur strict fines.
•As your host and the owner, I live in private quarters on the third floor and am available for any questions about the area or concerns about the house. Otherwise, the house is yours to enjoy as your home during your stay. With advanced notification and request, I am also available to prepare breakfast or dinner for an additional fee during your stay.
•The kitchen is available to you for the preparation of simple meals and will be shared with me. Please refrain from placing any objects made of wood or with wooden handles in the dishwasher as well as no cast iron items. Also, please refrain from using any harsh cleaning products on the marble and soap stone countertops. Feel free to ask for my assistance in any questions you have regarding the kitchen.

Martha

This is my family home, built for my grandparents when they were newlyweds in 1919 by my Great Grandfather, R. Brinkley Snowden of Memphis, Tennessee. I was born at Horseshoe Lake, but grew up in San Francisco. Each summer, my sisters and I would visit my grandparents at the lake for several weeks. Our family has a rich history in this region and, in addition to having restored the home, I take an active interest in its history which I am happy to share with my guests. I also have a passionate interest in sustainable living and have made significant improvements to the home so that, though it is an elegant mansion in the old-world style, I have updated it to make a smaller carbon footprint. The most ecological and frugal improvement I made is to convert the heating and air system to be powered by geothermal energy, using the temperature of the lake water to heat the home in the winter and cool it in the summer. I have also installed floor heating in two of the three bathrooms.
