Domme is an old bastide town founded in the 13th century. The town is perched on a hill overlooking the stunning Dordogne river, one of the most spectacular views in the area. In the centre is the town hall surrounded by shops and restaurants. You can also visit the caves of Domme with its stalactites and remains of bison and mammoths.
Domme is an ideal base for exploring the Perigord Noir region. It is close to Sarlat (capital of the Perigord Noir), Les Eyzies (famous for its many prehistoric sites) as well as the wonderful chateaux at Beynac, Castelnaud and Milandes.
The region is renowned for its local produce. Most of the local villages and towns host weekly markets where you can explore and taste the many specialties of the area such as strawberries, foie gras, truffles, walnuts and cepes mushrooms. Domme's market is on Thursday, the nearby town of Cenac holds one on Tuesdays and there are the famous Sarlat markets on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
For more energetic pursuits, the Dordogne river is perfect for canoing and swimming. There are lots of sandy beaches dotted along the river as well as many companies hiring canoes. A cycle track follows the old railway line from Sarlat to Cazoules and there are many walking trails along the river and through the local walnut and chestnut groves.
A car is recommended for travelling around the region. Street parking is available nearby. The nearest railway station is at Sarlat, 13km away but is also accessible from Gourdon. The nearest airports are Brive and Bergerac, each about 70 km away.
